Trades and Free Agency - 2022/2023 Trade Deadline Edition

The Leafs said today Muzzin is out for the rest of the regular season and playoffs.

They will need $4 million space just to take Murray off LTIR once they sent Woll down..
Really its that tight with Muzzin on LTIR, it is just because they are carrying a bunch of extra players they don't want to pass through waivers or something

The fact that an NHL franchise needs to continually do this in order to remain cap compliant is pretty embarrassing as a professional sports league.
What's more embarrassing is that a team like Arizona trades for a dead contract in order to remain at the cap floor. Shows they aren't serious about winning at all.

EDIT: I may have misread your post.

Agree with that. I think the Team values him much more than the fans do.
They value him more than I do for sure but you have to like that they can use him now in situations where he is at his best rather than just because he is what they have on hand. He can play, but like any player when you put him in where he is overextended he suffers. If Keefe gets it right he can give both Kerf and Kampf fewer minutes but better ones.

Absolutely that is part of it.

Now they are getting to the point where Woll is the only one who can go down freely.

This Zaitsev trade makes Dubas dealing him look even better

He got out of this contract 4 years ago.

Would not be shocked in the slightest if the leafs are done at this point.

Doesn’t appear to be many quality depth Defencemen on the market they can get for a 3rd/4th round pick.

4. Toronto Maple Leafs: GM Kyle Dubas added Ryan O’Reilly and Noel Acciari without removing anyone from his roster, and made it clear he’ll see how things develop before deciding to do anything else. The Leafs tried to sign Acciari last summer, but ran out of room after inking Calle Jarnkrok. Dubas added that Matt Murray is expected to be back next week, and has indicated he won’t trade for another goalie unless the acquisition cost plus the return is appreciably better than what he’s already got in-house.

Defence? Toronto isn’t left with much draft capital, so it’s either someone you can get for a late-round pick or a current defender goes in return. Radko Gudas and Scott Mayfield are two I’ve thought about, but their teams are in the race. Luke Schenn being held out indicates he’s priced out of their range. Generally though, teams believe there is a surplus of rental defence options and are betting costs soften.

2 firsts is the asking price? I thought it was 2 firsts + a good prospect + something else

The hilarious part is the longer this goes, the longer Arizona loses a huge reason why Chychrun is valuable, his term

At this point I think he ends up a draft trade for Arizona and they about half of what they wanted. like a 2023 1st + 2024 2nd.

Their GM has been too greedy and clearly nobody is willing to bite at that asking price

I'm not saying Chychrun isn't a good player. He's very good and on a very good deal. But I think many here are projecting him to be something he isn't quite. I think throwing things out there whether it be Knies or the 2024 and 2025 1sts is just not the right move.

Could you imagine we lose in the first round, we change direction either cause the core does not want to re-sign or new management doesn't want to re-sign them, and we are set to go into a rebuild with no 1sts and the Coyotes ready to draft with our lottery picks?

I get going for it, and maybe this is the only chance, but I'd rather work to make this sustainable for a decade plus like St. Louis, Washington or Tampa. You re-sign some players, change some things up and insulate them with futures. If that doesn't work, you at least have the futures. I just don't want to be a wasteland of irrelevance until 2030 cause we went wild just to try to win in one year, a year that looks brutal with the path needed.

I get that for some, being a bottom team with no picks vs being a team that can't win rounds is the same, you know, the cup or bust types. Not me. Get talent, make it sustainable and keep taking cracks, no matter how tough it is or if it takes longer than expected.

Trading every 1st for years and every prospect in the bank just doesn't seem smart to me.

They are gonna make him sit out for the whole season? I think he’s moved before TDL

I suspect their GM is going to gamble that a team gets desperate enough to pay his price by the last minute but will get burned. Just speculation on my part though
Stranger things have definitely happened so guess we just gotta see.

If they don’t move him by TDL I think they’ll get burned for sure

I wouldn’t go that far but I agree Holl needs to be replaced.
Holl will need to be replaced when his contract expires this summer. For now though you would be hard pressed to find a RD available that could handle his quality of competition so far this year and provide better results.

Keefe has started to give Lily some of that responsibility (PK1, tougher matchups) so that Holl slides into a more suitable spot. If we can upgrade on him, sure, but I doubt those guys are available right now.

No, in another word, he doesn't suck. He's just what you get for the contract.

At this point, to replace Kerfoot with Holmberg, is a downgrade of our lineup. We aren't in a position to be downgrading the lineup... I like Holmberg... a lot, and think perhaps by next year, he could replace Kerfoot in the lineup... but he can't right now, or hasn't shown that he can. I do agree that Acciari and Kampf are better fits in the lineup, that much is for sure.

But if you are dumping Kerfoot, it is to IMPROVE the lineup... there aren't a lot of options out there that do that.. in particular with the assets we have left.
Dumping Kerfoot will be an improvement to the team since we don’t need to worry about his bonehead plays in the playoffs.
