Trades and Free Agency - 2022/2023 Trade Deadline Edition

I really don’t think we need to blow our brains out going for the biggest and baddest piece out there. A few smart, targeted adds could be just as effective. We already have the top end talent. This all said, I’m not against adding more, those can just be complicated adds

That's fair. Matthews and Marner in particular need to be better in the playoffs and we live and die with their performances.

I just imagine Cooper stacking up against PP1 when Gio feeds Kane on PP2 for a yuge goal to raise that 18.2% PP percentage..

I love Laughton, we all love Laughton, everybody loves Laughton, I bet Philadelphia loves Laughton as well. 3 more years of term, they seem to think they're not far off for some reason. Other than the fact they have the worse GM in the league (just my opinion), why would Philadelphia move him?

Just seems extremely unlikely to me.

The source for this Soucy and Laughton rumour is Friedman speculating about those two players fitting what Toronto might be looking for and in whom the Leafs had rumoured interest in the past. He was not reporting actual interest and expressed doubts about their availability.

In other words,Friedman just guessing like the rest of us.(as usual)

There's some good arguments for and against getting Kane, but, at the end of the day, his stats have been elite since 2018. This is his one bad year since then and many have talked about potential reasons for this. A reminder of his greatness (2018-2022):

2018-19
81 GP - 110 Points

2019-20
70 GP - 84 Points

2020-21
56 GP - 66 Points

2021-22
78 GP - 92 Points

Never forget

Engvall was horseshit last playoffs, I expect the same this year. He’s fine with open ice in the neutral zone, which he won’t see come May. Hope I’m wrong but I expect absolutely nothing from him as the intensity picks up. He doesn’t have another gear, and I’m hard pressed to see him as part of a four round cup run. Maybe fourth line, but I’d trade him in a heartbeat.
he had 3 points and was a +/- of zero ...so, what do you expect from a 3rd/4th liner?
TB didnt score while he was on the ice, and thats the key thing you need from the bottom 6. ...kill time, and not be a negative.

If you want a bit more grit in the bottom six, a guy who is very physical, good size, and very good defensively, what about Garnet Hathaway? UFA this year, $1.5 mil contract Washington could end up being sellers, 5th in the division, and Ovechkin out for the foreseeable future.

To me ROR is pretty damn ideal.

He slots in at 3C and then you can almost have one of Matthews, JT or ROR on the ice almost an entire game and when it isn't them it's Kampf who doesn't give up much at all.

As for the top 6 LW? ROR can play there when it's in need as well. Down a goal? Toss him up there with JT/Willie.

Up a goal? Put him with Matts and Marner and give up nothing at crucial moments.

He PKs, he can play on the PP.

He'd bring an offensive punch to the bottom 6, you'd see the bottom 6 wingers score more with him down there.

What would be the cost to add in Acciari? 2 birds one stone.
ROR and Acciari would give this team 5 very useful centres and plenty of options on the PK and for defensive zone faceoffs. Matthews and Tavares would theoretically never have to take a defensive zone draw.

ROR just has a bit of the "it factor" in crunch time. You can argue this team has all these holes, but when you lose every series in the deciding game and even have a few series where you had multiple attempts to close it out, the team's biggest hurdle I find is themselves. I understand the Washington series and the first Boston series (2018), but ever since then, this team could have/should have won all those first round series otherwise.

I picture ROR being like Spezza in those tough moments, but he's way better than Spezza and can make a bigger difference. This shouldn't be such a hurdle, but alas here we are. I think ROR would go a long way in leading, calming the team down and actually producing.

Friedman thinks the Caps could be sellers.

I wonder if there is any chance we could get Tom Wilson out of there. Reasonable cap hit, exactly what we need and has 1 additional year left.

Hathaway is a guy I am interested in, if not now, off-season.

Wilson would be something...Nylander could be your top 6 LW and Wilson goes to RW

88-Matthews-Wilson
Bunting-JT-Marner

Not a shabby top 6.

He's played 8 games this year... multiple injury issues. Currently out. Healthy Wilson is attractive for sure, but he hasn't been that this year. Hathaway isn't as good, but might be the less injured bet.

He isnt a rental though and it is an unrelated injury. Id take both

His current issue is a lower back injury. It's unrelated to the ACL injury that saw him out earlier this year, but he's had lower back issues before.....

But if our medical team thought Wilson would be fine for the playoffs, and next year... I'd love to add Wilson and Hathaway. That would really give our team an injection of what we need.

Agreed I don't think it makes any sense to give up on him at this point.
Just wondering how other teams would value him. I would think his value must be at his lowest right now.
i imagine he's like truffle right now. Probably enhances any trade and pushes us over the top. But alone is just not edible lol.

i nutted.

Want absolutely no part of Kane or ROR. Meier would be great if the cost to acquire doesn’t completely deplete the ability to make other moves. The guy the Leafs should be targeting is Tanner Jeannot. We’ve seen time and time again the Leafs top 2 lines prop up someone who plays that muck it out roll. I’m not comparing Jeannot to Hyman (I’d get murdered by some people around here and rightfully so) or Bunting, but last season Jeannot put up a respectable 41 pts (24 goals) while playing the exact type of game this team misses in the playoffs. You would have to imagine playing on one of the Matthews/JT lines theres some sort of resurgence in his lacklustre play this season.

In other words,Friedman just guessing like the rest of us.(as usual)
Yes. Although, to be fair, he was asked if he saw any off-the-radar players that the Leafs might have interest in.

One of my big takeaways from that podcast was Friedman talking about how good Dubas has become at disguising who is really interested in.

If Murray comes back, we actually have the capacity to run a 23 man roster, ...with 22 man roster have $1 mil in cap. Hathaway 50% retained. I mean, that's pretty solid if Wilson is healthy.

Id be willing to go all in getting those 2 from the Caps if we were confident in Wilson’s health and most importantly, if they would move him.

If Wilson is healthy and we were to get him, oh boy.

Imagine afterwards we got Jeannot as well…

Bring on the Bruins baby!!!

Hathaway would be such a perfect fit on this team. I proposed a Kerfoot for Hathaway swap on the main boards in the summer and it appears he’s beloved in Washington. I wouldn’t be surprised if he stays in WSH and gets a raise this off season.
