I could see Buffalo having interest in Del Zotto, but not at the expense of anything truly valuable to us. Pysyk, Ristolainen and Zadorov are likely all off limits, and for good reason. In terms of RHD, that pretty much leaves Myers (highly unlikely) and McBain.

Grigorenko has had some issues there. Wonder if he could be a target. Rangers were rumored to be hot for him on draft day. Buffalo will likely be picking between Reinhart and Ekblad on draft day. Defense is a strength, and Reinhart is the clear #1, IMO. Take the center and move Grigorenko for a lefty defender named Michael Del Zotto.

I don't know, Grigorenko hasn't impressed me in my viewings. For someone with two seasons of on and off NHL experience, he didn't dominate this year's WJC's like he should have. Talented, sure, but unless he's playing top 6, he's not very useful. He reminds me of Derick Brassard in the sense that he may never be consistent enough for the 2nd line but not good enough defensively to play on 3rd line. Guys like him end up back in Russia if things don't start to click by the time they're 23 or 24. I would much rather go for Armia or Girgensons if Buffalo wants to give us a forward prospect for Del Zotto.

As an aside, if you ask Dagoon, DZ is getting traded today:

@Dagoon44: So mdz is going today ? What's the return going to be ...

He's 19 and has plenty of room to grow. Buffalo rushed him and his confidence is shot. Big, highly skilled center. Just what this team needs. If he was at his top-end already, we'd never get him in a deal. I say take the risk and see if he can turn it around. I'd rather have a potential top center in the fold than settle for the crap that Ottawa offered.

He's gotten a rough deal in Buffalo for sure. It's a risky venture, there's a reason he dropped out of the top 10 after being a consensus top 5 pick. His consistency and attitude are big question marks. Though, if he's the best they can get for Del Zotto, I wouldn't be heartbroken, even though I prefer some of their other forward prospects to him.

I don't want to spend too much time thinking about something that has probably a .01% chance of happening, but I wonder what sort of deal it'd take to offer sheet him away.

At least 8.5 would be my guess. Maybe he just gets so sick of Montreal/Therrian he just wants to go.

He'd pretty much be everything this team needs on the defensive end.

I think he's the guy who could be the most available while still having a fair amount of upside. Certainly a risk involved, but I give him the benefit of the doubt for clearly not being ready for the NHL, but being too good for the Q. I think he's a guy that you hope can take off in a new environment, perhaps in the AHL for the first half of next season.

would love to see what a cally/del zotto package would bring us back ?

i would love grigorenko in this organization. hes the big bodied, highly creative centerman we lack. we dont have a shot at him if hes perfect. i take the chance with him though no doubt. hes got skills.

but i would also love joel armia too. dude can really snipe it.

Subban would be more than a dream come true, but unfortunately, MTL will have the cap available to match any offer and undoubtedly will do so. I could see Subban wanting to move on from MTL and happily signing one though.

Cally and Del Zotto to Buffalo? Probably not much more than Del Zotto alone. Doubt Callahan would sign with a rebuilding team.

I've never been crazy about Armia, but I wouldn't be heartbroken if he was dealt to us.

Where is this coming from?

The last thing Buffalo needs is a defenseman, I can't imagine they want Del Zotto.

Buffalo might want Callahan but as a rebuilding team what do they really have to offer? I can't think if a worse trade partner for the Rangers then the Sabres.

One has to wonder if Staal and Girardi's futures have a say in what happens with Del Zotto. You don't want everyone going out the door minus McDonagh and Moore in one offseason.

imo that depends on why del zotto is being traded...if he is being dealt because he is stuck behind mcdonagh and staal and he is worth more in a trade then on a 3rd pair, then absolutely you want to make sure staal isn't leaving too...

but if you are dealing him cause you don't like him and don't think he's that good than he still isn't good even staal leaves...

Honestly, with the East being such a turd-party this year, I really have a hard time seeing the Rangers doing anything major, much less blowing it up (which lets face it, trading Girardi or Callahan would be) until right up to the trade deadline.

For me, the worst possible situation would be that we continue to play roughly .500 hockey, making the playoffs as a 5-8 seed, and in the process hold onto both Girardi and Callahan, thus having to give both raises this summer or lose them for nothing. Only to get bounced yet again in the first or second round.

Plain and simple there have just been too many years of mediocre hockey played by this franchise, and if the organization decides not to make major changes, all I can see is more of the same. For those who want to resign Cally and G, where and what do we use to get better? If we resign those two, our best bet is the cap space created from buying out Richards. The problem is there's just no real first line, elite talent available down that road anytime soon.

And really, if you look at how this team has performed over the last few years, with the current core, it's hard to not see a downward trend. Everyone clings to 10-11, which admittedly was my favorite season in a looong time, but we didn't even make the Finals(not to mention that was a year without Crosby for the Pens). And as good as that Ranger team was, they were still flawed enough that they couldn't avoid going to 7 games with both the 8th and 7th seeded teams. Their inability to dominate those teams, and shorten the series, contributed majorly to them being physically worn out by the time they faced the Devils. Then the next year, the team did worse in the regular season, and in my opinion never even had a chance in the Bruins series. Outside of Nash, there was just absolutely no threat to create any kind of offense or score goals.

Now we come to the present season, and I think the team's record and performance on the ice speaks for itself. I'm having a real hard time figuring out what free agent is going to come turn around this team. Kreider and McDonagh aren't going anywhere. You don't resign Callahan and Girardi and then trade them that year or even the next. DZ isn't bringing back top line talent and as it stands the team won't be drafting high enough to grab an impact player who's going to be able to make a difference anytime soon. Sadly, other than McIlrath the team's prospect depth is probably the thinnest it's been in a long time. There are simply no elite or A grade forward prospects in the system much less anywhere near contributing meaningfully anytime soon for the big club (yes, I no longer consider Kreider a prospect). So for those who want to stand pat, where is the help going to come from? How is this team plus 1 big name free agent going to become a legit Stanley Cup threat? Isn't the whole signing big name free agents thing exactly what people bemoan the Rangers for constantly doing?

I know it's not worth much, but my vote is now officially in favor of a rebuild. The goal is to win the Cup, not consistent mediocrity. Without significant changes, there will be no significant change, and we will be left with a somewhat above average team, without a real shot at the Cup, both for now and the immediate future. It's getting old. I've loved this core and loved watching them grow, but it's time to try and move forward. I'd rather watch the Rangers win a Cup than watch Callahan's entire career be in Rangers blue. I'm a Rangers fan before I'm a Cally, G, Staal or even Henrik fan. I want a Cup, and just like 94, I'll take it whether or not it's the result of free-agency, trades, or homegrown talent.

i doubt Rangers make a major roster trade before the trade deadline. if Del Zotto is dealt before Jan 31 ends ill be shocked... people need to remember, the Rangers might surprise people with a trade for a player no one knows much about... look at the Prust trade when it first happened.. and here is another thing, Rangers will get someone that fits this system... i doubt the Rangers will trade for a player although it fits a need, the player might not fit this style or system.. speed i think will be a big factor. i bet Rangers will get quicker because, outside of Kreider and Hagelin, their is not much speed in the lineup.. Carcillo has good speed to forecheck but i need to see more of him as a Ranger..

I don't think trading Girardi or Callahan needs to be blowing it up. Just trade them for controllable roster players, not picks and prospects.
