It's not even just that, they got a fortunate playoff bracket last year, lets just admit it. "Not easy" but that was tailor made to hide team deficiencies. The best forward they faced going to the Finals was ... Jason Robertson. Got to duck Nathan MacKinnon and Jack Eichel. No Makar to worry about either.
Elias Peterson is the biggest fraud in hockey and even then they needed no Demko to barely get past Vancouver and Dallas just didn't have the extra gear offensively (they've upgraded seriously this year).
Unlikely they get the same LA to Vancouver to Dallas bracket, and even if they somehow did, Dallas is a lot better this year.

Overall just not a good enough job done by Bowman and Jackson. The nmc that Jackson handed out hurt the team. I guess he was afraid to hurt their feelings to ask them to waive.
They didn’t do enough to fill the holes. The fact that they are ok with the goaltending is insane to me. How McDavid and Draisaitl aren’t demanding better goaltending is also insane to me.
Maybe it forces Knoblauch to actually use the forwards at his disposal.
I think it’s further dissapointing because Vegas and LA did hardly anything.
I just don’t have much faith in the new management group.

The team is better for sure, but not better than last season, and not enough to punch above its weight with a goalie who has had multiple playoff implosions, some of the worst playoff numbers of the cap era for anyone to make it that far, and has regressed over each of his past two seasons, especially this one. Not to mention an offense that has totally cooled off as the team and its number one star player play their worst hockey in years.
I think we need to temper our expectations for Walman. I was reading some posts from San Jose fans and a lot of what they described sounded like Nurse from last season. That said, like Nurse, he was paired with Ceci a lot, and like Nurse, his play improved substantially without Ceci.
That said, remember when Emberson came in from San Jose and people were saying he would be a second-pairing partner for Nurse? Hasn't quite worked out like that, but he is a massive improvement over Ceci...
I f***ing hope and pray that I'm wrong about this team's chances. Nothing would make me happier than to have everyone quote these posts with "Todaso" memes after Skinner and/or Pickard somehow make it work.
