I maybe in the minority, but this Pitt team doesn't scare me.
They can score goals sure, but can they defend?
They have defensive issues, their goaltending is iffy.
They have had the Rangers number recently and may beat the Rangers in 5, but I don't see them getting past the Bruins.

Pitt had that big run at the end of last season too. Their game slipped as the winning streak went on. They lost in six to Philly. The 92-93 Penguins had a huge run late that season. They struggled in the playoffs against Jersey(pre-Marty and Lemaire). Lost to the Islanders in 7. Peak too soon.

All I am going to say is that now may be the time to maximize the return on Gaborik. NTC to only 10 teams. Teams like LA and Boston will be looking to respond. I am sure they both offered hefty packages for Iginla. Iginla had a very short list and it seems like Pitt was the place for him.

110% they are in mix for best return, along w/Wings and Sens (not sure they're serious enough).

But the sleeper is Chicago.
They have the assets, and other than Gabby is RW not LW (sounds familiar?) we can def do some kinda deal, even if they have to bribe us to eat a piece of the deal into next year. [Believe they can flip Hossa to LW].]

Serious question, would anyone mind paying Clowe 3 million/season for 4 years as opposed to Prust 2.5 million/season for 4 years? That would be a contract I could get behind for Clowe.

Thanks, no thanks.
Do not want Clowe at any price. Too slow.
Would have been happy to keep Prust and give him a raise, but like everybody else couldn't see how we could afford 10 over 4 yrs.

Bs and Ps will see who is hotter at that moment, could go either way, right now Pens favorite.

Bold: Their D is improved. Their O keeps the puck out of the d zone A LOT. Letang is injured on/off this year but I expect he'll be there when it counts. True, MAF has superior talent for reflexes, etc but is hot/cold about skill to control same; however, Pens other G this year is big improvement, and plays well against us.

Yeah and he wants to showcase his worth since he isn't getting prime ice time (Burns is playing as a top 6 winger). He may come to NY for cheap leveraging his NTC if he feels he won't get top 6 time in Boston. If he is out of shape, and thats the reason as to his dip in play, then Torts is not playing him double digit minutes a night.

I would kill for Glencross, but he would cost a considerable amount cause of his contract, but then again Feaster is a lame duck, maybe he hooks up his old boys in NY during the fire sale.

id take him but at what cost.. Ryan Bourque and Boyle get it done :sarcasm: im sure some team would offer a good amount for him

The Devils got smoked that series. Unless you think winning that one game and ending their playoff winning streak hurt them the next round.

But the Pens lost both those years because of goaltending. Bareass was a sieve just like Fleury.

Folks, this may be a speculation thread, but you cannot frame your own speculation as insider information. If you have seen/read/heard comments about something, please cite your source or your post will be deleted.

Kevin Allen of USA Today did a buyer and seller list. He listed the Rangers as both buyer and seller. He mentioned Gaborik being available and they're looking at an offensive D which isn't breaking any news. None of those things will happen in the next 6 days. Zuccarello gives them 14 forwards if you believe Newbury is staying. Torts doesn't sound very happy with Hamrlik and Stralman. He made some comments today after the morning skate. Cutting down to 4-5 D. The Rangers have 49 SPCs. Swapping 2 for 1 at forward allows them to add a depth D and add another D. Torts was Michael Kay yesterday and he didn't say much about Staal when he was asked. They need a D if Staal can't return.

Wow. And now suddenly this is a team that needs to rip it down and rebuild? Yeesh, I know we've had a bad season to this point, but I'm sorry, but that doesn't make much sense. There is too much young or prime talent here. I realize Gabby and Richards have been underperforming - and frankly I'm now in favor of getting whatever we can for them and moving on with the rest of the "real" core - but this should be a very good team. There is WAY too much quality here that is WAY too young for this to be a legitimate rebuild candidate.

How do you call a team that has:

FORWARDS
J.T. Miller 20
Chris Kreider 21
Derek Stepan 22
Carl Hagelin 24
Rick Nash 28
Ryan Callahan 28

DEFENSEMEN
Michael Del Zotto 22
Ryan McDonagh 23
Marc Staal 26
Dan Girardi 28

GOALIES
Henrik Lundqvist 31 (bearing in mind that goalies play effectively much longer than any other position)

And a good group of prospects a rebuild candidate? I agree that changes need to be made (I mentioned a couple above), but I hardly call this a team in need of a rebuild. It SHOULD be a team that's in contention for the next five years - with smart management and coaching, that is.

i know its a long shot but what are the chances the Blues moving David Backes. if the Rangers want a power forward, he is the guy to get if he would consider NY a possibility. i know he has a no trade clause, but id gladly move Del Zotto to get him as long as NYR has a backup plan for an offensive dman not Boyle or JBo, someone the same age as Del Zotto, maybe Zach Bogosian.... Backes is something this team needs..... grit heart nastiness and skill...

A trade with the Blues revolving around Gaborik and Shattenkirk would make lots of sense. Question would be if St. Louis would be comfortable taking on Gaborik's contract. They certainly have the cap space

well you see in Ranger land no one remembers that last yr the team was first in the East , all they remember is in the last 30 games its been a struggle.

this ship can turnaround. The potential is there.

Shattenkirk? No. No.

No.

So sick and tired of the trades for more defense.

Shattenkirk falls behind Girardi, McDonagh and Staal on the blueline depth chart.

We need forwards, more specifically, ones that can score.

You dont use Marian Gaborik to get you a 2nd pairing defenseman. You use him to get top six forwards. We need offense.

Obviously the Rangers would need a top 9 winger back to replace him, but that's besides the point.

Who on this team can move the puck well out of the back end besides Del Zotto? McDonagh has shown flashes, but he's not quite there yet. Stralman is decent, but he's a bottom pairing guy.

Rumor has it the Rangers want Dan Boyle. Personally, I'd rather have a guy with the same skill set that's 12 years younger and doesn't carry a 6.6 million cap number.

Shattenkirk is better than all those guys offensively and no slouch defensively, either.

I have zero idea, in the first place, why St. Louis would be interested in a Gaborik for Shattenkirk swap -- and even less of an idea of why you would degrade a damn good player.

how about something like Gaborik, Boyle and St. Croix to Blues for Backes and Jackman??? when Backes isnt score at least he is noticable unlike Gaborik. Jackman will help with the lack of grit and toughness on defense something needed but most fans rather trade for another offensive dman with no clear crease ability

Wonderful! Where do I sign?

Oh right, the Blue would actually have to agree :(

Pietrangelo and Cole are making him quite expendable in my mind, but I have no idea about what St. Louis may be thinking.

For a scorer like Gaborik that might put the Blues over the top offensively, they might cough Shattenkirk up. Both teams win.

Backes is just about as untouchable to the Blues as Callahan is to us. I'd give up anyone not named Lundqvist, Stepan, Staal, or McDonagh for him. The rest is open season.

Theres no way St Louis is trading Backes + for Gaborik +, and as for Shattenkirk, he may be a bit better offensively, but we dont need blueline offense nearly as much as we need forward offense.

We have one go-to line for scoring up front (Nash, Hags, Step). The other three lines are often juggled, and the third and fourth are often completely useless.

This Ranger team is basically working with one forward line. Thats ****ing atrocious.

1/4 lines. Id much rather use a 40 goal scorer to get more offense back in the form of forwards.

The Iginla deal should be a wake up call for people who think the Rangers are going to be able to make a killing with a Gaborik trade.

Sure, Iginla is older and a UFA, so Gaborik will have a bit more value -- but some of that is mitigated by Gaborik's struggles this season, and the fact hes a ghost when hes not scoring goals...same cant be said about Iginla.

Nonethless, he is traded for 2 B-level prospects, and a 1st rounder that'll be close to 30th overall.

My only saving grace is that Jay Feaster is one of the worst GM's in the league.

But the thought we can hoodwink a team for a top 6 forward, a top prospect, and a 1st rounder is pretty far fetched.

Iginla had a NMC and told Feaster he wanted to go to Pittsburgh. And he's a 35 year old UFA who has not had a very good year himself, on pace for 22 goals and 55 points. Gaborik has similar #s, and is younger.

The situations aren't remotely comparable. Frankly, I don't know what Gaborik would fetch. All I know is that he won't be traded if the package doesn't improve this team.

nor should he, Gaborik returning to himself is better than any player we could acquire.
