My biggest question is why can't this team develop bottom 6 talent from within?

It seems that every prospect worth noting is touted as having 2nd line upside, which is soaked up by the fanbase on a team starved for offense. If thats everyones upside, then it becomes a bit redundant.

Why is the quest for 3rd/4th liners so difficult? Why do the (usually poor) decisions that fill it always seem to go outside the organization?

This has been a problem for years. You'd figure God's gift to drafting, Gordie Clark, would have this fixed by now.

Agreed with this. We constatntly keep saying that because of our drafting positions we never seem to hit home runs and have to settle for 2nd and 3rd liners. Where are these guys??
We did lose many guys (home grown) in the off season, and similar to Chicago after they won the cup (btw, not comparing us to Chi), and they screwed up with the offer sheets and had to unload many of their bottom 6 (Ladd, Buf, Versteeg, etc...)it takes time to replenish, especially from within (Chi finished 8th in the West last year). However, look at them now!
Let's hope Sather and company have a plan this off season...

I think Torres and Clowe will end up in NY before the deadline is over. Pyatt will be gone. Powe/Boyle will be gone as well. Just a feeling I get. Clowe will sign an extension as well.

2 guys with 5 goals in 55 games combined. That'll solve this team's problems. And lets extend the guy with 0 goals.

Scary part is I wouldnt be shocked if this happens. I hope to hell it doesnt.

Im sure they have a plan.

After 13 years, Im also pretty sure its of the tunnel vision variety as has been Sather's approach at building a roster since he got here.

They would shore up this teams bottom six which has been a revolving door all season. As long as they don't over pay it would be a good move.

And aged, overpaid mercenary is brought in to "shore up the bottom 6"

Where have I heard this before? Forgive me for thinking it wont work because it hasnt worked.

I wouldn't mind adding a couple of guys who can mix it up in place of Powe, Pyatt, Newbury and one of Kreider/Miller.

If the identity of this team is going to be to be difficult to play against. You need those types of players.

Chimera would be another one who I wouldn't have been surprised about but the Caps are back in the race.

Torres has 10 points in 27 games. Please list the players in the bottom-6 who have the production? Are you saying he wouldn't be an upgrade?

IMO Miller is not ready for NHL playoff hockey yet. Neither is the team we have seen this season.
Pyatt for Torres
Asham, Yogan and a 3rd for Clowe
Picks/prospects for one of Jokinen/ Antropov
Eminger plus something small for Sarich

Hagelin - Stepan - Nash
MZA - Bucky Beaver - Gaborik
Kreider - Jokinen/Antropov - Callahan
Clowe - Boyle/Powe - Torres

The Rangers also need an infusion of speed and skill in their bottom six. Guys who make plays with the puck and complete a simple pass. They also need many more goals from those spots. Nash and Callahan on the right. Stepan and Richards at center. Hagelin and Kreider on the left. Acquiring a left winger drops either Hagelin or Kreider to the bottom six. Miller as the 3rd line center. Fasth as third line RW. Lindberg as the 4th line center who can be moved in different situations. That leaves 2-3 bottom six spots for players who can intiate contact. A pest.

They have brought in the WRONG players. Players who don't fit the system and don't mesh well. They need a skilled 3c and some bangers for the bottom-6. Boyle should never play center again in his career in NY. He is more useful as a winger and a person who can take face-offs than as a defensive center who can not distribute the puck.

Of course they have brought in the wrong players.

And after all these mistakes, its mind-boggling that you think Ryan Clowe and Raffi Torres dont fall into that category as well.

RB, I like your thinking (I see you've left out Gabby & Boyle), but I think that line up is VERY soft and too young to compete in the next 1-2 yrs, but we can def grow with that.

I think they can be part of the solution here, yes. The team needs more truculence. They are not going to match up skill-wise with Pittsburgh or Boston. They need a 3c with skill. Roy? He will cost too much. Clowe + Torres added to this years bottom-6 is a good direction to try and take this team.

Thank god for the Flyers.

I was worried we might actually be trading for Clowe.

Why is it mind boggling? This team is toothless right now, and is it any surprise after we lost Prust, Dubinsky? Players in the Clowe, Torres mold fit the current play style of this coach and could probably give us more for this current season, than any other “bigger†move involving Gaborik right now.

Depending on what we need to give up to get these guys, I like these players for THIS year. I mean how worse can Clowe's offensive production get, he has 0 goals...I'm sure a change of scenery will be good for him. However, I never give up a 1st rounder for him and def not sign him for 3-4 yrs at > $3Mn plus.

Toughness isn't the biggest issue.

Goal scoring is, where the Rangers are an embarrassing dead last in the league.

Getting a guy with 0 goals playing with the likes of Havlat, Couture and Pavelski isn't going to be any different than playing with Hagelin, Callahan and Stepan.

agreed. I can see him regaining his scoring touch somewhat, with top 6 minutes though. Clowe is the type of player sorely missing on this team. He's risky at that salary, because there is just as good of a chance he doesn't work out... but it could work...

Torres is another player we need to look at. We are way to easy to play against, and this guy would bring that dangerous element that we need.

The only way can salvage anything out of this season is if we stay within ourselves and make moves that compliment this current system. Signing agitators, spark plug players could be just the ingredient missing from this group.

it can be argued that the scorers are not motivated. I mean if they’re not injured than what the heck is there problem? Mid life crisis? We need energy, emotional, spark plug players. It’s an ingredient that has always been effective in NY, and it’s no different now.

The cap of $64.3M doesn't allow the Rangers to load up on experience. Even if/when they trade Gaborik, they are taking back salary in the trade. Anaheim has gotten production out of Holland and Etem. Bonino has been a good player for them too. Young players. Chicago with Saad,Shaw and Kruger. Leddy too. Jimmy Hayes of BC has played some for them. Jeremy Morin scored a goal yesterday. The Hawks have tried to add players but they're too expensive. Teams are knocking each other off to grab Clowe with zero goals this season. Bad shoulder. Not a great skater. Go with the youth.

You say this like there is only one thing wrong with this team.....

If your house needs new windows AND a new heating system but you can only afford new windows right now, would you do nothing?

I wouldnt get the new windows if I knew they were cracked and going to be in my house for a while.

I wouldnt mind Clowe for almost nothing going the other way. I certainly would not sign him to an extension. Thats bonkers.

What is the extension? I would definitely have interest. People act like 30 is old. 3 year extension?
