I hear Sens were close on Giroux. He wanted 8 million for 5 years guaranteed and no trade clause. There are plenty of takers.
Good to see you're still around dropping nuggets like this and then refusing to elaborate. Haven't heard from you in awhile, thought you mightve been drafted.

Having said that, that's an absolute crock. No way a 34 year old is looking for 5 years "guaranteed".

This team is missing a mentor that can actually play, and Giroux fills that need. Now's not the time to dwell on slight overpayments. They need to get it right this time.

I don't mind overpaying him for 2 years. But 3+ years is going to be extremely tricky.

Sanderson will be coming off his ELC
It will be DeBrincat's first UFA eligible season, so if we sign him for more than 1yr and/or his QO next summer, this premium will be baked into his contract.
Norris may potentially be coming off a bridge deal (assuming we're signing him to a bridge this summer)
We'll have Stutzle also off his ELC by then.

On second look, Giroux for 3 years could work with the following:
Norris would need to sign a 3yr bridge
Ryan's 1.833M buyout is coming off the books
White's 625k cap benefit will be in effect

But no more than 3 years.

Here's our chance to sign the next Filip Forsberg!!!!
HFSens obsession with this player was insane.

Thats the type of contract he signs with a proven contender. He will come here for more term or money. He wants a cup.

Bingo. Thats when this team really should be hitting its peak. Need to keep him around for more than 2 years.
All else being equal I'd agree with you....but that's why I said it depends what he's thinking. If he's wanting to lean towards family stability and plans on retiring here, maybe it's a good option for him.

I do think with Giroux and a D upgrade we can be very competitive over the 3 year deal

Wow. I wondered what he wanted salary & term wise, but this is a little steep. But, that's why I was being cautious until we learned more about the desired contract.

If we actually end up a cap team there isn't much to worry about at this point. We're positioned well in that regard, even if we add 11 mil or so in new players over the next few days.
Norris + Stutzle + DeBrincat + Sanderson + Giroux? That's alot more than 11M

Problem is, what proven contenders can, or want to, add a 34-year-old winger for $6M per season, that Giroux would want to go to?

Apparently, he's pretty adamant on staying in the East (he wasn't willing to waive for Colorado at the deadline, and that would have been his best bet at a Cup).

Tampa and Toronto are out.
Florida doesn't seem to be able to clear enough space.
Washington and Pittsburgh don't have a need for him.
Boston is no sure thing.
The Rangers may be in it... but rumors are they want a center like Kadri or Malkin.

That leaves Carolina, Ottawa or a team like Detroit/Buffalo.

Carolina is certainly more of a contender than we are, but their owner is every bit as cheap.

Pittsburgh might with Malkin gone. It's really either them or Carolina if not Ottawa, unless a Western team is willing to overpay big for him. Again, let's just hope we don't dwell on a NMC/NTC demand.

Could see them poking around, wondering how willing Giroux would be to go there considering the rivalry and his legacy in Philly. It'd be like Alfie going to Toronto instead of Detroit at the end of his career.

Is it just me, or are things strangely quiet on the Giroux front?

I feel like if Giroux was contemplating multiple teams, we'd be hearing some buzz. Could it basically be a done deal?

I could totally see Malkin going to Carolina.

It does seem like it's either getting done quickly and he's really settled on Ottawa and made that known somehow, or he'll sign elsewhere and it was all just empty rumors. Doesn't seem like the kind of deal that will have a ton of "negotiation" if it happens, at least imo.

This is basically what I'm thinking. Especially since negotiations opened up a couple days ago, and the Connor Brown to Edmonton rumor popped up not long after that. Gives me the impression that Edmonton knows they're not getting Giroux & Ottawa moving Brown might be to make room for Giroux.
