Ya a lot of fans focus on this year and I understand why, but I feel management should be focused on a window that goes to the end of Matthews' contract and then hopefully a re-sign and beyond. I'm sure they are focused on that. The more I think about it, the more ridiculous it is for Dubas to be peddling any of our top prospects for a forward. Our forward group is already among the best in the league.
If we can acquire a rental top 9 forward for a 2nd round pick that could make sense, but anyone who's watched this team closely would acknowledge that goaltending has been our most glaring weakness.
If we go into the playoffs with the status quo in goal, we're just setting ourselves up for another disappointment, regardless of what other moves are made.
So that means this year +3 to start. In that time, the team may need to recover from things such as a loss of Rielly and regressions from Tavares, Brodie and Muzzin. We would need players like Amirov, Liljegren, Robertson and Sandin to fill those holes. They likely cannot fill them to the full extent, but if they pan out they will be able to do it to a certain degree at a cheap price.
I think all the eggs in one basket approach is trouble. I honestly would only feel comfortable trading a top prospect for a great player with this year +2 on their contract. I don't think that player is available though. 1.5 years is just not enough.
