What would you pick in round 1?

Anybody that fits my teams needs best. But you also must consider who's available. For example in 2010, I did like Tarasenko and would've liked if we drafted him, but I wanted Burmistrov until he was taken by Atlanta. Because we needed a good center. I wasn't a huge fan of the McI pick at first, but I understood why we made it and agree with it.

In this draft I'd take the best center available. Because that's a pressing need.

But I wouldn't at all be opposed to taking an OFD or a big winger, cause those are also needs.

I pick the forward every day. Scoring is needed all the time. Dmen are nice but not when the problem hasnt been defense

For this draft, I agree.

OFD is still a need though, so if there's like a can't miss OFD pick I take it.

I don't believe we should take defensive dmen in the first round because those kinds of players can be found in the later rounds and are cheaper to obtain in free agency. Offensive minded forwards are expensive and generally are past their prime by the time they become available.

That's great and all, but it in no way addresses my point or puts any "myth to bed". First of all, nowhere did I say to acquire height and weight for the same of acquiring height and weight. Your analysis essentially assumes that Andrej Sustr has more of an impact than Dustin Brown.

It's not about pure height or weight. It is about having a team that can dictate terms to the opposition. That can win loose pucks. That can hold pucks by using their reach. That can win the playoff battle of attrition by actually hitting someone. That can take a hit to make a play. That will score a dirty goal. That is what this roster is sorely lacking. Again I really like MZA. But when he is the most consistent player for doing those things your roster is ****ed and especially ****ed in the playoffs.

Bag humbug. ;)

Yeah, well, if you're saying that we should acquire a bigger and equally talented MZA for MZA then that doesn't hold a whole lot of water either. I'm saying that I take the more talented small guy over the the less talented big guy (Pyatt, Puliot, Boyle, etc... we've got plenty) any day of the week. MZA is the guy that's digging in the boards, battling for pucks, scoring, passing and has been our best forward and he's got heart. We need MORE of that around here, not less, and especially not for the sake of size.

That's what I'm saying. I don't trade MZA. We need more guys with his battle level. Not less. And I think we agree on that.

Draft to fit your needs. Again.

I'm sure the Oilers would love an elite defensive d-man with their 1st this year. Cause they desperately need one.

They can trade one of their offensive forwards for one

I'd agree with you, but it's pretty well known that he and AV don't see eye-to-eye on things, and AV isn't happy with him. He also holds better value (better, not great) than our other Dmen.

He's going, whether or not we like the return.

Next to McD, he's been the best defenseman on the ice in transition and offense. I'm not a fan of moving DZ anymore. Not with Staal's struggles, and Girardi's probable departure. DZ's been very good in his natural side, and space is opening up there.

I see so many of the "get us a shiny new toy" people here are the same ones that have do heavily soured on DZ. No matter who's in the lineup, they want change. They never root for an imperfect team to become special, they want their own perfect vision of scream on Garden ice every night. I'm a fan of the current line up, in that I'd rather see them become something special than any players brought in to further mercenary the team. If mgmt brings in different players I root the same for them. It's just obnoxious always hating half the team you root for.

There is only 1 way to draft that is effective in the NHL and MLB. Same techniques shouldn't be used for NFL and NBA.

1) Draft the best available player regardless of their position.
2) If you have the luxury of choosing between sure-fire prospects you can then move on to best suited need. Only then.

Then you deal from strengths to get the positions you need.

Amen, couldn't agree more.

The same crowd that hates Nash because he isn't Lebron James (or as dominating as any of the top 25 NBA players are for their teams) think Evander Kane is a pipe dream and would definitely expect a Evander Kane or Taylor Hall to work wonders for us.

Nothing would change with an Evander Kane instead or Nash. Nash is more talented than E Kane. I would like to see E Kane perform coming off an injury, while he has some confidence issues and while playing on a struggling line and team. Didn't AO only score like one PPG for 42 goals, people said he was done than he won the Hart a quarter later.

Be patient, for once.

If the Rangers could draft a d-man with their 1st who had good size, wheels and could run a pwp I'd be all for that. Rangers have lacked a legit pwp qb pretty much since Brian Leetch. Leetch was not that big--neither is Erik Karlsson but they're top of the charts talents. Rangers need a legit threat from the blueline. Del Zotto's not it and Moore's not likely to be it either.

It's funny... that before the season started I would have thought that MDZ was far more likely to be traded than Girardi. Now a few months later and the world has changed (through my eyes). The team needs offensive help. Girardi can prove to be the shut down defender who can help a team win today . Given, the prospects for the Rangers short term future is that what the team needs? MDZ seems to have played himself into a position that will make him difficult to trade. Does any GM really want him? Except if his price tag drops low enough? What about losing both Girardi and MDZ? With Staal's health questionable can the team really trade the pair?

Given Giradi's contract/ age / potential return he might be the better prospect to deal.

How about a starting D (if both Girardi and MDZ are traded) of: Without Staal...

Mcd + Stral

Moore + Falk

2 Wolfpack D's?

Maybe 1 d comes back in a trade but....?

Right now there seems to be too many questions regarding the back line for both to go.

Thoughts?

I never buy into these stupid rumors, can't stand them really, but I saw out on the main boards a mention of McQuaid out of Boston. I'd like to see him in a Ranger sweater.

Rangers have traded less than a handful of times with Boston in the last twenty years, and none of those players were worth mentioning.

He has a killer shot... Beyond that, he is nothing close to $7-8m a year

I've seen a lot of Weber lately. He is not anything that special in most areas of his game. Defense, skating, passing etc. Can actually be exposed defensively.

There are a few extreme athletes in this league, Sid, AO, Malkin, Doughty. Someone like P Kane just behind them. A few players who has tremendous instincts. E Karlsson, Dats, Giroux and co. A sniper like Stamkos who is so explosive, without really being "that" good. The Sedins. Some up and comers. Chara. A few unique player types.

Going by video games or state you would believe that there is a ton of guys who get it done by themselves on a regular basis. That is just not the case. I'd take McD over Phaneuf for sure. OTOH, the guys mentioned above won't become available. We got Hank who has been up there with those names for years. We have Nash who can make moves only Malkin can match really, while Malkin is so much better than him on the PP and is a lot more consistent.

Sometimes you just gotta take what you get. The best players.

I agree with you that outbidding everyone on the market if Phaneuf hits it sounds like a bad idea. He would probably get 8-9 on long term deal. You gotta make sound hockey decisions and Phaneuf isn't worth that. And I really doubt Toronto will let it go that far. But I wouldn't rule out Phaneuf the player. You are going to have a hard time building a team with perfect players.
