I wouldn't even mind Parayko if the price is cheaper then the other options because of the contract. Re-sign O'Reilly for 4.5 x 5. Sign Acciari 1.4 x 2. Bunting 3.6 x 6.

I truly dont get why so many people think we can get bunting for anything in the 3s. Makes no sense. Look at his numbers and league wide comparables there is absolutely zero chance he goes for 3 and yet so many people suggest this contract.

People are betting that he won't want to leave.

At his best, he was a 2nd pairing D, that needed a defensive partner to get the best out of him. He has since regressed, and Rielly is far from a defensive partner to help someone else. That's a disaster of a pairing. I don't think he's the right guy.
I think our biggest need is a top 4 RD, even if their out of form. I'd rather a top 4 D out of form on the top pair over Holl.

At his best, he was litterally a top pair shutdown RD for a cup winning team. He was second on the Blues in ice time during their cup run and even this year is second on the Blues in ice time. I'm not as concerned with buying low as some people, sometimes players come out of form and re-gain form. If it doesn't cost us Knies or a 1st and the other alternative options do, I would consider it.

Just as an example, if Ekholm/Orlov were available (their probably not) but if they were, would likely cost Knies+ and Parayko might not. Totally speculating though but for a team that is low on futures and picks, I'd rather keep Knies and buy-low on a different d-man.

It looks like an interesting lead up to the deadline.

New Jersey, Buffalo, Detroit, Senators, Coyotes, Chicago, Oilers, Ducks amongst teams that will be making deals.

A couple of those teams have enough Cap Space to acquire anyone, and a couple have 1st. line players they will move.

Bruins will make a move.
Tampa will make a small move.
New Jersey and Buffalo could make huge, permanent player acquisitions.

I am not sure the Leafs will do anything more than acquire a lower end defender.

Didn't they play together a bit on the World Cup of Hockey? Or was it at a World Championship?

I seem to remember Parayko and Rielly played together, and played pretty well.

But - having said that - to me it seems if they were going to explore this route, they would have expanded the otiginal ROR/Acciari deal.
Agreed with this.

I read that the ROR and Acciari deal, they looked at making it bigger and including Barbashov but it didn’t happen, for whatever reason.

I think if other trades with the Blues we’re going to happen, it would have already been done….

One name not really mentioned here but I would like as a depth piece would be Nino Niederreiter. 6'2" LW who is one of the team leaders in goals and hits, and has a positove shot impact wherever he plays.

Even retained I don't think he would cost much asset wise and he would be a huge upgrade on ZAR.

Last offseason

Perron - 0.85 PPG got 4.25 m/year
Marchment - 0.87 PPG got 4.5 m/year
Verhaghe - 0.71 PPG got 4.116 m/ year

Bunting is at 0.69 PPG but is playing with some of the best superstars on the planet... so I think he's just below Verhaghe. 3.5-3.9 seems fine to me and we can give him term.

With the addition of ROR it seems unlikely the Leafs would add Kane (not that it was ever likely in the first place) but maybe they should grab Domi?

Seems like he's having a pretty good year and the antics are at a minimum?

He could either be in the top 6 or with ROR on the third line.

Tampa will end up with Bertuzzi. Detroit is still in the hunt for playoffs but they have played most of the season without Bertuzzi. They'll be in a unique position where they can keep chasing playoffs and be sellers

I was hoping we'd sign him over the summer but the cap limited what we could do, especially since we signed Jarnkrok and didn't find a way to get rid of Kerfoot.

What exactly does he bring that is worth over $4mm?
Not slighting him at all, just asking what are you getting for that money?

If he were on the 3rd. line would he be getting the same production? No.
Yes, that applies to most players ... play with elite players and you'll benefit.

He's in the top 6 because he's a great fit there, but I don't think he's Zach Hyman.

Kind of reminds me of Brendan Gallagher, and how is that $6.5mm wearing?

Out of all our players, Bunting is the one I expect would accept a discount to stay.

Scarborough kid playing for his home town Team, getting a chance to play with elite players in a top 6 role, and great friends with Matthews and Marner, on an elite team, and loving every minute of it?.

We can give him an extra year of term, and I can't see him leaving a cushy scenario like the one he has here for an extra $1m a year elsewhere.

The Devil you know is always better than the Devil you don't know......

Offer him 22 million over 6. = 3.666/year. A kid that has never made money before has to be real confident to turn down 20 mill

Tanev and Rielly excelled...

Agreed. Hell, I'd offer him 8 years for $25mil. The guy took a discount to play home, I'm sure he'd swoon over a lifetime contract here. The last 2 years might be tough but that's a looong time away and who knows what happens that far out.

Yup, that was at the world championships....but at the World Cup of Hockey, I think it was Parayko with Rielly and they looked good against elite players.

Odd how Rielly looked significantly better on D back then......

Karel Velmelka would probably be the best available goalie on the market. Whose to say he'd do better than Sammy - he'd certainly cost a lot. I think we leave the Goalies as is and see what kind of defense might push Holl down the lineup

That is the likely event. :thumbu:

I do reserve the right to complain afterwards though.

There is a part of me that wants to see a D man added because I don't believe you can ever have to much defense.

But I know the last 2 playoff series they have lost literally by 1 goal. so there is another part of me that wants to see them continue to load up the forwards.

Keefe said Tavares is eventually going back to center after the last game, Which means ROR is probably going to be the 3rd line center eventually.

Imagine if ROR had a Domi or a JVR, or a Henrique, or a Barbashev beside him You'd have 3 scoring lines, baring an absolute collapse by the Bruins you are playing Tampa

And Let's say for argument sake that did happen, even if Boston went cold and went on say a 2-8 skid in their next 10, and Toronto got hot and went 9-1 or even 10-0 and caught them.

Even if that DID happen You're still playing Boston or Tampa in round 2, you might want 3 scoring lines anyway.
