The Penguins made the playoffs with Crosby in his second year. The next year they also had a poor start. Guess what? The coach was fired 5 games in. They were in the Finals the next June.

Accountability needs to exist within an organization.

Being gift wrapped Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl and still missing the playoffs 66% of the time would be a disgrace.

So you find 1 somewhat comparable example and then use that as a basis for an argument for potential major changes?
Come on man...your posts are so over the top I dont even want to bother responding most of the time.

Dial it down a bit.

So Toronto, who had no benefit of McDavid/Draisaitl going into their rebuild making the playoffs likely two years in a row is OK, but Oilers front office gets a pass for only having 1/3 with McDavid, Draisaitl, and Hall to start with.

Chiarelli would be fired by any other team in the league if he delivered that result. This is not about being "nice" to people. This is a results oriented business.

I’m not sold on the rumour (but appreciate it being shared). Galchenyuk makes some sense since he “can” play C and management likes versatile players. Wouldn’t be shocked to see Strome go back in a package for him.

What you were saying is its ok that he stays if they miss this year. I'm saying that's not OK. Rationally and calmly. That is not an acceptable result for any GM that's given Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Taylor Hall to start with.

Needing a year to "adjust to being a favorite" is a lame excuse. Where is that for Toronto or Columbus?

How about not projecting a bunch of fear based conclusions and lets see how this season plays out.

Just for the record I do think they will get into the playoffs, saving Chia's hide. But if we're talking a scenario where they don't (which is becoming a possibility), the idea that he should be allowed to stick around is what I vehemently disagree with.

2/3 years missed in the playoffs after staring with Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Taylor Hall and ending up with the a team that still misses anyway and is fully capped out is ridiculously shameful.

Not only should Chiarelli be fired he would likely never get a GM job in this league again. He better be praying to the hockey gods that this turns for him, because his ass is toast otherwise. His legacy will be the "guy who lost both the Tyler Seguin and Taylor Hall deals" and he'll never live that down.

I'm not so sure I'm sold either but this guy talks to people in the know in the org. And this is what he heard. Looking at Galchenyuk.

Well, he has a modified NTC in 4 more years...

Hopefully he doesn't completely burn out before then.

If McDavid gets hit by a car and Draisaitl gets arrested for being too attractive the Oilers will lose more games than they play and Chiarelli will be blasting off in a rocket ship.

Just to remind people who post stuff like this ... you have to contact a mod first and clear your source with them first before doing the "my cousin's brother's uncle's fiance works for the Oilers and told me we're getting XYZ" type stuff.

If you really think that they will make the playoffs then why bother with the rest of your post?

I get that you are upset with the how the season started and want heads to roll or trades to be made but if you really think the team is going to make the playoffs then why not just support why you think that's going to happen?
Instead you go on these fear based 'what if' hypotheticals.

Doesn't make sense to me.

This team has bigger issues than Lucic, he’ll get his 45-50 points.

Man the pitchforks are out aren’t they? Shouldn’t be long until we see a “Trade McDavid” thread.

I think they can, but the impossible (missing) certainly isn't impossible anymore. If they continue to piss away games (and hate to say it but Pittsburgh coming in here pissed off is going to be a tough one) ... it becomes more and more closer to a coin flip as to whether they make it or not. A coin flip can go either way.

The way things have gone around here lately this actually seems like a valid thread topic. :D

I wonder how the Habs value him? He might be cheaper than a guy thinks?

Exactly those league minimum players need to step it up

Did you see Leon and Larsson in their monkey suits for Halloween?

Connor is probably heading over to the police station to bail him out right now.

I dont think that it was ever impossible that they would miss the playoffs. Why would you think that was true?
I think you just uncovered the reason for these wild trade and firing tangents you are proposing.

I would say

It was 85-15 (for/against) of them making/missing playoffs on opening night.

That's probably down to 60-40 now. I still given them the edge to make it but the odds that they don't are certainly growing.

If they do continue to piss away games, it will be 50-50 soon. If they are not in a playoff spot by US Thanksgiving the odds likely shift to below 50% for them making it (and that's generally agreed upon by lots of people). But if they are close I'd give them the benefit of the doubt there and keep them at 50-50 because of the McDavid factor.
