But let be clear about one thing. Teams are almost never or never screwed by players that get injury problems. I think it makes sense to point that out. It's a lot worse to overpay for someone healthy than to sign someone that breaks down.

You're assuming that Clowe's injuries will at some point keep him out of the lineup permanently. Maybe he plays 40 games a year for the next 4 years and continues his poor production when he is healthy.

Starting to think Stralman gets resigned . Girardi dealt if they can find a good young rd coming back . He's likely too rich as a ufa so they should make a move

I think Girardi resigns..soon for about 4M per. He is better than he gets credit for and at $4M would be a solid signing. I would like to see him be a Ranger for life; just a solid player. All D-men make mistakes that lead to goals; let's not forget that.

Girardi can probably get almost $6M per on the open market. Im under no illusion that Girardi or Callahan are going to be giving hometown discounts.

More importantly, Im not under the illusion that these are the guys to be giving retirement contracts to.

If that is what it would take for Girardi to re-sign, he would already be re-signed. The actual number will be somewhere between 5 and 6 mil per year and probably for 6 or more years.

He'll continue to be here if the asking price is a top 4 defenseman for somebody who is not a top 4 defenseman.

I don't think that is the price though.

Agreed. I am hoping Sather sees this as an opportunity to retool the roster.

Kreider also bunched up and down between the NHL and AHL for a year or so before he sticked. It's not fair to count on a rookie who yet haven't played a single game in the NHL to be an impact player.

The argument last year was that he would never amount to a confident NHL player with the constant call ups and send downs. Kristo has been left unabated to learn and develop at his own pace in Hartford. Now its unfair to count on someone who has never played in the NHL before?

Yup. With Girardi being 30 and Callahan being 29 by the time their current contract expires, 5-7 year contracts could very likely take them to retirement. Callahan is already showing signs of breaking down, and once Girardi starts losing what little footspeed he currently has, it's not going to be pretty.

Both Girardi and Callahan have been great Rangers, but this is probably going to be their last big contract. I highly doubt they take a hometown discount, and I really don't begrudge them trying to milk every cent out of their next contract. I just hope we're not the ones giving it to them.

Of course, there's always a chance that we're wrong about them, and they are willing to take a discount, but I would think they would have been signed already if that was the case. Seeing Lundqvist get that monster contract probably didn't help things.

I'm pretty high on Kristo, but I would temper your expectations. Even in the AHL, he's a turnover machine, that's why he hasn't gotten a cup of coffee yet.

He needs to get better defensively and learn to diminish his offensive turnovers, then he will be ready.

I have all the confidence in the world that he will eventually be ready to take on a 2nd or 3rd line role in the NHL, but having a large impact next year may be rushing it a little bit.

Turnovers are a problem but the skill is undeniable. He has another half a season to limit mistakes. He's not going to get rid of them completely. But hell... a lot of our current NHL players are turn over machines. Richards and Brassard commit turn overs on a game to game basis.

The entire board wanted Kreider to stay on the 3rd line because he wasn't defensively responsible and was also a turnover machine. This team lacks goal scorers. Kristo puts the puck in the back of the net. If he even becomes remotely responsible with the puck he'll be an upgrade on our top 6. I'm not expecting him to come in this year and save the team... I do however expect him to get a cup of coffee by the end of the year. I do expect him to earn and solidify a top 6 spot on the team next year and put up a 25/30-25/30 season. I don't think that's out of the picture for him at all.

I believe so yes. It's good that the management keeping him in the A so he can work on his game and prepare for the big league but it still a big difference in quality. When he gets his chance (this or next season) isn't for the good to count on him to be one of the clubs top producer like Kreider is for us this year.

Girardi and Callahan will get major bucks and the max term as free agents. This is their last major contract. Girardi will be 30. Callahan will be 29. Callahan told Brooks about playing out the year and dealing with the contract in the summer. I heard Kyper say Girardi will be doing the same thing. Go the distance. Scotty Morrison added Girardi is a $6M player. The talks with Girardi aren't very good. You can't blame Girardi and Callahan because most of us would do the same thing. The Rangers shouldn't play that game. Claude Loiselle of the Leafs front office was on the 3rd episode of 24/7 discussing the Phaneuf contract. He said every player wants a raise with the cap going up.

If you're Sather, you simply can't go into an offseason thats contingent upon losing or winning a bidding war for Callahan and Girardi.

The decision regarding if they will be Rangers next season should be made already. Assessing things in the summer and having them possibly walk for nothing (or massively overpaying them) is a real **** way to run an organization.

He's a cheap and sort of useful 13th forward, definitely cheaper than Pyatt.

Penguins claim Taylor Pyatt off waivers. Rangers traveling to Pittsburgh today. Pyatt did not skate with Rangers in Coral Gabols this a.m.

Incoming Pyatt hattrick tomorrow :shakehead

I expect both to take their kick at the can. Here is the problem with a max contract for those 2: If/when Girardi loses a step, he will be a liability. Callahan cannot continue playing his crash bang game without getting worn out. When he doesn't play that way, his value diminishes. We run the risk of being saddled with 2 huge contracts with guys who can no longer get it done.
