I would prefer not to keep Del Zotto.

He's playing for a coach that refuses to put him in his natural position. He can't play the position he's in right now effectively.

His value will only continue to plummet.

He has been playing to the left the past few games though, and I can't say that I have seen a big difference in his play.

I think Gardiner fits AV's style of play better anyway. I haven't noticed DZ switched, i've just noticed him skating around like a chicken with no head. No idea where to go, no idea what to do with the puck. Frustrating.

On the plus side, his mistakes tend to be so bad they surprise the opposing team's players enough that they can't score themselves.

He is on the 2nd PP since coming back. He is on the left side, but him and Moore switch during the play like a lot of defenders do. He is playing behind Staal and Mcdonagh. My question is what position should he be in? He should not take minutes from the above players and does not fair well in the right side. He played 15 minutes the other night. Who's minutes should he be taking cause the top 4 looks good right now.

Is it due to playing with Moore? Since being added back to the lineup, every game he has played LD. Moore on the right. Unless my eyes are lying to me, he seems the be highest on the totem pole he can be at this moment.

Falk fits his position just as well. We have Allen who could be better than both Moore and DZ. McIlrath will command a roster spot in the next year. Skjei is coming up the ranks very quickly.

You trade assets like Del Zotto for positions of need.

2c. 2w. 4 rd.

His value is dropping every day, every game.

Del Zotto has made some great outlet passes. His play has been better. Not good, but better. He sprung Zucc for a breakaway on the PP against CBJ but Zucc lost control of the puck. Sprung Zucc in Chicago on the PP which led to a goal. He is still weak in his own end.

He is playing better but with that said I move him for a RD. IF they can get Barrie or Demers straight up even

It just makes sense with McD, Staal and Moore on LD. Falk can sub in and Allen is in the minors. Also Sjkei will be in the AHL next yr

On LD we have McD, Staal, DZ, Moore, Falk, Allen, and Skjei.
On RD we have Girardi, Stralman, DZ, McIlrath

A MDZ for Gardiner trade would make sense for both teams. Barrie seems to be undersized, no? Don't know much about Demers.

Is Gardiner not a ld?

Can someone tell me what Barrie would bring other than being a righty? Hasn't COL had a no-name defense for a while now? And Barrie hasn't cracked the lineup for ~4 years since being drafted..Why is he suddenly going to do better than MDZ here? Or is it just that he's 22 and there's no other options?

he's a talented offensive Dman, He would help the PP. At 22 he can get better.

I watched the other night and he looked good, assist n the tying goal and game winner in OT. I think hes a Righty version of DZ. with Girardi and Stralman UFAs getting a good RD is important to me

Gardiner is a LH shooting defender, but he has the ability to play either side of the ice.

Having a right-shot playing RD is a nice perk, but it's hardly a requisite to play the position. There are so few RH shots on defense around the league, so what are other teams doing? I can see the argument for keeping Girardi, and I can see the argument for RH shots on defense, but Girardi really only takes advantage of his right-shot when he's playing the puck off the boards. It's not a weapon for us offensively.

Barrie is a very good puck rusher, and he has a much better shot than Del Zotto. Barrie can generate offense by skating the puck out of his own end and leading the rush. Del Zotto doesn't really have that ability.

Gardiner is a LHD that plays LD, earlier this year he was tried on the right side on the 3rd pair when Fraser was injured but he struggled mightily.
Back in College Gardiner played the right side with McDonagh for half season, that reputation seems to follow him that he can play the right side, fact i, he can't in the NHL.

For Jake Gardiner, 23, it is a much happier occasion – returning to his natural left side Friday against the New Jersey Devils with Franson, after a troubling stretch trying to play on the right side on the third pairing with Paul Ranger.

“The conversation we had with Jake Gardiner is he feels he’s foreign on the right side,†Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle said after Thursday’s practice. “The reason we made the decision to put him over there [on the right] was because of his skating ability. He was able to see the ice and it would lighten the load and make it easier for him.

“I guess we were wrong.â€

Yeah, I've read that article too. Doesn't mean I buy into it at all. Gardiner looked bad in those games, but he was also playing with Paul Ranger, who is an AHL caliber offensive defender with no ability to play in his own end.

Also, let's add a little more context, shall we?

Judging by Carlyle’s expression, he is not exactly convinced about this. But Franson, for one, is willing to testify just how difficult it is for a defenceman to play on his “wrong†side.

One of the reasons Gardiner was tried on the right side was simply practicality – there are fewer right-hand shots in hockey, so lefties naturally get asked more often to switch sides.

“He’s been playing his off-side for a while now, and he’s done a really good job with it,†Franson said of Gardiner. “That’s not easy to do. I support him in all arguments with that.â€

So, yes, he may have said that to Carlyle, but I think quite a bit of it had to do with just how much Ranger was dragging him down.

Let's remember this was the right on the 3rd pair. I have seem many put Gardiner on the right on the Rangers first pair in many proposals here.
As to that Franson quote. Franson is his regular partner, It was the right thing to say. I am not sure what else you expect him to say. He will support him as he states.

So Barrie's play style is more suited to AV's system and he's closer to putting things together as far as being an offensive d-man than MDZ looks?

I know it's been mentioned before, but I think people are sleeping on the likelihood of the Senators as a landing spot for DZ.

Their D right now is basically Karlsson and a whole lot of size. And during the Sens-Avs game the announcers repeatedly mentioned the organizations desire to get more offense out of their D. There were also several reports of the Sens having interest in DZ earlier in the year.

Plus, it's not like the Rangers PP is exactly struggling right now... With the team likely hoping Allen makes the squad next year, Stralman unlikely to price himself out of resigning in NY, and McDonagh's continued improvement on offense, I don't think the Rangers are necessarily looking to replace DZ with a similar style of player. They already have that, kind of, in John Moore.

Hopefully the Rangers can pry some of that young size out of Ottawa, getting a little more size and snarl on the backend, while letting Moore play with a more defensively responsible partner, plus building a bit of defensive depth should the team decide to move/lose Girardi or even Staal at some point in the near future.

Murray and Sather are two stubborn fools. Remember Heatley? They just don't make good trading partners.

“I can tell you there is very little trade discussion going on anywhere,” Gillis said today on TEAM 1040 radio (audio). “It’s difficult to make trades when you have the cap lowered and teams’ financial resources under the cap have been used up.

“It’s tough to find trades that you can make that are going to improve your team. It’s tough to find anything but lateral moves and changing the deck chairs.

“But we’ll see. We’re trying. We’re always trying to improve and we’ll see if we can.”

Nothing is going on.
