If that Simmonds for MDZ trade were offered today, I'd be a little hesitant even though I'm interested. MDZ offers nearly as many points from the D-spot as Simmonds offers as a forward. He's also a couple of years older and, unlike some people on this board, I think MDZ has a chance to really blossom into a great offensive defender. I'm kind of tempted since I think McIlrath is ready (as many points this season already as all of last year in the AHL in less than a third of games). I also really like Simmonds but something is just telling me that we can get more from DZ.

Either way, I'm not sure it's even worth discussing because I doubt Philly would trade to us and we really aren't in need of another forward. I think a DZ deal would only make sense if he were part of a bigger deal with more moving parts (unless we can land a star with him, which is doubtful).

The Rangers sniffed around to gauge interest in left wing Chris Kreider, but he won’t be going anywhere. He has 2-5-7 points in nine games and is a candidate for the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year.

Three weeks ago,Garrioch wrote the Rangers were trying to trade Kreider. Now the Rangers are keeping him. The Rangers need more guys like Kreider. AV really likes him. He is player always willing to learn and ask questions. Sam Rosen interviewed Arniel a few games ago. Arniel said Kreider is always asking him questions and looking at video with him. You can teach Kreider.

Kevin Allen on his top 10 free agents

1. Goalie Henrik Lundqvist (New York Rangers): Can you imagine the bidding war that would ensue if Lundqvist tested the market? Better yet, can you imagine the New York Post headlines if the Rangers lost him to the New York Islanders or Philadelphia Flyers? It would be high drama indeed, but it won't happen. The Rangers will get him signed because he is as important to the franchise as Sidney Crosby is to the Pittsburgh Penguins. It seems as if Lundqvist, the league's top goalie, was born to play in New York. Prediction: Will re-sign.

5. Winger Ryan Callahan (Rangers): Much like the Lundqvist situation, it is difficult to understand why the Rangers haven't tied up Callahan before now. He offers grit, goals, guile and leadership. He's the Rangers' captain, and he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would want to leave a team before it made a strong run to win a Stanley Cup. Prediction: Will re-sign.

Girardi wasn't listed in the top 10

Lundqvist and Callahan aren't leaving. How much does Girardi want?

Fair point on Moore. Let's say the Rangers trade MDZ for a forward. Come July 1 they presumably have McD, Staal, Moore (qualified) and Falk (qualified). Do they get into a bidding war for Girardi and Stralman? Will McIlrath, Allen and/or Johnson be cheaper, capable options? I have to think that if MDZ is traded it is with the plan to extend at least one of Girardi/Stralman. So why not do that first, instead of getting caught with their pants down this summer.

The Rangers need to figure out their backend. Besides McDonagh, all of their D are up for contracts within the next 19 months. These are discussions for Sather and Gorton.

Craig Custance reported in June/July about DZ being available. Katie Strang said during an ESPN chat the Rangers would move DZ. Garrioch wrote DZ was available last week. Then Brooks wrote it.

Here’s one for you: After scoring three power play goals in his first nine NHL games, Del Zotto has scored four more in his next 255 games. His last power play goal came on March 30, 2012, the only one he has scored in the last three seasons. He has been on the ice for three of the Blueshirts’ 10 power play goals this year, now operating at the right point of the second unit across from Moore.

I knew it bad but didn't realize it was that bad.

That is really really bad. MDZ hasn't improved his game much since joining the league. I'd say he's 6th dman on the roster today. Could be top 4 on a weaker team. Could use a change of scenario and think that'll be the case this season.

I think at the trade deadline this year.. DZ will be traded for sure.. also with McIrath most likely ready for next year, DZ is expandable..

we're either getting an older (26-28) top 6 fwd on contract or a young fwd with a ton of upside..

I see an ROR or Stasny

Are the Oilers going to pop again tonight?

The Oilers brass was scouting a college hockey game in Boston on Friday. The team played in Philly yesterday and are in Chicago tonight. Lowe and MacTavish have been on the road scouting and Messier comes along for the ride when they are at the Garden.

The Rangers brass should be pissed at Messier. He attended the off-season meetings in California and then bolted when he didn't get the coaching job. Later Messier pops up with Edmonton brass at 2 Rangers games last week. He an intimate knowledge of every player in the organization.

Sather bypassed him and hired Alain Vigneault. The decision undoubtedly stung Messier, who resigned from the Rangers shortly after — specifying the coaching decision wasn’t the reason — and became the face of the Kingsbridge project. He still refuses to open up about any hurt Sather’s decision may have caused.

“I’ve made my point on a number of occasions: There’s nothing else for me to say,†Messier said. “In reality, I bear no hard feelings. I understand the process and making those tough decisions. This opportunity presented itself to restore a building in the Bronx and restore the future of the kids and help in an economic way.â€

An official NHL partnership with Kingsbridge is inevitable, not only because the league is based in New York but because Messier is still working in hockey. He confirmed he is officially on board as a special adviser for the Edmonton Oilers, the franchise where he built his playing legacy — with Sather as coach and GM — before leading the Rangers to glory.

“I’m always going to have some affiliation with the NHL,†said Messier, who attended two Rangers home games this week with Oilers brass, though he brushes off talk of trade interest. “It’s a great fit. I can be another set of eyes on the East Coast.â€

Messier could have stayed in his previous position with the Rangers. He didn't do much. Messier isn't doing much for Edmonton. He watches a few games.

Stastny will be a group III in the summer. ROR is playing left wing on their top line with Duchene. ROR can't be traded until February 28 but he seems to be part of the plan with Sakic and Roy in charge.

Yeah but if he's not the go-to defenseman on offense, his value to the Rangers is lower. McDonagh is doing what should have been DZ's job.

Pretty much. McDonagh is becoming the go to offensive d-man on the Rangers. What's more he looks better at it than MDZ ever has.

For next year anyway there is McDonagh, Staal (one more year) and Moore not going anywhere--which takes care of the left side. How McIlrath pans out this year--whether he can secure a spot on the right side might figure in to the calculations. Kevin Allen's list of top free agents is very heavy on the forwards. Good defensemen are always premium pickups. I really think the Rangers are going to need Girardi back and probably Stralman as well. Another reason why Richards gets bought out.

Del Zotto is the moveable one and if the Rangers could get back Wayne Simmonds I'm all for it. The Rangers do not have a tough top 6 capable forward even close to him. He's a good player. I would like that--one caveat however I'm not sure what Simmonds cap hit is--that could make a difference.

Provided the Sabres move Ehrhoff, I'd be interested to see if they're interested in a DZ for one of their young righty D in a package. Obviously, Myers is a huge, huge risk. But they also have Pysyk and Ristolainen in there. Pysyk would be the obvious target, since Ristolainen is more highly touted, I think.

I don't see the Sabres moving either of those two for MDZ. Not saying MDZ couldn't fetch Pysyk value wise, just don't see them doing it.

Nobody ever sees teams moving any of their prospects/young players until they do.

DZ+mid pick for Pysyk and Foligno is a close match, value wise. Would be similar to Goligoski for Neal and Niskanen, except it wouldn't be robbery on the part of the team receiving two players.

How about something like MDZ for Myers and the Isles' #1?

An interesting idea. They'd be giving us the 1st round for taking Myers off their hands.

Of course, then we'd be stuck with Myers' contract worth as much or more than we want to pay Girardi. Myers is a big risk. Is he just stuck in a rut in Buffalo or is he really as bad as he seems? It's not as if he's a fresh faced rookie. He's 23.

How long is Myers' deal for? You would think Myers would benefit no longer having the burden of being the top dog in Buffalo.

Locking up Stralman is definitely be something we should do, if he keeps playing like he has this year. He has the best Fenwick% on our team by a considerable margin at 5-on-5 play and is our only D-Man with a positive +/- at 5v5. Considering that he only shoots an average amount himself, that's a reflection on how effective he's been in Vigneault's system. I thought he was sloppy last year but he was never exactly the gritty type of defenseman Torts gets the best of. Even then the stats looked good in his favor. I think he's a quality top 4 D-Man that should probably be signed for around value.

Even though Girardi has been way better recently than he started, I still have a gut feeling that signing him longer term is a risky move. That might just be because he's the "old guy" on a young d corps.

his offensive game hasnt improved much, but hes a significantly better defenseman.

In my opinion, many here way undervalue a young puck moving defense man who is not a bad defender. Simmonds is being overrated because he brings grit when motivated. The guy is invisible most nights. I watch nearly every Flyers game. The Flyers are willing to move him for a reason. We could use his grit, but not for MDZ, WHO SHOULD MATURE.....someday.

Defensively he's still the worst of our 6 regulars. He shouldn't be on the right side in any case but we have a glut on the left. He's an RFA at the end of this season. He's making $2,550 mil currently. He hasn't really improved much--considering the strength of his game is his offensive ability and he has 2 assists and has not established himself in the NHL as a pwp qb. At best if he were to stay with the Rangers IMO he hasn't earned more than a qualifying offer for his next contract and anything more than $3 mil per would be overpayment considering that's where some people put Stralman who is a much more important player for us. The question is not just about DZ's next contract but also Girardi's next contract or Staal's or Stralman's--but all 3 of those players have proven more important to the team.

In what way do you expect him to mature?--to be better defensively?--he's okay when he's on the left but he's hardly going to become a shutdown guy. Offensively there's been little if any improvement from his rookie season. That doesn't look like it's going to change. Defenses have figured him out. That he's not a threat on the pwp to put the puck in the net. They can cheat with him.

Its not like Simmonds is much older, hes a little less than 2 years older than MDZ.

I would love to see the rangers add someone else who can play in front of the net.

Value wise, I would think Simmonds is a bit more valuable than MDZ. Though the flyers are pretty desperate for anyone on D.
