From the posts on their forum, a lot of Islander fans are pencilling Pageau in as the 3rd line RWer for next year and have Barzal shifting back to C. That'd give them Barzal - Horvat - Nelson up the middle. They're looking for a scoring winger to pair with Barzal.

I don't think Ottawa would have any interest in Bailey. He's a cap dump to Chicago or buyout candidate. Zero value. Keeping Debrincat for 1 year and losing him for nothing would be smarter.

That's interesting, but I don't think that will end up happening.

They aren't going to pay Barzal or Horvat over 8M a year each to play on the 3rd line, and Nelson is coming off of a 75 point campaign.

Bailey played for DJ in junior and might be able to do ok playing in a bottom 6 role for a year. By no means am I taking on his contract for free, but if taking him on means getting a 2nd+ in additional return as compensation, it's not the worst idea.

Pageau, Wahlstrom/Dufour, 2024 1st (probably with some protection) is a good framework for a deal.

I don't know if Samsonov will be available, but he had a very good season in Toronto. Toronto will probably try and resign him......but...... if they can't sign him, I think Forsberg 2.75/ Samsonov 4.5 would be a nice goalie tandem.

What would a good GM have done differently heading in to last season?
Kept Brown as insurance until Formenton's situation was figured out
Used the 7th overall to address our lack of top 4 D
Taken advantage of teams like CBJ that moved top 9 forwards for peanuts (Bjorkstrand, Pacioretty, etc..)
Not trading Gus for a short-term stopgap that is barely an upgrade

Pageau + Bailey is $10 million in capspace. If we're taking on Bailey, I they best be adding multiple draft picks, especially if they don't add Wahlstrom who we might not be able to pay if we got him.

If there's a situation in which a 3rd team can get in on the deal to take Bailey so they can meet the cap floor (Ducks?) that'd make it more feasible

We would only take one of them in the deal, not both.

Bailey could probably be dumped to a 3rd party for a 2nd, especially since he only makes 3.5M in real salary with a 5M cap hit, so if we were taking on Bailey in a DeBrincat trade I'd want something similar.

Kept Paul and Brown instead of trading for Joseph and DeBrincat.

Use the resulting cap savings (probably about 3M) and extra assets to add a top 4 D like Marino or Chychrun.

Ideally we would have invested more in the D and in two-way forward depth instead of using all our cap space and assets to load up the top 6. Not a smart way to spend our limited resources.

Obviously not swapping Gustavsson for Talbot would have helped a lot too, but I can at least understand the logic in making that move.
Nick Paul is a 28 year old that's signed for 6 more years with a career high of 32 points. We got Nick Paul in the Spezza trade and I personally was advocating for him long before he became a full time player. We don't know what it would have taken for Nick Paul to sign here. Maybe you do, but the rest of Ottawa doesn't. I wouldn't want that contract.

Joseph. How many wingers can effectively play and produce without an adequate center? Do you play hockey? Do you understand how hard that is? At virtually no point last year did we have an adequate center for that 3rd line. Before we go calling out Joseph, let's give him an opportunity to play with other 3rd liners. You know that constant, legitimate complaint about bottom 6 depth? You can actually zero in on it as 3rd line inadequacy. Joseph and two guys that don't belong.

Did Connor Brown want to stay? Because what's public is he didn't.

DeBrincat. Bad year shooting wise. Otherwise he spent the year with a centre not ready for the job.

We added Chychrun. Cap space was never an issue to acquire him. It was the assets we had to give up. That was played beautifully imo.

We lost Norris. Formenton never signed. Joseph was in and out. Suppose that doesn't happen. The forward depth you mentioned would have been far less of an issue. Then what? Then you'd a been bitching that we wasted assets on forward depth that we didn't need and our limited assets should have been deployed elsewhere.

You really need a new schtick Hale. Anyone can look back in history and find a more ideal path through life.

Behind you, look out
Yotes lost out on a new arena.
The owner will be telling the GM to shed salary.

I am going to sound like a broken record, but...

Debrincat to Detroit for a 1st, 2nd, and a prospect.
All that plus Joseph, and Greig
for Keller.

They stay above the cap floor. Shed $5m in real dollars and get a spoil of riches to continue the rebuild while the league decides what to do with them.

This year there's zero excuses to miss the playoffs. If they're kept, then everyone from Dorion down to Smith should be accountable - and on a short leash. Like November 1st short leash.
I think from this is correct from the fan's perspective. We are 6 years into the rebuild (hope this doesn't start yet another argument), they acquired another good defender (Chychrun), player salaries are at the cap ceiling (or real close), and they will have new owners.

I think the average fan now expects to see the results e.g., playoffs.

Yet, I'm sure having said this, the per usual bickering will keep on going. Looking at from the extreme perspective, for some it's all bad, and for others it's all good all of the time.

I think what I've said here about Senator fans' perspective is the median, middle of the road viewpoint.

Excuses excuses.
They're not really excuses. It's a different viewpoint than what you hold and frankly one more based in reality. What I posted is not a bunch of made up shit to portray something negatively

I'll ask again. Do you / have you played hockey?
