I would have taken a shot on Myers if Torts was still he coach with his track record with developing defenders, but with AV in, not sure I roll the dice on that contract. He would be the highest paid defender on the team and that could definitely cause some unrest in the locker room, especially with extensions for Girardi, Stralman and Staal on the horizon.

I would look to do Del Zotto for Brendan Smith and a prospect. I think Detroit might be receptive to that as well.

Still unsure if I would go for Simmonds.

Do we even know that the Flyers are shopping Simmonds? He always seemed like Ed Snider's favorite.

In my opinion, many here way undervalue a young puck moving defense man who is not a bad defender. Simmonds is being overrated because he brings grit when motivated. The guy is invisible most nights. I watch nearly every Flyers game. The Flyers are willing to move him for a reason. We could use his grit, but not for MDZ, WHO SHOULD MATURE.....someday.

Nah, the reality isn't about DZ as a specific player. It's about him being out of place on our blue line.

An interesting idea. They'd be giving us the 1st round for taking Myers off their hands.

Of course, then we'd be stuck with Myers' contract worth as much or more than we want to pay Girardi. Myers is a big risk. Is he just stuck in a rut in Buffalo or is he really as bad as he seems? It's not as if he's a fresh faced rookie. He's 23.

I'd be surprised if Myers was traded. The talent is there and it's hard to give up on that kind of package. Plus they've already paid a significant portion of his contract once this season is up.

If he was available, I think I'd risk it.

how about Del Zotto and Asham (throw in) to Wings for Smith, Abdelkader, Martin Frk and 2ed 2014??

Smith, Frk and a pick is what I had in mind. Unless you can get Jurco.

Smith replaces Del Zotto on third pairing, and is actually a RHD. Smith also has some upside and maybe playing with McDonagh again wakes him up.

Jurco has top six upside and can play either wing, Frk has top six upside too, and is a big threat as PPQB on the right hand side, so AV would definitely get use out of him.

You replace Del Zotto with Smith to keep the teams defensive depth and Smith isn't an RFA until next offseason. Not to mention you get a nice forward prospect to boot. That is probably a fair trade too all things considered.

Abdelkader can upgrade the Rangers 3rd and 4th line.. he would be a good fit here. brings size and some speed and grit to the lineup.

Er, what? Smith is a lefty and barely played with McDonagh at Wisconsin. They played on different pairings.

Smith looks absolutely lost in the NHL. No thanks.

If you trade for Myers, both Staal as Girardi are going to want more than 5.5 cap hit per year. Not to mention the superior to Myers in every way Ryan McDonagh just signed long term for 4.7 cap hit per season. I would not like to make our best defenseman disgruntled, and annihilate our cap structure in one fell swoop on a major risk.

yeah why would we trade a 23 year old 2nd pairing dman for a struggling 6th dman whos older than mdz, a bottom 6 forward, a 2nd rounder, and frk who is playing in the echl...

Smith plays RHD for Detroit, and I did not say he would have to play with McDonagh, but maybe McD can help him find his game. Smith also makes barely over a million so it's not a huge monetary risk either.

You improve the team's depth by getting players that fit the right roles for the team. Del Zotto's value isn't exactly very high right now either, and if he is healthy scratched again it is going to torpedo. What exactly do you think you can get for Del Zotto at this time realistically?

His value is higher than you think. I think you can get a top 6 forward for Del Zotto

Not sure how a 6th dman, a prospect, and a 2nd round pick improves anything on this team.

a lot more than a bottom 6 forward with no upside beyond that and a worse defenseman.

Again, what do you think Del Zotto could realistically return at this stage? Smith has upside and plays on the right side, and the Rangers prospect pool needs a Top six finisher in the system.

What? Does bringing Myers onto the Rangers suddenly makes Staal and Girardi realize there are higher paid defensemen in the NHL? Why is McDonagh going to suddenly be disgruntled because Myers is here? Does Myers only make more money than McDonagh if he's on the Rangers?

If you trade for Myers, it's a foregone conclusion that Girardi is signing a cap friendly deal, or he's not part of the long-term plan.

He's also terrible and has never shown any indication that he can be a reliable top-4 defender in the NHL.

What they dont need is a 6th dman who plays on the right. They need someone who can take major RD minutes right now if they move MDZ.
