If Savard is available, and it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, you do it.
People think our defense is set, but it isn’t. We’re one injury away from being in an awful spot.
Sure a winger would be nice, but it’s not our number one need.
We have a glut of forwards that can slot into most spots. We just need a creative coach (which has no problem juggling lines) which we have.

I think Kerfoot looks better as a wing personally, I don't think Engvall scores enough to be a regular 3rd line center as well

A shutdown 4th line center? Yeah I can see that but I think the 3rd line is to high for a guy that offensively challenged

Engvall can improve offensively. He's got tools. Even if he's just a 25-30 point producer as his peak here, if he can maintain solid defensive efficiency, that's a very capable 3rd line center for less than 1.5M. Not great but it's solid I'd say.

Whoever plays 3rd line center will not be much of a scorer for the Leafs since they will not start in the offensive zone that much. That's why Kerfoot and even Kadri after Tavares had a dip in 5 on 5 scoring here.

So who comes out?

For once, D is the least of our worries this season. Any team who loses a top 4 Dman to injury is going to be in a bad spot. I don't see the need in moving valuable assets for Savard just in case someone goes down. Brodie, Holl, Bogosian is a perfectly capable right side.

Leafs - Devils
Miles Wood @ 750k ret
for
Pierre Engvall, Filip Hallander & 2021 1st

Leafs get a big, fast, physical power forward who can play in the top 6.
Devils get a speedy, defensively responsible winger, a potential 3c and a 1st to add to their prospect pool.

Thornton - Matthews - Marner
Nylander - Tavares - Simmonds
Wood - - - Kerfoot - - - Hyman
Mikheyev - - Boyd - - - Spezza

Top 6 is Elite. Thornton has looked great with 16 & 34, and the JT line has looked its best with Simmonds. The third line would be an absolute pain in the ass to play against in a playoff series. Wood takes Jumbo's spot on the top line next season, with Robertson getting a 2nd/3rd line LW spot

Savard doesn't make sense especially since it will cost assets and cap space.. He's not going to move Brodie to the bottom pairing, nor is he going to move Holl away from Muzzin, and Bogo's been very reliable in a third pairing role.

Not to mention Liljegren is playing extremely well to start this season in the AHL, and Lehtonen and Dermott are capable lefties that can play the right side on the bottom pairing. The depth is fine.

Cap would have to go to Cbus too.. idk who you would have/want to send to Cbus to make it work?

We need C, prospects at any position and picks.

Two options to help off-set the cap would be Engvall or Kerfoot .. In terms of centre prospects, we really only have 'B' level at best. Perhaps some picks would be the best route.

Savard would have been a good add for the team last year. But don't think hes a need this season. Dermott can slide up into the top 4 if injuries happen. And there's enough other guys to cover the bottom pairing.

Would be very interested in Foligno with probably only Sandin/Robertson/Amirov being the untouchables

I'd add Liljegren to that list of untouchables for me as well.

For Foligno, something around Engvall and our 2021 1st rounder might be good

Early thoughts on Alexeyev/Okulov (KHL) and Sundqvist/Yakovenko (Liiga) as potential Euro free agents this summer? Yakovenko plays with Leaf prospects Kokkonen/Rindell, and Alexeyev found some chemistry with Korshkov this season, so management has likely seen both extensively. Numerous reports of the Leafs/Habs being tied to Okulov last season as well.

I like all four as potential signings. Alexeyev and Sundqvist are the youngest with the most untapped potential. The latter will have a lot of suitors as a former Stars draft pick, near NHL ready RHD who is tracking similarly if not better than Lehtonen at the same age.

Would we even be able to afford Foligno even at 50% retention without needing to give up Kerfoot in the deal?

I don't hate it

Maybe something like Engvall + 2021 1st + Hirvonen for Foligno + 2021 3rd?

Major overpayment for a guy like Foligno. He plays almost 18 minutes a night and only has 5 ES points in 23 games this year. For reference, Jimmy Vesey has 4 ES points in 22 games this year playing just under 12 minutes a night.

Not saying he shouldn't still be a consideration, but definitely not with Hirvonen or a 1st (never mind both) on the table. No rental this year is worth a 1st round pick on their own except maybe Hall, and that is not happening here so effectively no UFA is worth a 1st round pick. I don't think any rental is worth one of our top 8 prospects either, and Hirvonen is one of those prospects.

Engvall, Hollowell, and a 2nd for Foligno at 50%, or if they prefer a better prospect who is a center, then swap the 2nd for a 4th and put SDA in for Hollowell. Final offer for me. If Columbus can find a B prospect + 1st for Foligno, then good on them. We have a long list of alternatives from which to choose.

Have they Ever done the leaf stems in the numbers? That would have been way better than the grey

I know these are sample sizes and all, but I think we should all be content about not trading Engvall... especially not for a rental.

He's been very solid as the 3rd line center.

Whatever happens at the deadline, I think it has to be a player that fits without removing Engvall or Kerfoot. Add to them.

Brodie-bogo

We might be able to keep him as a 4LW but unless he continues at this pace up until we decide to make a trade, I am not sure that a small run is going to be enough to keep him in that 3C role long term.
