The moment McDavid and Drai signed those contracts, it already sealed the fate of the team moving forward. It comes to no surprise that most of our depth will consists of rookies, AHL, and over the hill players. It'll be this way until the cap goes up to 90M

Not a rumour or anything, but it was interesting getting John Shannon's take on Chris Kreider today when Stauffer asked him about the player.

Said that Kreider was one of the most gifted power forwards in the entire league, had everything you could want in terms of ability...but no brain to go with it. Went on to say that he can be a very frustrating player to watch because of that. Also bashed him because for all of that speed and size, he will never engage physically.

Something to keep in mind, anyway. He has great physical tools but he's got his warts too, and at 26 he's close to being a finished product. But then if he didn't have warts he wouldn't be available.

He’d be a good player in the finals. Have a player that is good at running over goalies :sarcasm:

It's 27 goals, goals are a premium in this league, not all points are equal. He will hit 30+ goals this year, the only reason he did not last year is because he was not given top unit PP time now that Lucic has found a way to fail himself off the top unit.

30+ goal scorers get $5 million dollars in this league. Actually that's usually the low end of what they get.

Alex Radulov got 6.25 per for 18 goals + 54 points last year and he's two years older than Maroon to boot and is not a power forward.
Yeah he had 12 more points than Maroon and did it while not playing with McDavid.
Goals are important but he isn't scoring 27 sniper goals. He is the kind of guy who is good at rebounds and crashing the net.

His HIGHEST goal total outside of last year was 11. You do not pay a player like that $5mill+.

If he repeats that and bumps up his assists than absolutely you have an argument. But after 1 year that was a VERY large outlier in his career...yeah its overpaid.

It would be an easier arguement to make if RNH, Lucic, etc. weren't such bums that Maroon was outproducing them in many respects.

It's not easy to ask really your 3rd best employee to accept a salary that's the 5th or 6th highest on the team.

His agent can very easily point and say "hey my guy is outproducing this guy who you're paying $6 millon dollars to". It's also why Leon's agent was never going to budge on his salary demands ... why should he take only a million measly more than Nugent Hopkins or Lucic when he clearly was far better than them? You have to be careful who you pay money to because it will be used as a comparable.

If you can get Maroon locked in at 4 per ... (5/5/5/3/2.5) I think you have to do it. If Strome has to walk for nothing so be it. If Kassian has to go, so be it. We're not going to get a top line LW off the UFA for less than $6 million.

Unless you want to play Drake Caggiula as McDavid's LW and gamble a season on that working.

I'd be more concerned with what Nurse will be asking.
4M x 8?

Maroon (4) McDavid (12.5) Puljujarvi (0.985)
Lucic (6 UGH) Draisaitl (8.5) Yamamoto (0.98)
blank (1) RNH (6) Kassian (1.9)
blank (0.9) blank (1) Khaira (0.7)
blank (0.7)

Klef (4.1) Larsson (4.1)
Nurse (4) Sekera (5.5)
Russell (4.1) Bear (0.9)
Gryba (0.9)

Talbot (4.1)
Broissoit (1)

Poops (1.3)

= 74 mill, but that's tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. And your bottom six will be thin, and you'll just have to live with that.

I'm talking about players based on actual worth not reputation. If players were paid on what they're actually worth Maroon should be the 3rd highest forward on the team but we have to ask him to take half of Lucic despite being a way better player.

How would you feel working at a job where you were far more valuable to the company and worked harder and achieved better results and the company asked you to be paid 1/2 of the another guy who does less than you.

That's all I'm saying.

If I was working in a section of that company that thrived because of the hard work someone else was doing for me, I wouldn't say a damned thing.

That's not even including bonuses
Goes to show you that some players should be taking discounts.

Would you take a discount if it means not getting your coworkers and friends laid off or milk as much money and see your company go bankrupt?

That's the hockey equivalent of putting a pair of used socks on Kijiji.
Just another player we took a risk on and didn't turn out. Makes our off season look even worse. Might as well of just kept Pouliot. Now we have his buyout for 2 years and are looking to throw away his replacement. Yikes.

Chia is looking like a colossal failure at this point. The one move people were actually okay way has failed miserably. Jokinen doesn't even look like he belongs in the NHL. People were propping him up as a defensively sound player but he clearly hasn't even been that this year.

So Shipachyov is done in Vegas?

They have a ton of cap room going forward for Lucic and we can retain, we need to ask Milan if he'd be OK with going there. Family can move in to LA.

WHY the f*** are we shopping Jussi now? I mean, what's that gonna do, get us a top 6 scorer?

Slepyshev, I can understand. Jokinen, not so much.

Not sure why we didn't just keep Pitlick, lol. I would keep Jokinen too unless the plan is to bring in Iginla or something.

it doesnt really make sense. Only reasonable explanation is Pitlick wanted to test the UFA market and wouldnt resign here
