Did anyone see the pre game show with Eddie Olczyk last night? He doesn't believe Staal will re-sign with the Rangers. Edzo isn't a rumor monger. Maybe he heard something from someone around the Rangers. Some of the support staff is still with the Rangers from when Edzo played with the Rangers. Trainers. Equipment people. Those guys know all of the dirt. Contract or no contract, the Rangers should move Staal.

I agree.

There are a few young gamble RDs that can be had, but very few. There seem to be a great infusion of LDs though.

Just seems to be a lot easier to replace Staal and MDZ on the left side with one good offensive minded LD that can be backed up by a No 3 LD in Moore or Skjei down the road, than to start to find one No 1 RD and one No 2 RD for a cup winning team.

Its a darn shame that Staal is getting hurt all the time though, you wonder what value he has. I would imagine that someone like Marc Staal ought to have a lot of value despite his problems to a team like Colorado or EDM. If you want to build a contender, but feels that you gotta pick up up one real solid D to be a corner of your team, if you look ahead 2-3 years, there will not be many if any better alternatives available. Teams that drafted the offensive stars for 3-4 years can't now start to build a blue-line with top 5 picks. 18/19 y/o's. Nobody can expect that to actually work.

Did you see Newport wants $8M-$9M for Subban? He will be two years away from group III. Bob McKenzie said PK will file for salary arbitration and get 1 year at $7M. He can file again in 2015. One year. Group III. Newport must be demanding a mint for Girardi. McKenzie said another team will give Subban $9M if the Habs won't. Same deal with Girardi. Newport doesn't give hometown discounts. Perry contract from last season. Lundqvist. Phaneuf. Scotty Morrison said Girardi is a $6M player. Someone must have given him that number. If the guy in Toronto is worth $7M,Girardi is worth $6M. Its up to the Rangers if they want to pay that over 7 years. Another team will give it to him. What does Callahan want? $7M? Minimum of $6M. Thats a lot of money for intangibles. 7 years for him too.

Yeah but...........who is going to replace their minutes so we can continue to be mediocre?:sarcasm:

7m is of course a lot for Callahan. Everyone will get a lot more than what people are expecting.

Many are like, 7x7 -- that is Zach Parise money, are you nuts??? That is first line money.

No actually, its not Zach Parise money. Not even remotely.

Zach is getting:
1y 12m
2y 12m
3y 11m
4y 9m
5y 9m
6y 9m
7y 9m
8y 9m
9y 8m
10y 6m

Then he is 37-38 y/o and can retire whenever he wants. Zach's avg salary the first 7 years is 10.14m. That would be exactly 44% mora than what Callahan would get if he signed for 7m per. The only one not using the ability to be flexible with long term deals in the entire league is Glen Sather, that was not how it was done in the 80s! I mean like, of course Subban as a UFA is getting 9m. He is a Norris candidate. 9m is a huge hometown discount. Subban is easily getting 10+m if he hits the market under a 80m cap and no other good UFAs being available for two years.

People are in for a suprise if they expect us to be able to take a step back and replace core players with 5 year 3-4 million deals...

Slats dropped the ball by not tying up Cally, Girardi, Stepan and co long term long before the new CBA.

David Clarkson is making 5m per on a 7 year deal.

The 1880s?

The 1880s?

- Don't be sarcastic son, do you know that the Mauser rifles built in 1895 is as good as any rifle built today! I agreed on a 1m deal deal Wayne Gretzky in 1984 after he has scored 92 goals. (Newport leaves the room)

;) :sarcasm:

Its going to be really hard to take a step forward in the coming years. 30 teams with cap space and probably 26 - 28 of them will be buyers.

If you deal Callahan and or Girardi you better be darn sure to get assets that count. Before you could trade for prospects just inside our outside the NHL and be winners no matter what. Either you got capspace or you got a player. Or deal-able assets for other cap dumps.

I just don't see those alternatives being open in a long time.

If a deal must be made, long before looking at Vaatanen and Kyle Palmieri, Id look at Mike Green or Eric Johnson. I would evaluate someone like Tyler Myers. Guys like that. That or true blueship prospects of course.

You can't open up a bunch of holes right now and bet on a bunch of hail (thanks trxjw! ;)) marys. Also, we are not dealing rentals. We are dealing 28/29 y/o's, then you agree on a trade that is conditional upon the acquireing team being able to resign the player.

Cally and Girardi for Mike Green and a 1st.

Cally, Girardi and MDZ for Eric Johnson (signed for 2 more years) and ROR.

Cally to his hometown with Girardi for Myers and Ennis, or Cally for Myers and Girardi for the best available center (if anyone is available).

Deals that never will happen of course, but if I am looking thats more what I would look for at least. You gotta get players back. We can't expect to strike gold on the UFA market in the coming years and you can't expect to strike gold by getting a couple of avg prospect with depth potential and a couple of late 1st rounders. With Mike Green, we fill one hole at least. Carson has bumped him of the top PP and they gotta be looking to get back as contenders in this league again. AO is getting older. I don't know why E Johnson would be moved, but in him you get a D who possibly can take a step forward but no matter what is very good top 4 and signed for 2 years at a good price.

How do you propose that we take 3 steps forward instead of 1 step forward?

Simple you sell off parts, re stock the farm with prospects and picks. You have to take a step back sometimes to take 2 steps forward. RB has shown teams who have done it, Montreal, Philly, etc. it's not a rebuild it's a re tool. What good will it be over paying our guys? It'll be the same mediocre team next year with the same problems with less cap space. Oh my bad it's going up to a billion or two

Green is a good target, Colorado aren't letting EJ go though. I'm not high on Myers.

I still say go hard for Byfuglien who is an elite defenceman that is currently undervalued due to a low on-ice Sv%. I don't think his value is going to be lower than this in a very long time.

I agree on being cautions with Staal, who hasn't posted good possession numbers since his concussion apart from this season (negative CF% rel in 11-12 and 12-13), and those (the good ones) can solely be attributed to Strålman.

Staal without Strålman (adj. for zone starts):

11-12: 43.8 CF%
12-13: 49.7 CF%
13-14: 46.6 CF%

Compared to Staal with Strålman:

11-12: 44.5 CF%
12-13: 55.5 CF%
13-14: 56.3 CF%

I'm afraid that Staal might not be the same player after his injuries, but that Strålman is covering it up.

It's scary that two of the cornerstones of our defence might be significantly overvalued, but we may have to re-sign them to bad contracts anyway due to lack of options. You don't just up and trade 50% of your top 4 (or 50% of the entire defence if MDZ is moved)

That said, if we could somehow replace Girardi, Staal, and MDZ with Byfuglien, Gardiner, and Vatanen that could be great:

McDonagh-Strålman
Gardiner-Byfuglien (Buff on the 2nd pairing for balance)
Moore-Vatanen

That would be one of - if not the best - puck moving defensive corps in the league. It could also backfire immensely, but I choose to believe!

Or go for Hainsey instead of Vatanen/Gardiner if you want a more veteran D:

McDonagh-Strålman
Hainsey-Byfuglien
Moore-Gardiner/Vatanen

But honestly, those scenarios are way up in fantasy-land.

Is probably the most untouchable player on the Sharks, or at least 2nd behind Couture.

He isn't even a defenceman anymore, but probably the best power forward in the league. He'll pace for 40 this season despite not getting prime PP opportunities.

He's great in fantasy since he can go on d even though he's a rw now

How do you propose that we take 3 steps forward instead of 1 step forward?

How do you?

There are only 3 ways to acquire players: draft, trade and free agency. We all know how well free agency has worked for us in recent years and, although we have drafted better than most, we still don't have enough impact players. So are we banking on the kids in our system? Are we banking on players we haven't even drafted yet? Are we banking on free agent acquisitions?

You tell me. Where are the players coming from to make us cup contenders if we refuse to trade guys like Girardi and Callahan?

im high on big Byfuglien. to me, hes exactly what we are lacking. would love that heavy shot on our pp and hes a guy who isnt afraid to pull the trigger. imo, he should be a guy we go after bigtime.

you add just him to this team and we are much more dangerous.

i move cally- no way we resign him, del zotto- for whatever, girardi- hell fetch a 1st and a roster player and staal-again, like girardi. those are the 4 guys in play and i look for buf, a skating dman and a power forward in return.

this team isnt going anywhere as its presently constructed, even with last nights win.

Sometimes the right moves are the most difficult ones. This team isn't closer to winning a cup with Girardi and Callahan signed to 7 year deals worth 6 million apiece with Vigneault as coach. This is coming from a guy with both Callahan and Girardi jerseys, I love both players and what they have done for us. You win in this league today with speed, skill, good drafting, and timely (not necessarily elite) goaltending.

Ok, didn't know that actually. I don't see much of the Sharks. When I see them, he seems to be a bit of a shotgun for Thornton type of player. It would be interesting to see his production, as a forward, playing away from Jumbo.

How do you?

The alternative to take three steps back and pray on four hail marys to go your way to be able to take four steps forward, is the following.

THE NO CHEATING OPTION

1. Fix the defense

We are 10th in shots against, but we are 21th in goals against 5 on 5. Last year we were tied 1st in goals against. 11/12 we were 3rd in goals against (Vancouver was 4th). 10/11 we were 5th in goals against. In 09/10 were were 7th in goals against 5 on 5. 08/09 we were 6th. And so forth.

I know, I blamed Torts for his transition game and now I am blaming AV. But I am just calling it like I see it, I thought Torts transition game was horrible and I think our man-man experiment is working horrible right now too. I really do.

Early in the season we gave up goals because we screwed up in the transition game. But that is not the case any more. We are just constantly blowing our coverge in our own zone. We rarely seem to be in good positions to block shots and pick up rebounds. we loose players in absolute no-go areas on a regular basis. We are just running around all over the place way way way too much.

I see no reason what-so-ever for why we can't be top 10 defensively. We were No 1 last season with the exact same roster. We now have a transition game, that can cost us a few more goals. But not so the jump is to go from 1 to 21, maybe 1 to 7th overall or whatever. Very few of the better teams are playing some version of man-man defense, and we seem to try to play some kind of NBA version of it that just looks absurd at times.

McD, Staal, Giradi and co has potential to form the basis of a very strong blue line and infront of Hank we should have one of the better D's in this league. We had just that under Renney and Torts, I just can't see what have changed now.

Fix it!

2. Make Nash work

You make your own bed. You just can't always go with the opt out-option. Nash might not become the franchise player we hoped for, but at least make sure to get scoring from him. He is on pace to score 28 goals and 56 pts. Last year he was a PPG player.

We are coaching him. We are training him. We are providing him with his linemates. We are deciding how he should play. I don't care if Nash is to be blamed or not. You just can't on a regular basis bring in players and not get production from them.

We can't opt out yet again.

Make Nash work!

3. Turn McD into a Norris candidate

McD's development this year has been remarkable. We have started to ask him to move the puck and be involved in the offense instead of just throwing the puck away, and he is starting to look like a top 10 D in this league. Keep developing him into a top 3 D! Ask for him to make the passes every shift. To learn to master the blueline every shift. The defense is already there. A little more strength will also come with age.

4. Develop Kreider, JT Miller & Co!

Kreider is really finding his way in NY. JT Miller might not have the consistency yet, but he is past showing flashes of belonging. He has for full periods played really good hockey in this league, and he is still only 20 y/o.

Fast made this team out of camp, while doing so he was a full year younger than Callahan was for example when Cally was one of the first cuts. O.L. will need some time to develop in HFD, but I think he is coming along. McIlrath will also need time, but he is improving for sure. Skjei got some gods for sure. We have some depth on the farm and some assets for sure.

College kids and European UFAs are often a bit hesitant to sign with the best teams since it seems unlikely that they will make it right away, we shouldn't have that problem. We should have a good shot on the next J Schultz or Zucc that becomes available.

We have a few spots open in the coming years. Make them count.

5. Make sure that Hagelin, Brassard & co. turn into players that count, every shift

Hagelin and Brassard are examples of very good hockey players that right now doesn't seem to be able to establish themselves as 2nd line scorers in this league. Instantly we are starting to hear talks about dumping them.

The best teams in this league always however manage to make these guys really count. Filpulla for a long time was a 3rd line player for Detroit and definitely played a big part in them making it to the SCF's two times and winning the Cup once. Det regulary had Hudler on a 4th line. Bolland in Chi became a pro after a 2.2 PPG season in the OHL. He was much more of a finesse player when he came up. 6'0 175 lbs.

Brassard is a very talented hockey player. Not many teams in this league got a Brassard in their system to spare out side the top 2 line. Had Brassard been drafted by Chicago, I am sure everyone would be in love with him. Ohhhhh they are so good can even play Brassard on a 3rd line. Eventually I am sure Brassard would have turned into a 2nd lineer like Pat Sharp. I have a hard time seing Pat Sharp becoming a star had he stayed in Philly. Sharp was a year older than Brassard is today when he scored 35 pts in 80 games for them. The best teams get the luxury to be consistent with what they do. We can't compete with that with a wear and tear mentality. We can't expect to just have a Pat Sharp fall into our laps by taking a step back and getting some C-tier guy that a team is willing to spare, we have a heck of a talent in Brassard. Does play a style right now that fits a role open on a contender? No. Make him play that style then.

6. Tweak the roster

We got a roster hand picked for Torts and AV has a very diffrent philosopy. The diffrence is clear with a kid like Pouliot, I am sure we all can agree that Pouliot is miles ahead of Torts favorits Asham, Powe and co.

We need more puck moving ability from the blueline. We need players that are more comfortable with the puck. Given that we now spend time in the attacking zone, we could use a sniper. A PF woudn't hurt (wouldn't have hurt under Torts either...).

See what you can find on the trade market. Look for hockey trades. Hockey trades always seem to be the last option for this team and its fans. Its always 4 for 1 pickups of stars or dumps or whatever. We have 20 roster players and 3-4 guys on the farm. Deal a player that is good for another player that is good but fits you better.

7. Pray on -- ONE -- hail mary going your way

Be it a trade, pick, unsigned kid, UFA signing or whatever, our core lacks a bit of "it"-factor that we must find. By just fixing our defense, going back to being a team that at least is very hard to score goals on, we should definitely have a roster that really can support players and let a creative guy do his work.

Vancouver got Näslund for Stojanov. Philly got Giroux with a late first. Tampa got MSL for free and BR with a late round pick and Dan Boyle almost for free. Detroit picked Z and Dats with 7th rounders. Franzen was a late round pick. Boston signed Chara as a UFA. Ottawa got E Karlsson with a mid-first. NJD picked up Kovalchuk for Oduya, Bergfors and an avg prospect. Duncan Keith is a 2nd rounder that Chicago developed. Calgary made sure to get a real grade A prospect when they dealt Joe N, Jarome Iginla. Ottawa picked up Daniel Alfredsson with a 6th round pick. Teams that made it to the SCF's with some core players that they got real cheap. Sj is a long time contender and got Jumbo Joe for Marco Sturm, Wayne Primeau and Brad Stuart.

Boston built their entire team with out-side of the 1st round picks and never had top picks in their core. Bergeron, Lucic, Marchand and Krejci. 2nd-3rd round picks...

If we run this org really well, accomplish a lot of things that are set out above, and somehow can find a player that really comes here and thrives, you know, say a Giroux like steal that excels on a top line with Nash and Kreider and pot like 90 pts or whatever, while we have tweaked the roster some by say picking up a younger right shooting PMD that can grow into this team, we could certainly be a contender. We would be really strong in all areas.

I am not saying that we should not consider real hard whether to deal G and Cally or buy out Richards. But I am just not at all sold on the thinking that if the current roster we have now the way they play right now won't win the cup, lets just take three four steps backwards and play the lottery again approch. That's opting out and more of the same as we always try to do in NY. We have assets on this roster and opertunity's are always there. Its tougher when more players are getting trade restrictions in their contarcts, but vets can agree to be traded. If its a trade that really make sense, we have assets to give up.

Oh, is that all?

If Staal is dead set on going to Carolina, Ryan Murphy needs to be part of the package coming to us. If Staal continues to play at the level he played last night for the rest of the year, Carolina will have to add other significant pieces to that too.

If Girardi is asking the moon, then maybe it's time to let go of him too. I think, currently, he's worth a top prospect and a first. That's a coup.

MDZ and Brassard should be able to net you a piece you need moving forward. A top 4 D. A 2c. A 2 rw. One of those.

I wouldn't mind resigning Callahan if he comes game in and out playing the way he's done the last 2 games. Hard hitting, finishing his checks, demonstrating his leadership on the ice rather than through words. Can he stay on the ice long enough though to be an effective player for us? That'll always remain the question.

Only problem is.... That's rebuilding. Sather is 1) not a rebuilder and 2) has already resigned Hank to a mega deal and in win-now mode.

Meaning, Girardi will likely be resigned. Callahan will likely be resigned. And the mediocre merry-go round will continue to be in tact.

Murphy Lindholm McGinn to Rangers
Staal and Brassard to Canes

would this be close?? what else is needed

Or, Carolina can realize they're not going to compete this year or the next, keep their good, young, cheap and controllable assets and just sign Marc Staal as a UFA.

Del Zotto's value has never been lower. Brassard is an inconsistent RFA to be with a QO of 3.7M. Nobody is trading for Brassard and giving up a completely similar player.

Love this "win-now" myth.

Staal has been playing like his #1 self the past few games (especially last night) and it has been so great to see. If he could continue that play through the rest of the year, I would love to sign him to an extension. But if he really is a flight risk, then we must entertain the prospect of trading him, as mentioned above...

But his play recently has been such a breath of fresh air...

You should try and apply for a consulting job within the Canes. I'm sure they can use your wonderfully optimistic outlook for their team. Might as well not make any moves.

Oh they were in 3rd place last night too. Picking their play up. Need defensive and goalie help. Staal fits the bill.

I'd love to keep him, but again, if he's unwilling to resign with us he should be moved. Can't lose him for nothing.
