Skinner is playing half decent.. it's just that the bad half is costing us.

This is hilarious.

I know you're joking, but honestly the sad part is that it's barely half decent. Lol.

In 42 games he's below more than a standard deviation below league average in 21 of them, he's a standard deviation above league average in 8 of them, and within a standard deviation of league average in the remaining 13 games.

We get dog shit 50% of the time (you probably lose this every time, might get into it 50%), mediocrity 31% of the time (you probably get the win 50% of the time), and then good games 19% of the time (you probably win this every time).

Thats basically an expected 39 points in 42 games, or a .464 points percentage - good for 27th in the league.

Did we not have room to make another move? Or assets?

This is the last good run at it we have. Kind of concerning that we got a banged up Frederic and a defenceman who, will good, will be a tier or two below the addition of Ekholm for example.

Needed another impact power forward guy up front that can make plays. Florida picking up Marchand for example at that price.

No it just didn't come together and Marchand had some trade protection, so it is possible he chose Florida.

It's not good enough, Stan needed to do something, just a reality too.

Because Skinner let in a terribly weak goal. The team wasn’t able to bail him out one last time. Mcdavid isnt scoring 43 points again. The pk won’t be near perfect again. And skinner is that bad. That is all.
This is how I see it. I don't know if people think last year's PK, overall defending, or McDavid's individual performance was a baseline, but no one should bet that everything will break their way to overcome a .900 sv% again. They were a Brock Boeser freak blood clot away from losing to the Canucks in the 2nd round, for crying out loud.

Their scoring isn't up. Their defending isn't better. Their goaltending is worse. Their special teams are definitely worse. They needed a counter-leverage to balance out at least some of their regressions. Their improvements on D aren't significant enough to balance out Skinner. They could have upgraded goaltending or at least bolstered their scoring, but they did nothing on those fronts despite having the cap space to do so.

And the John Klingberg signing is one of the funnier things we've seen this team do in recent years.

Thanks, you just proved my point.

Bob got beat 3x that game. 1 goal, 1 post and 1 that went thru him but his dman cleared it.

Our only goal came from a bottom 6 player while both theirs came from their top 2 wingers.

It's become so unimaginative to blame goaltending ppl don't even have a grasp on reality..and the reality is our top players failed to show up that game and theirs did.
You're taking it to the other extreme in saying players didn't show up when clearly they did and a matter of inches on both those plays determined a different outcome. Blaming Stu for the Oilers losing game 7 is a lame argument just because the Reinhart goal was weak, but at the same time blaming our top players is equally as weak because a game of inches happened and a post/dman bailed out Bob. That's hockey and anyone who watches it regularly should know this. That's why they play a best of 7 and the truth is Bob stole Florida 2 games while I don't really think you can say Skinner stole any of the games, but this shouldn't be a surprise. One of them is one of the highest paid goalies in the league and the other makes backup goalie money.

Where’s this myth that the west was weak? Sure didn’t say that at the time until the oilers made the finals. Jets avs Vegas and stars were all really good teams, and Dallas’ defense is worse than last year
Kings and Nucks in a row is like 1980's Smythe division weak. The two weakest first round playoff opponents its possible to have. Other than Nashville they were the weakest teams that got into the playoffs and the Kings staggered in. They were bad last year the last half.

Further to this - a team trailing in game 7 of the SCF has only ever tied the game twice in NHL history. Every other time, the team to get the lead first won with that lead.

You can't let in softies in game 7. You just can't.

Maybe it's time to face the harsh truth that the team just overachieved with unsustainable special teams numbers that they'll never replicate again along with a pretty weak conference.

Basically, the '06 team all over again.

A top 4 who will either be forced to play the right side or we will see Kulak ( also not his side) there and him on 3rd pairing.

Kulak on 2RD has always just worked, including last year's playoffs. Nurse's game has also seemed to flop when he's away from Kulak for longer stretches this year (and in the playoffs last year for that matter too).

Walman on the 3rd gives us a very strong Top 4 minutes redundancy and sets him up for softer matchups. For the first time maybe ever I feel like we have 3 solid pairs with the caveat that our top pair has been so brutal relative to their standards this year that it makes any prospective acquisition moot if they don't get it together.

Don’t bother
People have made of scenarios in their head the Oilers miraculously score a 2nd goal at some point “because reasons”

06 team maybe could have replicated that run because Pronger is (well) Pronger. Lowe probably would've continued to be extremely aggressive adding to the team too.

That 06 team definitely did not draw an easy path to the Finals either, '06 Oilers > '24 Oilers.

Yea, it's a bad look. I love Frederic as a player and happy we made that deal, and happy with Walman...but at this point we needed to be doing everything possible to add.

Like, literally everything. Every pick and prospect and certain players should've been on the move to get improvements elsewhere. Goaltending the obvious one, but even more power forward types up front. Marchand for a 1st is wild, like you said possible nmc stuff going on there.

What a letdown.

Man people really need to stop crying. This happens every year. For the first time since Ekholm, we got a top 4 Dman. For the first time, in a LONG LONG TIME, we have 4 actual top 4 Dmen playing in top 4 Dmen spots along with a #4-5 Dman (Kulak) playing. Thats a win.

Yeah we could've used a top six winger. It sucks. Hopefully this makes Knoblauch use Jeff Skinner

Just a top six winger. Weren't you saying that we should get a goalie less than a day ago? Yet I just read this post twice and see no mention of that.

That's a bit of a stretch. The 2022-23 team was very good and were a few momentum swings away from taking a stranglehold on the cup champs that year.

The current Oilers team is very good. They just haven't been playing like it the past month. They need to spend these last 20 games focusing on details and ramping up for the playoffs. They have the ability to do it and they've done it, not just in last season's playoffs, but for large portions of this season.

Time for the guys to use these injections into their lineup as a spark to get going and ramp it up for when it matters.

There’s always a handful of dudes calling everyone whiners. You’re ok with failure, we get it, continue to fail and pretend everything is ok because you don’t want to be a whiner.

You’re not enlightened because you bury your head in the sand, sorry.
Okay then continue whining. Seems like majority of you guys whine just because you enjoy it.
