Trades and Free Agency - 2022/2023 Trade Deadline Edition

Engvall was horseshit last playoffs, I expect the same this year. He’s fine with open ice in the neutral zone, which he won’t see come May. Hope I’m wrong but I expect absolutely nothing from him as the intensity picks up. He doesn’t have another gear, and I’m hard pressed to see him as part of a four round cup run. Maybe fourth line, but I’d trade him in a heartbeat.

It's incredibly confusing to me. That a guy will apparently cost himself hundreds of thousands of dollars and purposely harm his own development just to stick it to the Leafs for "reasons".

The college guys who hit free agency are always slower developers - which is not the case for Knies who would be expected to make.thr NHL right away in some capacity.

This stuff is just misguided worry for the sake of worrying about something
Exactly how I saw it originally.

But having had a chance to reread and reflect a bit, I owe the other poster an apology.

I think he is actually saying the opposite of what I said. Does Knies have less value to other teams because they know he wants to play on the Leafs, and play with his idol AM.....and therefore he would be much more likely to not sign and go UFA if he was traded to a team he had no interest in playing for? (Essentially lowering his trade value?)

Interesting concept.....and I think that poster may have been onto something.

You think something that big would happen without a single legitimate source reporting?
Got a real point there sire. Jus thouught out to tell it here hard. Also the media thang... Chicago denier kane by talking to to the Toronto media. Wich is weird

I'd be happy with any of Meier, Bertuzzi, Barbashev, or Domi as additions on the wing in that order.
I'm bout that too milord.

The same thing applies though. He'd be willingly passing on a development opportunity (ultimately harming his long term career prospects) and a large amount of cash.

It's a fair enough question to ask though. But Knies isn't really comparable in terms of his situation to most guys who hit free agency out of college

I don't really care about his track record, I want to know what he's capable of now and motivation doesn't makes your body do the things it used to be able to do when you were younger without the injuries

He would have to be unbelievably cheap before I'd trade for him, that cap hit combined with current performance are gigantic red flags

If it was for like a 2nd or mid range prospect Id be just fine with it.

I don't think he's going to get much more than that. Question is though is if the Leafs can potentially get someone better - which could be the case given there seems to be a lot of potential options still

Could not agree more

I’m not saying it’s an equal thing, just similar.. former elite player on a bad team with a bad year.

Hall was younger but Kane has a better track record.

What it really comes down to is if Kane’s age and injury have finally slowed him down, or if it’s a case of motive and that a trade would reinvigorate him for a stretch run.

Kane doesn't need to the superstar with us. Just provide depth and secondary threat

He can still shoot the puck and still a threat on PP

Our 2nd PP needs that shooter

Again comes down to what we are willing to part with. I'm ok with a 1st

Laughton is such a hard player to read for me. He's a good enough 3rd line player who's production is probably a bit high based on what his role would be here, but he's also gone from a promising youngish defensive 3C with a scoring touch to a 1C playing way out of his depth since Philly became a bad team. His underlyings have been real meh the last 2-3 years.

The more I look at him, the more he reminds me of a Kerfoot-like impact with a bigger body. I'd like it depending on price.
Honestly speaking, Kerfoot with a bigger body, is the prototypical 3rd liner. Esspecially if he uses his size. I'm not sure if Laughton does that or not, can't say I've watched enough of him to have an opinion.

Trouble is, in the playoffs you lean on your first PP anyways, so it diminishes his impact.

Seems like people were joking and that “insider” couldn’t decipher that.
I think this entire Kane to Leafs picked up after Bissonette has been hyping up Kane playing on Matthews wing I believe. He was literally just being a Leaf fan and got excited about the thought of Kane and Matthews playing together and now all these rumours are coming out.

It really doesn't. He can still play 5 on 5
Just not the player he used to be

He needs the puck. There are no natural passer in Chicago anymore

Part of the issue is who would he be playing with in the bottom 6 on the Leafs? Definitely not with Kampf, doesn't seem likely with Holmberg. Kerfoot? Bleh.

That might be part of the issue.

I like the idea of trying Kane and Matthews together and giving Willy his own line since he's great at manufacturing his own offense. Willy-Kerfoot worked well together last playoffs as well.

That's creative. Willy's a better centre than he's been given credit for and usually when he does play centre it's in a top 6 role, not when he can be used in a 3rd line role.

That seems more like a plan B move though .. I can't imagine they would give Nylander less minutes on the third line with the season he's having with Matthews.

Just saw this quote from him .. and it lends more credibility to the idea that Kane has just checked out of Chicago and is coasting.... if the price is right I'm getting more interested in bringing him in.

As others have said, he could be the X factor in a big game. The Leafs have enough elite talent to get them to that moment. Kane doesn't have to be THE guy. Which is intriguing.

I would liken the situation to the Pitt championship team where they had Crosby, Malkin and Kessel driving their own lines, and Phil feasted on weaker matchups. We even have Murray and similar defense to what they had during those runs, and also a skill-based team rather than a physical roster like for instance what the Blues won with.
