That's one thing people don't care about or forget when they keep crying buyout on long-term deals like Volch...it's easy enough to say when it ain't our money

From a financial standpoint, he'd be better off traded then and we eat X amount.

Don't you have to put a player on waivers before you buy him out?

His contract isn't a total monstrosity (such as Redden or Gomez) and his play hasn't taken a total nosedive to the point of playing his way out of the NHL.

If Volch was put on waivers, I'd bet he gets picked up.

Or people wait till he's bought out and sign him for cheaper.

Depends on their financial situation and if they believe they'd have a shot to sign him or not.
There are a lot of teams like Colorado, icing a glorified AHL defensive lineup, that are hurting real bad.

You really think Volch would be picked up if he was put on waivers? I guess it's possible if it's the Isles, or Colorado or one of the cap floor teams.

All in all he doesn't have a contract like Gomez, Redden or Dipietro.

That's a possibility under the new rules too, you can eat up to half the salary in a deal. I could picture something like that happening to get the cap number off the book and clear the roster spot.

Volch's contract is bad, it's not horrendous. It'd give plenty of GMs hesitation, particularly the term. That being said...
I'd say it'd be 50/50 of him clearing waivers.

I think Tallinder and Volch are the best buyout candidates right now. We don't have anybody but Kovy and Zajac signed after 2016. Greene is signed until 2015, and that's it.

I can't see Tallinder playing here next year in the lineup nightly. Lou will unload him for what he can. If not then I can see him getting bought out since that's $3.375 million next year. We could use that to re sign Clarkson, and maybe even pick up someone else on the market.

They might even be less reluctant to buy out a guy with just a year remaining.

Tallinder would be traded. A team would take him.

Unfortunately we might have to put him back in to see what he's really worth. I don't think he's really gonna get much though. I'm thinking more than ever it's probably a draft pick. He's signed until next year, and his contract isn't very good.

I definitely believe a team would pick up Volch off of waivers. He is an above-average third pairing defenseman and a slightly below average (if not average) second pairing D man.

I think Tallinder can be moved as well. Lou might have to bite the bullet and give up a late pick or a lesser prospect but it can be done.

man id love to see versteeg on kovys other wing but not sure if florida would deal him. wonder about fayne and josefson/tedenby? doubtful the theyd have any interest in tallinder or volchenkov. im a fan of bergenheim too, although im not exactly sure of his situation with his "injury" (if hes hurt he cant be dealt) and whatever the deal is about the grievance he filed which may have burned some bridges.

Volchenkov would be a great fit on the Rangers, honestly. But that won't happen.

If we buy him out, and he clears I can see him signing there.

Then again Torts could be gone by that time, and they could have a totally different system.

By the way this is just a dream scenario, but imagine Lou trades one of his amnesty buyouts for that first round pick back? I'm sure it would be more realistic if he gives them both back. How about give back one of the amnesty buyouts, and a forfeit a second to get the first back?

It's just a fantasy though. I'd imagine a couple teams in the league won't be using both anyway.

Meh we should have just signed Semin. I wanted him on the Devils from the moment I knew Zach was gone. The was Alexander is playing on Carolina I wouldn't be shocked if he gets extended either.

You all have to admit that 1 year 7 year deal looks like a total steal right now for Carolina. I don't see how that couldn't have been offered by Lou. (Unless Lou straight up didn't want him to begin with)

But Semin playing with Kovy would just straight up be filthy. A Semin-Zajac-Kovalchuk line (Because we all know Petey D won't put Kovy on LW) would be amazing in every single way.

I think a fair trade for Tallinder would actually be someone like a Brenden Morrow. He's fallen out of favor in Dallas IMO (The guy is playing on their 4th line for cryin' out loud!) and I think could be a very effective (and cheap) option for us. Clarke MacArthur & Mason Raymond all seem like realistic choices as well.

If the Rangers hadn't already sold the farm and weren't our bitter rivals, a Volchenkov/Anismov swap could have been plausible, especially with their D-men dropping like flies.

But we'll never know.

Weiss will be a Devil.

it's a 48 games season, I don't say they gonna make it but they're not gonna throw their season away by the trading deadline neither.

Again, I say wait awhile. The Leafs never disappoint with their collapses. Unless you're a Leafs fan, then they always disappoint.

Tallinder would be traded. A team would take him.

Agreed. Waivers is not the way to get rid of him. There are teams for whom he is an upgrade on defence.

I'm aware of the famous "Leafs epic collapse" but you don't want to take into consideration neither the specific context of a shortened season nor the fact that I'm only talking about the leafs remaining in the playoffs race by the deadline.

A team throwing its season away would mean they're at minimum 8 pts behind the 8th seed by the trade deadline, and we're only 1 month and a week away from it. Sorry, the season is so short, I don't see the Leafs tanking.

Versteeg on our team would be a double win. He's been killing us lately.

It's only speculation but reading the Kings fans reaction I think we could get closer to see Simon Gagné traded.

He's a winger, he can play top 6 minutes, Kings wouldn't mind some defensive support and the most important he's a rental player. One of the best players we could realistically get.

Lots of rumblings on the internet about the Flames shopping around Anton Babchuk & Bouwmeester.

Who'd be up for us swapping out A-Train, Tallinder & Urbom & some other scrap heapings we have for them? :sarcasm:

Yeah, the Leafs have 16 games left between now and the deadline (they've already played 20) and they're five points up on everyone for a playoff spot. It'd take a pretty spectacular meltdown - and two of the bubble teams getting hot - to be so far out of it they'd dump by April 2. Especially considering how much they need to make the playoffs, they're not going to white-flag it until they're completely underwater.

I'm not sure how much activity there'll be this year in general with many teams looking to cut salary, and most teams will still be alive.

To me, this was the missed opportunity. There's no saying if we were ever seriously in on him, but I thought with Zach's departure, Semin would've been a perfect fit. Hell, I think it's not out of the question that he *could* have been an upgrade from Parise. I think his defensive play is underrated, his tool kit ranks among the best, and he could have been a real complement to Kovy on the top line. Move Kovy to left :)amazed:) slap Semin on the right and call it an off-season...

Real dollars could have been a problem though... I suppose we'll never know.
