As big of a Callahan fan I am, let him walk. It's not the 1940's, there is no loyalty towards any one team anymore. If he's in it for the money, let him go to Buffalo on his 42x7 contract and be a seven year loser. Our team moves on, with or without him. There are plenty of other guys on the Rangers that give their all every night too.

so you would be fine with making the playoffs and let him walk for nothing, or trade him and get something for him, with still making the playoffs?? i say trade him now... because if you wait till the deadline, knowing the Rangers luck, he will block a shot and be out 6 weeks :sarcasm:

He isn't a rumor monger.

Yep. His connections to the NYR are as good as anyone.

The more it drags on, the more obvious this is. If there was any doubt I am sure he would have budged a little. Weekes is as good a source as any and those numbers are nuts.

Man, really did not think it would come to this. They better get good value. With all the Stewart chatter that really seems like a likely move.

Yeah I think someone floated it to Callahan's camp that teams were willing to pay, but not give up the assets. Weekes wouldn't come out with that if he didn't know for sure that's what was up.

I think the Blues are the best option. They give us an underrated forward replacement with more offensive upside (IMO) and a pick, we give them the optimal forward to replace him with while they push for a cup. They also cut a salary commitment for next year. Works for both sides.

I can speak of what I feel Callahan is worth (which imo is closer to $5 million per year) but when you hear reports/rumors he is asking for north of $6.5 million...that is just insanity. If he can get that from another team, good for him. He is not a $6.5 million player. **** loyalty. Heart and Soul player? JT Miller is waiting in Hartford and plays a similar type of game. Buh-bye Callahan. Bring in Stewart too.

I don't blame Callahan and his agent for asking for the moon. I don't blame Sather for not giving it to him. We'll trade him somewhere and move on, business as usual. Cally will get to free agency and he'll get more than 6 x 5. To quote Scott Gomez, it is what it is.

The only problem is that most teams are laying off until free agency kicks in.

$6.85M? ADIOS!
that's ridiculous. good to read that another GM seems to think so too. I'm guessing that is just his agent trying to drive up the price. $6M seemed like it was going to get it done a few weeks ago, but Cally wanted 7, not 5 years. I bet the agent is trying to get more in exchange for less years. If Buffalo is ready to pony $6M for 7 like I read in the rumor mills, then I guess that's that. Someone is willing to give him what he wants.

Out of curiousity, I wonder what an extended Callahan is worth.

“Ryan Callahan wants north of $6.5 million and close to $7 million per year. If he gets that in UFA buyer beware. He would be a great fit on 30 teams, he is a heart and soul player but not at almost $7 million. Sather is drumming up interest and wants to see the market entirely.†(Darren Dreger on TSN Drive)

Dreger adds that the Rangers wanted this resolved this week but that may not happen

Sigh. This is what I was afraid of.

I say trade him for the best offer available prior to the freeze.

Didn't Selanne sign for less than market in Colorado with Kariya because they wanted a crack at the cup
Nah, it was Kariya who really took the cut. I thought Selanne's $5.8 million was an overpayment at the time.

I meant later for Selanne, the loyalty tends to come later, the contracts are shorter and the players kids get older, further into their school systems. It's all a matter of utility.

Sather has to focus on getting the best rental value for Callahan ASAP. Bartlett and Cally may be fine just waiting until the season ends to deal with his contract but that's not in the best interest of the organization. Trade Callahan before he twists his ankle in the Olympics.

Absolutely. Can't wait to find a team that will resign him because that won't happen until FA starts.

Callahan will just let the season ride out and sign with whoever ponys up the $$$$

Ranger fans have to be realistic about a rental return here. We shouldn't settle, but were not going to get
a star player coming back

No chance of a sign and trade then? They are waiting until the summer to talk contract with any other team? Thanks alot, Cally.

I absolutely love Cally and all that he's done since he's been here, but there is just no way he deserves 6 million plus, especially more near 7 million. I know this may seem radical, and this is pure speculation, but what would a package of Cally and McIlrath return? This is only if they're able to lockdown Stralman for a reasonable number.

Anyone think that Cally is asking for the moon because he has his heart set on Buffalo and they can pay him? In essence he's forcing his way to Buffalo?

Cally wants two things.
A: The best contract he can get
B: To win a cup .

He hurts B if the team he signs for gives up assets. He hurts A by not letting it go to a full bidding war in July.

We'll see just how much depending on who he signs with. If he really goes to Buffalo, you're looking at a 3-5 year rebuilding plan. He makes them better today, but he's not the kind of player that accelerates a re-build. At least not totally on the ice. He'll be worn down by the time they're looking up.
