kenjets- Kick some arse!

Ok, against the background of 4. and (i) above, its not easy at all to find potential scenarios out there. Yakupov is of course one option that fits the mold, but he is a former 1st round pick and MDZ is still probably to little to get him.

But we have more or less only looked at younger options. With the cap scenario, teams want to hang on to them.

Could a vet on a "bad" contract be an option (RB run for your losec!) -- with the team getting MDZ taking on money?

I mean, if we start at looking at vets with "bad contracts", that would make sense for us contracts aside, I think we will find alot more interesting names that teams might be willing to move. Looking at the teams in this league from A-Ö, here are some randon names just to name a few.

Bad contracts that would look better if a couple of million is taken back
Tyler Myers (6 x 5.5m)
Christian Erhoff (8 x 4m)
Alex Semin (5 x 7m)
Jeff Skinner (6 x 5.75m)
Nathan Horton (7 x 5.3m)
James Wisniewski (4 x 5.5m)
Johan Franzen (7 x 3.9m)
Ryane Clowe (5 x 4.85m) [jokle]
Vincent Lecavalier (5 x 4.5m)
Mark Streit (4 x 5.2m)
Brent Burns (4 x 5.7m)

Example 1
I mean take Tyler Myers for example. The kid is barely playing solid top 6 hockey right now, he is paid 5.5m per and is in a real negative situation. Buffalo is ridding themselves of misstakes made. Who in their right mind would take him -- with that contract?

OTOH, you got a 6'8 really young RIGHT defensemen. With a heavy shot. Decent first pass. Tremendous reach. Some toughness. He got a 48 pts season in the NHL under his belth.

If Buffalo took on like 25-30% of his contracta, up to 2m per, you get that D for 3.5m per locked up for 6 years. That would definitely put him in another light. The contracts signed out there are really nutty right now, and it seems like the going price for a top 4 D is creeping up towards 4-5m per. We could pay a top 4 D 3.5m per in 2019, I just imagine that could be tremendously valuble. And I definitely think Myers really could use a change of scenary and become a very solid top 4 D (while maybe not a Norris candidate like he was hyped).

Buffalo are rebuilding for sure. Would they be interested in like Michael Del Zotto, Kristo, Skjei and a 2nd round pick package for Tyler Myers and 30% of the contract? Would anyone do MDZ and Miller for Myers and 30% of contract?

Example 2
Detroit just needs to rebuild. They won't make a trade now, but they could be on the outside looking in in a couple of months.

Johan Franzen is on a nuts contract. Del Zotto would help them for sure. We wouldn't face cap-recapturing issues with Franzen due to Burke...

Would they be interested in making Franzen extremely attractive from a cap point of view by taking back say a mil of his 3.9m cap hit and getting Del Zotto and handful of young depth in return?

Like Franzen and 25% of contract (giving him a cap hit of 3m per) for Del Zotto, Oscar Lindberg, Kristo, Skjei and a 3rd rounder? We get our big PF for 4-5 years. We get PO experience and a proven winner. A LW that really could give Nash a board presence. Etc. Detroit jump starts their rebuilding process. They only take back 1m per year.

Bottom line, the proposed thinking is of course far fetched. But many of these guys on horrible contracts get alot more attractive if you take away a couple of millions of their cap hit. They go from players you wouldn't touch with a pole to actually becoming quite interesting.

I applaud your initiative on Myers.

But hell no for that kind of price. again, this is your quote:

While we could consider Myers on the right terms, I would much prefer Ristolainen, even if he is WAY more expensive. Would be willing to reasonably overpay for. If they are rebuilding, logically is there is a point at which they keep a huge building block and another at which they invest that block in two or three really solid smaller blocks.

What about:
Stepan + MDZ + Rangers 2014 and 2105 1sts + cap dump
for
Ristolainen + Myers AND Sabres 2014 1st?

all this defensemen talk... i miss having Michael Sauer in our lineup :( he'd make either Moore or MDZ look like a consistent and solid player.

Abdelkader, Smith, Tatar and to Rangers for Del Zotto and Pouliot??

Thanks, you made me throw up. What in the world kind of trade is this????? Who takes Stepans spot? How do we refill the prospect pool withour our 1sts. Why do we trade 2 1sts?

If the right deal is not there then they shouldn't do it.
I agree with you.
We just don't often agree on what is the right deal.

Bernmeister doesn't run the rangers.
I keep saying the universe doesn't revolve around me, we should be looking at merits of an argument based on facts, and truth and...
oh, by the way, here's what I think about what YOU think about the universe revolving around me ....:amazed::naughty::D:laugh::laugh::yo:

We don't just make deals for the sake of making them. ...
I rarely support 'shakeup deals'.
There is a clear method to what some would call my madness --- increase total talent in both concentration of quality per player and number of players by dealing higher assets for good risk assets with nice upside.

So please don't put your words in my mouth, especially if they are NOT accurate.
Thank you.

Thanks, you made me throw up.
Sorry, but that's all on you.

What in the world kind of trade is this?????
The kind that was arguably an improvement over the one that overpaid for Myers.

More importantly, it nets a guy we badly need and could use now on RD, a guy who was like 8th overall in the last draft.
And, yes, while we pay dearly, we also get their first pick THIS year as well.

Who takes Stepans spot?
Plenty of Cs.
Brassard. Richards. Dom Moore

Miller to go with Kreider = super speed
Lindberg, an all Swede line w/Hags + Fast

Still have Boyle, Haley, Yogan

How do we refill the prospect pool withour our 1sts. Why do we trade 2 1sts?
Price paid to get their 1st this year.
Even if they balk and want to do it next year, it's STILL good.

Risto was a top10 pick. Worth it.
And Myers, ? and salary, but a better investment than throwing $$ at Pyatt and Pouilott, etc.
So we scratch Sabes back a little to get what we want.

Big picture, man.

Off to check out the game later. Til tom.

I was looking at Myers too but his contract status definitely made that a short lived thought. I only recently learned that teams can take up some of a traded player's contract :amazed: so that definitely makes taking him on more doable but the package you proposed is way too much. Myers is not playing well and if you use your logic, Del Zotto has a 41 point season under his belt.

so is 30% of Myers contract (i.e. $1.65M of cap space) worth Kristo, Skjei, and a 2nd? heeeeeeell no! is it worth Miller? heeeeeell no! Maybe a 2nd. ok, so is Myers worth MDZ straight up? debatable but I'm erring on the side of Myers > MDZ. Is Myers worth more to the Sabres on their roster eating up $5.5M (i.e. how desperate is Buffalo to move him?)

Wisniewski is worth considering. Erhoff especially (although I'm unfamiliar with the current state of his game so judgement withheld...) Brent Burns has moved to forward in SJ and is doing really well so SJ will not look to move him. (he's injured right now). Horton hasn't played this season. No thanks to Clowe, even at 1/2 cap. Doubt Franzen is moved... I actually think Franzen has a great cap deal/value.

In most of these cases, I think the other team doesn't take on some of that player's salary cap but takes back players to even it out, so for example Ehrhoff at $4M <-> MDZ at $2.55M + Pyatt $1.55M (example! not suggesting) actually puts us ahead in the cap game! Now if Sather can swindle Buffalo to take X% of the cap hit on Ehrhoff for say a prospect or draft pick, that'd just be bonus cap ;)

No, makes no sense at all. HUGE overpayment for an overrated Dman.

Brassars, Richard and Moore cant replace Stepan. Are you crazy dude? Youre kidding right?

Risto is unknown, and you wanna trade picks and players for him? Unbelievable.
These trades make the team worse. Stepan is a big piece of the core we have, you trade him and you tear it all apart.I suggest we keep our 1st rounders. Lets refill the prospect pool, that way we dont need to make crazy trades like you suggest. If you think these trades improve the team now or in the future then you are mistaken.

Looking at Dallas' roster tonight leads me to believe that we could do a deal with them for DZ, especially if they fall out of playoff contention. Some interesting pieces:

Older but valuable:

Peverley: Would allow us to move Richards to wing, where he's looked better this season. 3.25 cap hit for this year and next is super manageable. We'd have Stepan, Brassard, and Peverley for our first 3 Cs.
Robidas: Yeah, he's old but he's UFA after this year and should be relatively cheap. RH d-man and still logs 2nd pairing minutes. Still plays at a high level. 3.3 cap hit.
Trevor Daley: LHD at 3.3 cap hit but plays on right side. Signed through 2016-2017. Pretty good player that seemingly could be had.

Young but possibly valuable to Stars:

Alex Chiasson: Power forward on his ELC. 23 years old. 5 goals, 12 points total this season. Seems like the type of player they'd want to keep but if you consider Benn, and Seguin untouchable, he's more likely to be had.
Cody Eakin: Plays center, 22 years old, and on his ELC. It would seem to me that he would be difficult to acquire since he's a pretty good player all around. I consider Benn, Seguin, and Nichushkin pretty untouchable.
Antoine Roussel: Middleweight fighter, active on the ice looking to hit. Not a scorer at this point but would probably be liked by those who want a fighter. 0.612 cap hit, RFA after this season. 24 years old.

Throw ins:

Vernon Fiddler: Wins faceoffs. 1.8 cap hit UFA. Can kill penalties.
Ryan Garbutt: Nothing special here. Can play on the PK. 4th liner. 0.575 UFA. Does lay the body.

You could probably work together a package but I'm not sure what they'd be willing to give. They also have a really good system (ranked 4th on HF) but I'm only familiar with Rangers prospects.

I'd like to get a RHD (or at least someone who plays on the right) and/or a top 3 line Center if we were to trade Del Zotto. Wing is a lesser priority since, like I said earlier, you could easily move Richards there.

Could we get Eakin, Daley, and Fiddler for MDZ, Boyle, and Miller? Would it be worth it for both teams?

That trade is horrible

How is Cody Eakin spare parts? Every time he's brought up people just seems to act like he's not worth anything. I don't get it.

Yeah, I was under the assumption he's pretty valuable when proposing that trade. He's young and already good for 40+ points a season. If we had Stepan, Eakin, and Brassard for our top 3 centers, that'd be pretty good and with a bunch of talented wingers around them.

I would love a deal centered around Mika Zibanejad and Michael Del Zotto as the primary pieces. Add picks/players; whatever makes sense.
