Yup thats pretty much the sad truth of it. I suppose if they continue to piss the season away they could try running 3 lines with McDavid, Nuge and Draisaitl all centring a bunch of 3rd and 4th liners just to see if it could work. I think its more likely that those players produce less and we end up tanking the value in any potential trades because no team in the league forces their stars to lug around 2 underskilled forwards while having very little offensive production from their defence.

Chia has dug the hole and the way I see it he only has 3 real options to climb out of it.
1) Wait and pray that we get at least a couple gems out of Puljujarvi, Yamamoto, Benson, Maksimov, and Safin and suffer in the meantime
2) Find some under-utilized NHL/AHL/EuroAsia/College players for cheap/free that fit well and can produce with our centres
3) Trade prospects and draft picks for scoring wingers

A little from all of options A, B and C will likely be the path he takes.

I think Drai not being used at C says more about our wingers than it does about him.

McDavid is already carrying a third liner. RNH is saddled with the slowest man in the NHL on his left side. Draisaitl at C would have, what, exactly, to work with? The corpse of Cammalleri and Ryan Strome?

The talent level on this team is seriously lacking.
He'd still be playing against the other teams 3rd line, though. 3rd line forwards and probably 2nd or 3rd pairing D man. Makes the opposing team plan better and adjust having to have pairings that have to defend Mcdavid or Drai because the coach can't basically line match the entire game with their best D men against the Mcdavid line. There is literally no reason at this point not trying it for a game or 2. Fans and it looks like the coach are just willing to die on the 1st line sword in fear of failing with running the 3 line team.

They can try it I guess, but when the wingers inevitably kill every play and don't bury their offensive chances ever and everyone's production looks terrible this fan base will turn on those 3 centres despite it not being their fault at all.

.......and this is exactly what should have been done this summer. We were supposedly on the tail end of the build. Why are we hoarding picks? Now it's too late - no one's moving a bigger name player.

Well the problem with that move is we have Lucic, Russell, Pouliot buyout clogging up 12M over the next 4 years. Any player you trade picks for without salary going out will not be something you can afford under the cap next year unless it goes up 5 or 6M, in fact thats why Eberle was moved. Chia will look pretty dumb though getting nothing for Eberle if the cap does go up a lot next year and he was actually something they didn't need to move right away. Even this year he could have stayed, which makes it even more sad that Chia traded him after a down season for an absolute plug in Strome. I'd rather he have retained half on Eberle and got something useful in return or just straight up traded him for picks/prospects. At least then he would have had something to trade for a player we could use. Stromes going to have negative value by the end of this season.

I think we can use a James Neal right about now. Stop hoarding those draft picks and future assets!

Short sighted reactionary moves like this will only make things worse.

I recognize that the Oilers development record is trash but it's the only way to get cheap talent in the modern NHL. We have to keep trying until we can make it work.

With Read back on waivers, you’ve got to think they want to move on from him. Why not offer Fayne for him straight up? It’s a straight swap of salary and caphit, and he’s a versatile player, who could hopefully help the PK

Chia needs to decide if the team can make playoffs or not soon. If they legit think we are a James Neal away from making it than go for it.
If they think they won't make it even with a trade then they need to hold onto those picks and use them wisely this year. Lots of good players in the top 10 that all fill our needs very well.

I was thinking the same thing, either Fayne or one of the depth forwards.

Trading the 1st right now is a very bad idea unless they are getting a player who can be a solution going forward. Furthermore, Chia deals draft picks like candy, he needs to hoard them for a change. Can't be giving up valuable cheap assets right now.

Brian Lawton on twitter talking a OEL rumor of him going to the Leafs for William Nylander. Not sure how the Oilers could beat that. JP and Nurse? RNH?

If Chia misses the boat on OEL being available, he should be fired.

We have way better assets to offer up than Toronto.

Like what? TO has Nylander and Marner, two young cheap guys who have put up 60 points in the recent past. We have nothing that can top that.

There's no certainty he's even available. It's the Toronto media stirring the pot. And in what world do people get fired for not trading for something?

It would have to be Klefbom. Klefbom+RNH for OEL+cheaper center.

That's still a major overpay by the Oilers for an impending UFA. You could probably do it with one of Klef or Nuge and a first round pick if he signs.

I think it's time for the Draisaitl for OEL trade to happen. Give OEL the same contract. Trade a couple of small pieces at the same time.

Arizona desperately needs a franchise centre. We desperately need a top D that can score.

Nuge is good enough for our second line centre.

Massive risk since I don't think you can talk extensions until the summer. But I don't hate it.

You think TO is offering Marner AND Nylander for OEL? I doubt that.

What I'm saying is Oil could offer up a variation of the following:

Nurse
JP
2018 1st (looking like this pick has a good shot at top 3 overall - it has a lot of value right now)
RNH
Drai (only in 1 for 1)
Klefbom
Larsson
Yamma

Build a deal centered around 1 or 2 of those pieces and and I bet TO can't beat it, unless of course they go full idiot and offer Nylander AND Marner.

It's called missed opportunity. And it would never get discussed after someone is fired.
