Rumor: Trade Rumour Thread I: Post-Lockout Madness

If Gaborik scores 35+ this year, he has no reason at all to take a paycut to 5 million.

H could get 7 per again on the open market.

i was clear, we're fine WITHOUT ADDING ANYONE

I don't know how much clearer i can get now.

we've got 10 mil to get all our RFA ducks in a row.

I dont want us to go after Perry, Getzlaf, etc.

I like this team. I dont want another superstar, i want us to continue. My "plan" has always been to get 3 elite offensive players to supplement the...well...supplemental talent we have.

we've done that. I have zero desire for this team to add anyone else of consequence. 10 mil to keep the guys we have, and go to war. Give this team a few cracks at a cup.

That $10M is going to need to be used to accompany the raises due to McDonagh, Stepan, and Hagelin AND re-sign or replace 4 roster players who are UFA after this season.

Its going to be a tight fit.

Would you re-sign him if he was looking for another 5 year contract? I'd re-sign Gaborik on a ~5-6 million dollar deal for 3 more years. If he wants more than that in terms of dollars or years I would be FAR more hesitant.

Agreed, I would hope Gaborik's desire to win, would be an overwhelming factor in him signing a deal that benefits both parties. But we all know how that goes, add to that the fact it could be his final contract could complicate things...

Again, just to be clear, you do not need to re-sign the three and replace four roster players - you only need to replace one player to get to a full complement. Anyone above that is an extra - and both Torts and Slats have a history of preferring no more than one extra, if that. So, getting the roster in order is eminently doable.

What ISN'T doable is signing a big UFA without moving someone.

I love to fantasize about how our team is so tight knit, Torts has the guys respect and NY is a great place to play, especially when the team is good, and thus guys like Gabby are going to be willing to take slight paycuts to sign deals that pretty much keep them here until they're done, or almost done, in the NHL, but it does scare me when I think about the future of this particular roster and it not being together forever. These past few years has been the most I've liked our team head to toe in my mature life as a fan. Obviously, there are great players and combinations that standout from my childhood, and obviously the '94 team, but I was 9 for that. This team, starting around when Staal came into the league, has been developing into a roster that I am just in love with. It would be a dream come true if some of these guys took some hometown discounts to keep the band together.

Nearing go time everyone. I think our team is good enough the way it is. We have an optimal team IMO.

Mostly agree. Could we use a slightly better third line winger than Pyatt? Sure. I think Pyatt's gonna be pretty good, but an upgrade would obviously make us deeper. Do I love Asham? No, I would have loved if we could have kept Pruster for Asham's money. Would I like an upgrade over Bickel? Absolutely, I wish Sauer was healthy (imagine this exact roster with Sauer at 100% in Bickel's spot... dirty), but he'll improve and hopefully it will be enough to play a bit more minutes in key situations. Overall though, these are very minor tweaks and this team is absolutely as close to the real deal as it can get, IMO.

Gotcha.

Ok, so we can go after Getzlaf or Perry as long as we field a 17 man roster.

Sshhh don't tell that to Torts. I am sure he would jump on a option to dress 9 forwards and 4 Ds + Hank without a backup. We could easily afford both Perry and Getzlaf then... (j/k)

Yeah, this is not the time to make moves. We could improve on paper, but priority one, two and three gotta be to make what we have work.

Why would he move his NMC? Under no circumstances would he. He came to NY to live there and play under his favorite coach. Why would he uproot his family and go to an organization that is still in rebuild mode as he moves towards the latter part of his career?

And if we buy him out we would look like an even bigger joke and what FA is going to sign with us when they see how we treat players and show ZERO loyalty to them.

:banghead:

You are right to point out he might not move his NMC.
I did not say he would.

I simply asked, IF he was willing to go there, would we want to entertain the idea.

Loyalty depends upon circumstances.
I have nothing vs. Richards.
His production seems a little lite for what we are paying him, but yeah, when we were very threadbare it was nice to snag him.

That said, we will need to clear cap space next year for emerging contracts.
Richards is now the one huge contract we have.
We do have other options.
But we are not bad guys for seeing if we can proactively move him now for a replacement who is a free agent next season, as opposed to being forced to keep him and then having to make other painful choices on other guys I know you want to keep (Girardi, etc.).
Or, to keep Girardi, etc., we have to use the buyout on Richards anyway.

Sure that's next year.
But if Getz is an upgrade, and we are getting inside track at him, maybe he takes 1/5 mil less, maybe next contract Hank takes 1 mil less, Gaborik also, maybe we keep almost everybody.

But we are locked into Richards with his current numbers.
We have no flexibility around them if we keep him.

:)

Well Getzlaf had like 12 goals last year. That worries me. I hope we don't get him and then he changes his name to Getz-last-laf.

We all suspect that is an aberration, not a Redden.
However, getting him just for this year at an inside look, no contract issues if we don't want to pursue him is a +, as long he doesn't immediately turn into complete crap now.

I hope we don't get him. Or Perry.

Let's re-sign all of our guys. See how we do this season. See how we do next season. If we need to use another buyout, we will, and then we'll see where our needs really are and who is available. Let's see how Hagelin looks at the end of NEXT season. How Kreider and Stepan and McDonagh evolve over this 48 games plus next year's 82. Then we can worry about the next high priced addition. I love the guys we've got, but with Gaborik Nash and Richards, I've had my full of BIG name signings and acquisitions for a minute. Let's take a break.

I'd like to do this also to the extent possible.
We can keep our core.

Richards may need to go next year either for that to happen or to minimize who else may have to go.

The only way to get Perry and Getzlaf would be to buy out Richards and trade Gaborik. Do not see that happening, but you never know...:amazed:

Keep Gabby, just hope to re-sign him for a mil or so less the next time on a shorter deal.

But Richards for Getzlaf makes $$ sense.

Would you re-sign him if he was looking for another 5 year contract? I'd re-sign Gaborik on a ~5-6 million dollar deal for 3 more years. If he wants more than that in terms of dollars or years I would be FAR more hesitant.

Exactly. He got his with the last deal. Not hugely unreasonable given cap reality to ask him to take say $16 for 3 years, whether it is new deal or extension.

That keeps the talent approx the same while lowering the cap pressure slightly.

But again, we don't have that option with Richards.
We use him (and lose other assets we can't afford under the cap)
or we trade him
or we lose him via buyout

Depending upon the return, I would consider option 2.
Getzlaf - as UFA next season -- could be good for us.
Who knows what we would have to add?

True dat

But it is possible

2013/2014 NEW YORK RANGERS

Brandon Mashinter or UFA ($0.550m) / J.T. Miller ($1.244m) / Arron Asham ($1.000m)
Micheal Haley ($0.600m)
Forwards cap hit = $38.711m

Michael Del Zotto ($2.550m) / Dylan McIlrath ($1.295m)
Stu Bickel ($0.750m)
Defensemens cap hit = $17.895m

GOALTENDERS
Henrik Lundqvist ($6.875m)
Martin Biron ($1.300m)
Goaltenders cap hit = $8.175m
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS
(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000
CAP PAYROLL: $66,247,500
CAP HIT: $64,380,833
BONUSES (deferrable): $887,500
CAP SPACE (22-man roster):$406,667

Some "fat" needs to be trimmed to get under the cap
So I would try to replace Mike Rupp. Pending the outcome of this years results. Either through trade or waivers. Using a compliance buyout here is not possible - as only 1 year remains (I believe).
Contracts like Pyatt, Asham, Boyle :amazed: and Stralman would be the other usual suspects here.
Guys like Lindberg, Fast, Kolarik, Hrivik and Newbury would be potential replacement names from within the organization with a lower price tag eventually replacing the above. We really have nobody else on D IMO that can step up now. Which is an organizational weakness.
Replacing/omitting someone like Haley or Biron might be options too, although the former creates no actual cap space.
Somebody will have to go though. To be cap compliable.
Our two 1st round picks on The Whale in Miller & McIlraith replace pending UFAs Halpern & Eminger. This adds to cap a little though, but is going to be hard to get around.

This is also presuming that the key RFA contract numbers wind up something like this:

  • McD (2014) $4,300m @ 5 years
  • Stepan (2014) $2,500m @ 2 years
  • Hagelin (2014) $2,000m @ 2 years
  • Sauer (2014) retires:(

Which they should...
So with small roster tweaking it should fit!

that roster is realistic and I think one they would want. Its going to be penny pinching but McIlrath may not be ready yet so they could save 500 K or so on another Gilroy, Eminger type.

I think Haley must be the spare since he's on a one way deal and if not its a few hundred K wasted which they cant really have.

Miller could make the team for sure but he would likely get 3rd line minutes. I would think Pyatt would be dealt for a guy making 500 K less to play in the 4th line instead of Mashinter who you have there now. Again penny pinching.

I think Lindberg is going to replace Halpern as the 4th line C

Rupp has to go next yr since you cant have a 4th liner making that much. He is likely tradeable to a cap floor team looking for leadership

So my lineup is very close and RFA numbers look right on Hagelin ,McD, Stepan. They may want more but will likely get around that money

Nash, Richards, Callahan
Kreider, Stepan, Gaborik
Hagelin, Boyle, Miller
cheaper play for Pyatt, Lindberg, Asham
Haley

McDonaugh, Girardi
Staal, Stralman
Del Zotto, Bickel
cheap spare

Lundqvist, Biron

Like you said, it is quite uncertain on the bottom D pairing plus the bottom 6. There is a lot of time that will change things the next 9 months until Training Camp begins for next year. Hopefully with a parade down Broadway as a peak!

The main point I was trying to make is that we realistically CAN retain our solid core & also resign our 3 key RFAs - then basically recruiting and tweaking all the minor roster changes from within the organization. Which is great! Or so it presently appears. It will be a very tight fit though... Glen consistently hardballing the RFAs up for their 2nd bridge-gap contracts is very beneficial here, but IMO that is not going to fly with McD. He will get a longer, Staal type deal. Also if Stepan and/or Hagelin have a great year - this all gets shot to Hades as well...

I think if we resign the important guys we can have a better roster next year. Especially if Sauer comes back. If not, maybe McIlrath will be ready by then. Miller too. Right now we have some holes at the bottom of our lineup.

In a strange way, the lockout can help us here.

I mean, think about it - what is a "great" year for one of these guys? Let's say Hags really steps up his play to the point where he would've scored 30 goals in a regular 82 game season. That translates to what, 17-18 goals, this year? A single hot or cold streak can have a dramatic impact on the full year extrapolation.

That small sample size is going to make it really hard to argue for either Steps or Hags to get a significant increase over what you're projecting. Play well, get something between Dubi/AA money and DZ money this summer and then play for a bigger deal in 2015.

It's my understanding Getzlaf is UFA after this season.
Swapping him for Richards effectively creates long term flexibility.

That just makes zero sense.

Get rid of Richards' 7 remaining years and basically give it to Getzlaf = long term flexibility? What?

Richards isn't going anywhere.

The best scenario for next season is that Miller and Linberg add some skill, face offs, and PK to the bottom six, and Fasth can become the x-factor scorer and end up playing with the top two lines. He has the skill and speed, he just needs to stay healthy.

If those three can crack the lineup and they can add an Iginla or Morrow for a one-two year cheaper than they make now deal, they're gold for a longtime.

Once again, Fasth is the total x-factor in everything.

yea it is going to be interesting but I agree and most should that it would be tight but it is doable. They can keep King, big 3 F. Like you said they look to trim with the Stralman, Rupp, Pyatts of the world. For some reason I think Boyle sticks

It gives a chance for kids like Miller, Fast, Lindberg to make the team out of camp since they have smaller contracts

IF they get absolutely blow away for Gaborik you kinda have to entertain that though. And I mean blown away.
