Trades and Free Agency - 2022/2023 Trade Deadline Edition

There's some good arguments for and against getting Kane, but, at the end of the day, his stats have been elite since 2018. This is his one bad year since then and many have talked about potential reasons for this. A reminder of his greatness (2018-2022):

2018-19
81 GP - 110 Points

2019-20
70 GP - 84 Points

2020-21
56 GP - 66 Points

2021-22
78 GP - 92 Points

Never forget

One bad year in a team with their foward group looking like boston foward but withdrawing all their top 9 player except marchand and coyle

If Murray comes back, we actually have the capacity to run a 23 man roster, ...with 22 man roster have $1 mil in cap. Hathaway 50% retained. I mean, that's pretty solid if Wilson is healthy.

Washington will not trade wilson...
I don’t even… wha…. Huh?
Just to show how trash this team is trash... outside of kane and toews,no player in hawks who be able to find a spot in boston top 9 and people just telling how much kane game drop...

The reality kane game didn't drop, he just playing without any top 6 player

The third line still has no history of being a productive playoff group. It’s a dice roll whether we get much of anything out of them. Also Knies on 4th is a no go for me, that line is going to be leaned on for shutdown minutes

Ok, it wasn't NHL, but you can hardly hold it against a guy, who has never played in the NHL playoffs... clearly he comes to play when it matters.

I get the Engvall and Jarnkrok history.. but Jarnkrok most certainly isn't going anywhere, and he's on pace for his most productive year... though yes.. part of that is playing on the second line. Look, from an expected goals %, the combo of Jarnkrok Holmberg and Engvall has been VERY solid. They just haven't had enough minutes together for that to play out. Knies could always sub in there as well, though he's equally untested.

I get the shutdown, but just put Knies on the roster anywhere, to show the cap could fit. I have no idea if he's NHL ready, or can contribute. Hopefully we get a chance to test that out.

It will be impossible to address every issue this team has. It doesn't matter whether that is adding Kane, Meier..... Holmberg while unproven, is more productive this year than RoR, Toews and other options for the 3C... only Henrique really might be an upgrade. If you really want to go blockbusters, and move Engvall and more picks and prospects, go for Henrique as your 3C... 50% retained.. and it actually fits too, with Engvall gone... 22 man roster, with Murray back and Woll sent down. With Murray on IR, but not LTIR, we'd have to run a 21 man roster.

I’ll be honest, I’m not very interested in expected goals at this point. We need actual production and I don’t think Engvall, for example, translates at all to playoff style. Didn’t Mikheyev - Kampf - engvall have a great expected goals last year? Mikheyev and engvall were largely useless.

I understand we cannot plug every perceived hole, but I think we need a legit scoring threat in the bottom 6 or we won’t go as far as we’d all like to.

You absolutely need some balance. They were invisible last year. Kerfoot, Kampf, ZAR, Engvall, these guys are likely to disappear IMO. I don’t think they are bad players at all but they can’t be the showpieces in the bottom 6. I think Holmberg has the potential to generate some offense but we need more down there.

Any line with Kampf... can't score. He just kills offense. Mikheyev has often been useless at scoring.

In actual goals, Jarnkrok-Holmberg-Engvall are 2.95 goals/60 That's scoring at a better rate than Bunting-Matthews-Marner at 2.78 goals/60... The expected suggests J-H-E should be even better, but the actual is pretty solid too.

This lineup does give us options though. Move Nylander down, move Knies up, perhaps McCann...

Sures, it's loaded up top, which pretty much every other addition does too.. but that top six should be pretty lethal if Wilson is added.

Jarkrok - Tavares - Marner has worked very well, by any measure. As has Bunting - Matthews - Nylander...
You could default back to that, and Engvall - Holmberg - Wilson and add scoring to that line... or maybe Knies is ready to go, and it's Knies - Holmberg - Wilson... I mean, that's a pretty heavy line, and both Knies and Wilson can put the puck in the net. Even Engvall - Holmberg - Wilson is big.. though Engvall isn't heavy, it would cause teams cycle issues.

Don't get too hung up on lines.. this gives us flexibility, there are a lot of combos that have worked out, and it gives us the size and grit we lack...

My preference is, unfortunately, quite limited to Timo Meier. If we can't land the big fish then i don't know what I'd do - probably some combination of bottom-6 adds at much lower prices for which many have been discussed here.

Henrique and Comtois would be a pretty intriguing package IMO.
I think Chychrun moves the needle big time, potential Norris trophy winner with us in the future if we got him, but I know that is a minority opinion.
But you are right, Timo is amazing.
ROR if cheap, but no premium package, he could be broken like Foligno

I’m curious to see where he ends up. I’d be ok with the Leafs taking the Nick Paul approach and stretching it out over 8 years.
Sure but Paul got 3.1 and his production is far less than Bunting. I think we would be lucky to get less than 4.5 even on 8 years.

The problem is not any line with kampf cant score, its they want so much kampf in every defensive matchup than everyone playing with will play a lot of defensive situation, so they will not score as much. You giving matthews and jt line as much possible most of offensive situation

Paul's production in his small stint with TBL during last year's regular season is near identical to Bunting this season. Also Paul plays C. It truly depends how much Dubas' or his replacement pushes Bunting and uses his line mates against him.

Engvall-Holmberg-Jarnkrok is fun - I like it.

I'd be thrilled with a number around the midpoint of those figures (3.8). My expectation wouldn't be for anything lower than that, and I'm estimating the AAV to actually end up in the neighbourhood of that upper range (4.5). I'd probably be hesitant to re-sign him for anything beyond 4M.

The Leafs have two options really for the bottom 6:

Continue to roll more of a sheltered line as they have and heavily use Kampf’s line as a shutdown

Or

Add more physicality and size in the bottom 6 for tougher depth to play against

If it’s the former you might as well look at a guy like Kane that could give that secondary scoring a big punch, and provides more versatility for adjustments in the top 6 as well.

Random thought, since it’s been shown we’d be able to fit Meier with a contract extension at 8.5 million per and others would be interested in Kane… What about Larkin? Probably looking at our 1st, Niemela +.

Bunting - Matthews - Nylander
Robertson - Larkin - Marner
Knies - Tavares - ________
Anderson - Holmberg - Jarnkrok

Connor Brown could be a potential name to slot in on the third line with Knies and Tavares on the cheaper side given his season ending injury early on this year.

That’s a deep ass forward group. This would also be next year obviously lol

By win %, Detroit is currently in a wild card spot. They also have momentum, best 10 game record of anyone fighting for the wild card. At this point, it's doubtful that they are sellers.

If he reaches UFA, he's someone you could take a look at.

Wilson isn't being moved and I dont think Washington sells with OV there.

The team to watch for me is the Nashville Predators. Nino Niddereiter and Tanner Jeannot should be targets

That's the thing...you mention Nino and Tanner.. there are so many players who theoretically could be available... It "should" be a good buyers market. Should compile a list of players named.

That very well be true. Good point. I'd still ask. Hathaway is likely available though, as a UFA.
I think they'll try to keep abd resign Hatheway. Eller's likely in his last year as a Cap though (Caps could use his cap to give Hatheway a bit of a raise).

Not a sexy name but Eller could be a good add for the bottom 6. Kills penalties, has some jam, some offense and lots of playoff experience where he's had some good runs.

On the Capitals, any chance Connor Brown is back for the playoffs? Original injury timeline was 6 to 8 months announced on November 1st - So optimistically May 1st.

He'd be a way better LTIR add then Nyquist. I have no idea how his recovery is progressing though.

I don’t really watch Nashville, just want to see how’s Ekholm and McDonagh looking these days?

Predators may be sellers. What are some thoughts on Yakov Trenin? For me, he's a good 3rd liner and has attributes that we need.

-great forechecker
-LW but can play C
-very physical with size
-provides some offense (17 goals last year)
-fights now and then (fought Chara)
-1.7 million for the next 2 years
