For clarity one needs to know the entire story.

If Leafs traded 29th. and 45th. for a 15th., they traded a 1st.

So you could correctly state the Leafs traded their 1st.
I would term it more traded a late first and 2nd to move up to 15th.

I get though that people will twist whatever to make something look better or worse, depending on the GM making the move.

To me the issue was always that they needed to pay again to remove a player, not so much what they paid.

So let me get this straight you like the deal for Tampa ? Why am i not surprised lol
Like any deal, you can't tell today.
Seems like they paid a lot but if they win or the player has a long productive career for them, no one will care.

Only 1 team will win it this year, so every other team that makes a move for this year are in the same boat.

Of course if the player traded for, whether RFA or UFA, is signed then is it a rental? Even a RFA can be unsigned.

I don't know ... Leafs have really sucked in the playoffs since drafting Quinn left.

And recently, they're just warm up teams for others.

Another way to look at it is ...

Any team can lose in round #1, without propping up the present at the expense of your future draft picks.

Eventually you will be paying the piper in the future at the expense of not able being able to find success in the present. Losing in the present also impacts potential empty prospect system in the future.

With our Leafs having the longest playoff losing streak, that makes their return on investment for picks and prospects the lowest of all teams.

He would definitely improve our backend.

McCabe - Brodie

Would be a really good shutdown pairing.

I was skeptical when the rumours about him started a few weeks ago but look at it more closely and seeing McCabe a little more lately, it definitely could work out and he's not a rental.

The big red flag is the injury history.

Leafs should respond with a Luke Schenn addition so Leaf Nation can sleep a little more peaceful . :)

Tanner Jeannot vs Luke Schenn from the Nashville Predators at Vancouver Canucks game on Nov 5, 2021

I will sleep perfectly fine knowing that some cement head will not be the difference in whether the Leafs win or lose the first round.

Sam Bennett would be a savvy add.

Plenty of options on where to play him.

He's a bit of a playoff warrior and has no issue going headfirst into tough situations.

I'd like to upgrade 3C, and that's with ROR or SB
Florida fan lurking because well we won't the playoffs.

Bennett is not available per our sources.

Gudas could be and could make sense given the rumors of beefing up the third pairing against Jeannot. Thoughts?. Paul Maurice: Florida Panthers Not Selling at NHL Trade Deadline

I’ve been mentioning McCabe’s name for months on here. You can even try him on the right side with Rielly. Though McCabe has been better on the left side, he can play the right side and he’s honestly the type of defenceman you’d want to slot next to Rielly.

So traded a 1st for a 2nd?

Sort of. If we go by draft pick value charts - and here's the first one that came up when I googled that so I can't vouch for its credibility, but let's go with it: Examining the value of NHL Draft picks - Sound Of Hockey

25th has a value of 181. 38th value of 101. Difference of 80 points = 43rd overall pick.

So if we want to have an objective overall view of it, dumping Mrazek cost us the equivalent of a mid 2nd round pick. Not great, since the signing looked puzzling from day 1, but not quite as ruinous as originally stated.

I think originally the plan was just to shore up the defense, after acquiring ROR. But with the arms race build up in the East, I wouldn't be surprised if Dubas doubles down with another big splash, or two decent complimentary players now.

I like ROR playing top 6, a third line C and number 4-5 defenceman would just be excellent. Go all in F it. Its time to nut up or shut up.

The issue with Montour is he has historically been an offense first defenseman (this year included). If you grab him Brodie moves to the left and you have to play one of Liljegren/Holl/Montour with Rielly and none of those partners sound like a good idea.

Brodie Montour...only as an example.
Rielly Liljegren
Gio Holl
and associated costs

v

Rielly Brodie
Ekholm Liljegren...only as an example.
Gio Holl
and associated costs (and cap hit: 6.25x3 more years or 3.5 with 1 more year)

Just because of the chatter in the ether, I'd guess Montour might be a cheaper get, leaving more to augment the Fs. I really like our 2 top lines, but would be happier if we could go with ROR or Tavares in the 3C spot while giving either something to work with.

I feel like there are way more "trade related" scratches this year than ever before. Am I off on this?
Not at all. The All-Trade Related Scratch Team could (theoretically) ice the start of a decent lineup.

Dream scenario for me: Retained Ekholm without moving Knies. Price might be roughly our firsts in '24 and '25...or Sandin and a 1st.
Next best: Retained Mccabe+Lafferty. Price roughly a 1st plus someone like Robertson or Topi.
Backup plan: Schenn for a 3rd+ b-level prospect like Steeves/Abruzzese

Of course that applies to any trade. The point is if the Leafs made the same trade i have absolutely no doubt he would have a vastly different opinion.

Just some points to consider.

Last year we obtained a physical D man, to counter Tampa. In almost every measureable way, he was the worst D of the group. Strangely, Muzzin was pretty bad as well. Liljegren had the best results. This season, Sandin then Liljegren have had the best on ice results. Giordano is right up there as well.

Before we go out, and obtain a physical D man, focus on that we need to be a better hockey team. I am not downplaying the physical nature of the game, but the focus should be on, how do we ice the best hockey team...

Also, why are we trying to respond to Tampa getting Jeannot? Shouldn't they be focused on us getting RoR and Acciari? Do they have an answer for that?

Just, replace the guys who need replacing... not the guys who have excelled... and make sure they are better hockey players, and it's a massive bonus if they are physical too... or at least can withstand a physical game.

I wouldn't bother with the back-up plan personally but I agree with everything else for the most part.

Sorry, I will disagree on this.

Our 4th line has looked really good because of Acciari, not Kerfoot. Seeing Acciari hustling has gotten ZAR going too, as opposed to being the only one on the line. Kerfoot doesn't bring anything to that line that McMann can't, and taking $3.5 in Cap space that could be used to bring in another player.

Kerfoot has the motor and brings the effort, but is completely out of place on a checking line. He's repeatedly shown he doesn't belong in our Top 6. If he can't fit onto whatever our 3rd line is, he needs to be traded and bring whatever return we can get, rather than lose him for nothing as a UFA. This is not an "own rental" scenario that makes any sense, considering how few picks we have remaining and what more picks may be depleted should we make another trade before the Deadline.

The question needs to be asked which between Engvall or Kerfoot fits a 3rd line role best for the playoffs? I don't think either is really great to be honest, but the one of them definitely needs to be dealt by the TDL.

The fact youre playing on 4th line doesn't you need to be a hard checker... kerfoot can have a similar impact than tyler johnson had with tampa

The only reason to trade kerfoot its if dubas already find a way to upgrade leafs top 4 and need to clear space for it, the only one.

And it would not be mcmann who will replace kerfoot but holmberg
