TSN's top 29 trade bait players left...

Sportsnet's trade day analysis team.... a team, who will likely have not much to do, and more panelists than trades.

Hahaha. Suckers.

It has become enjoyable seeing TSN and Sportsnet spend big money and allot a huge chunk of air time for what has turned out to be a dud of a day and they basically twiddle their thumbs while trying to find something relevant to talk about.

As mentioned elsewhere, I really don't see a guy like Gustafsson being happy if he's not playing regularly in the top 7.

The guy will be looking for a pay bump in free agency, and already has 38 points. He's going to want to play...

So I think he's gone if they move a guy
Yeah, to be honest if the Leafs brought him in just to sit him in the press box that's a pretty shitty thing to do IMO. He could've stayed in Washington playing regularly and continuing to rack up points and signing a nice deal this summer; he's been a bubble guy who's bounced around a lot so I'm sure he wants some stability. If the Leafs get in the way of that for him then that really blows... I get it's a business and all but it's also just nonsensical on the Leafs part, if you aren't gonna play the guy why acquire him at all?

Why do you think that?

More specifically about the last few trades. The idea that we have now 9D without any sort of set plan to shift stuff seems rather bizarre. "A D could be moved" but if one isn't moved... I don't know what the plan is.

I also don't know why they would bother flying Gustafson and giving him a number if he was just someone to send off.

Thats fair. I felt they overdid it with the Schenn trade and I mentioned that before. We'll see though.

I'm sorry, but why is it enjoyable? What's so bad about TSN/SPORTSNET? Are they inherently evil or something?

Honestly, there’s a reason the networks still do it. Enough people still tune in, that it makes more sense than airing 5 sportscentre Re-runs followed by pool

So I don’t think the networks or the analysts care that much lol

Didn't he also say he wasn't going to trade any 1st rounders this deadline and then traded 2 away?
He said he wasn't trading 1sts for rentals, but ya....

I have a feeling ROR won't be a rental either.

Shift Gustafsson to the wing in ZAR's spot, and have him QB the PP.
I had actually said (with tongue planted firmly in cheek) that Gustafsson was the new LW upgrade for the top 6. lol

Honestly, that's not a bad idea.....thinking outside the box.

Something is cooking....

CJ today:

1 - Leafs now have enough cap room to activate Murray off LTIR, and sign Matthew Knies once his college season is over.

2 - Goaltender isn't a priority. Situation is fluid & can change depending on injuries etc. but as of now, doesn't believe Leafs are looking at goaltending.

3 - Leafs are still very much still in business, but team feels like they don't have to make a move if one doesn't make sense. Pressure to make move to create Murray / Knies space no longer present.

4 - Leafs currently have 9 D available. Sense is they will move one of them - doesn't believe carrying all 9 is tenable. Speculates about both Justin Holl and Erik Gustafsson as potentially being the odd names out. Doesn't feel Gustaffson is a fit for the Leafs, and was more a contractual obligation for Sandin trade.

5 - Thinks Leafs would like to move D out in order to get another forward, but struggles to identify who that forward is. Points out that the deadline market for forwards has dried up, now that most obvious forwards have moved.

6 - Leafs had interest in Bertuzzi, before his move to Boston.

7 - Leafs had interest in Mike Eyssimont, before his move to Tampa.

8 - Leafs looking for any / all possible ways to upgrade; haven't settled on this team being the one they go into playoffs with. Are trying to still make deals.

Seems to take out any chance of us getting Schmaltz or Crouse.
Crouse/Vejmelka is still possible with Murray going out - as I said earlier: you just need to run a 22 man roster. I could see them trading Kampf to open up enough room to run a 23 man roster if they got Crouse. Kampf wouldn't really have a spot if they ran ROR as 3C. If they were to do that I could see them flipping Timmins for a forward with a similar contract situation (let's say Allison). The following roster would be cap compliant by 15k:

Bunting-Matthews-Nylander
Jarnkrok-Tavares-Marner
Crouse-ROR-Lafferty
Kerfoot-Acciari-Allison
ZAR

McCabe-Brodie
Rielly-Schenn
Gio-Lily
Gustaffson-Holl

Samsonov
Vejmelka

By $3.754 it seems... Given the ELC is $925,000 That's using Capfriendly, and bringing up Murray, putting Woll back down.

If it's Gustaffsson who is moved, that's only $800k room we'd get... I'm having a hard time seeing anyone left, who really adds anything to us in any type of price range that makes sense. There was the rumoured Vancouver Kerfoot deal, but that seems to be silent now, and you might have thought that would have happened with the Schenn deal.

Hoglander @50%?

Can find a third party to retain a portion in exchange for some futures
Doubtful there will be any 3rd party teams willing to retain for more than this season without a huge payoff, and the market for pending UFA's has pretty much dried up..

I think the Kerfoot discussions with the Canucks centered around being involved in the Schenn deal as a cap dump. I think it's unlikely he goes now - if you look at what the Canucks have been looking for with Beauvillier, Hronek, and the Kuzmenko extension, it's guys in their mid 20s that can be locked into a bit of term.

Kerfoot is turning 29, and is a pending UFA.

I'd be very surprised if the Canucks made that move, but then again, nothing about that organization screams common sense or logic right now so I'm not at all surprised that Dubas is trying to fleece them.

Crouse/Vejmelka is still possible.
In theory, yes. In practice there is no chance. They are not turning over 50% of the roster at the trade deadline, nor are they emptying the tank of most futures for that combo that is at best an incremental upgrade as Vejmelka is not a clear upgrade to what the Leafs currently have. And the cost to get a 3rd team to retain over multiple years will be ridiculous.

The hidden cost in all this is that they would not have the cap space to re-sign ROR if the Leafs make this deal.

Just let the dream die.....

I am not sold on Vejmelka either but there is no retention involved in the trade I proposed. As far as roster turnover - I can't see them moving Kampf but I don't think moving Murray/Timmins would really shake up the room. They have ~20 games each for the Leafs. You could also still re-sign ROR and Bunting with my proposed roster.
