If we are buying Richards out, its not easy to replace him.
Looking around the league, its easy to see that offense is the way to go. Size in terms of looking at some kind of avg for a team (while a PF or two seems to be a must) and N-S hockey just is not effective. And with offense, its definitely more puck possession players that are paying of than snipers or snirkly wingers... We are short on offense as it is, and if we let BR go we must replace him and preferbly get even better offensively.
Looking around the league, there is just extremely little offense available. Riberio is a player that moved recently that maybe was someone that got away. Inside and out side the NHL, you can find some complimentary players offensively, but few with potential even to be more go-to types. In light of the play of Zucc but also like Hudler in Calgary who has been excellent for them this year and really is finding a lot of ice to operate in, I wonder if it is possible and if so what it would take to get Mikael Granlund from Minnesota?
Minnesota has really tried to establish themselves at least as a top 5-6 in the West, but is on the outside looking in again. They have a core in place, but not much outside that core. They could be open to make a deal. Granlund is listed at 5'10, but he is darn small, he is not the best skater and got defensive issues etc. But he really got bona fide exceptional offensive instincts. He is 22 y/o now and still feeling his way into the NHL, it seems like he is at a crossing in this career. But from my point of view, I just feel that it must be a matter of time before he really start to put up pts in this league. Players like him all over the league are finding space to play there game.
If we plan ahead for next season and buy out Richards, if Minny would accept a trade with MDZ and Brassard going for Granlund, we at least get potential to replace BR's offensive out put from the get go next year.
And we get an freakish amount of cap space available even if Callahan and Girardi are resigned (not that I am sure of if that will come in handy the comnig years, but still...).

CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $8,677,000 (!!!)
The above team would need the following to be able to compete:
1. Mikael Granlund finding chemistry with his two big wingers, and that line producing. Basically getting 70 pts on avg from the 3 of them.
2. Chris Kreider taking another step and becoming an established really good player in this league.
3. That Zucc keeps producing at just under a PPG pace.
4. That the PP doesn't fall apart when Richards leaves.
5. That we go back to being a top defensive team in this league. That Staal and Girardi keeps growing into AV's style.
6. We probably need to add a PMRD to the above line-up to be dangerous enough offensively. That RD doesn't have to be established, but can be up-and-coming and worked in behind Girardi.
7. That JT Miller takes another step and becomes a real good player next year. Giving us a 3rd line that is one of the better in the league.
