DeMelo was surprisingly solid in camp and preseason I thought... Definitely better than I expected. Jaros need to get top pairing minutes while Harpur gets his last chance to inspire.

We tend to give our guys a last hurrah, this is Harpurs...

While Jaros may deserve to play it makes no sense moving demelo and harpur just yet. Let the season play out and injuries will happen. Let jaros play big mins in the AHL. We can't be in the business of giving away good defensemen. Harpur and demelo are not old so let's see

... because the "performance reasons" part of the explanation behind Smith's waiving was the baldest of bald-faced lies.

Smiths performance last year was terrible. However so were many players on the team... so you could say it was both performance and contract $ but we all know from past experience the $ was the overriding factor.

If we waived Smith for performance reasons, we should have also waived 3/4 of the team lol

Neither did I, and that's why I've suggested they were hoping a team would take him, to rid themselves of his contract.

The issue is wasnt Dorion trying to trade Smith since last year? So wouldnt he have had knowledge that no one wanted him, even for free... this was a hail mary from a guy taking orders from his master

Hard to say. Harpur has shown flashes of good play and flashes of poor play.

We have a season to find out without rushing in anyone. If by game 30 harpur still sucks then maybe just drop him but we have time. Regular season is a whole different beast. If the team sucks and Lajoie and Wolanin can't handle it maybe we use Harpur to take the losses and hits on a nightly basis

Dzingle + Ceci vs Nurse or Trouba Dzingle i take it for a trade. We have Formenton Tkatchuk and Balcers for the left wing for the year

Same old bs song and dance every year.

"The best players will play!"

Then we see the opening night roster with every one way contract obviously having dictated the cuts.
Showcase for a possible trade!

Nurse has more trade value imo

Way more value.

There are three circumstances under which we should re-sign Dzingel:
1) New owner with tons of money.
2) Stone and Duchene are re-signed.
3) Dzingel comes to us with a very reasonable ask.

If at least 2/3 of those things don't occur, we should trade him for futures in the new year.

Ericsson and Kronwall placed on IR for Detroit. Time to make a call and offer up Harpur for a juicy late round conditional pick.

We should try to get a good prospect in return for both. Or go all in and offer Duchene for the pair plus Zetterberg and Zadina.

While the NHL salary cap floor is $58.8 million, a glance at capfriendly.com shows that the combined salaries of the 22 players on the Senators active roster for Thursday’s season opener against the Chicago Blackhawks is a mere $55.55 million.

Reported by the Ottawa Sun there is not enough money for anything.

And they still wanted to dump another $3.25 in Smith's contract on top of that.

We could have been at like $52ish mil in real dollars against a cap floor of $59mil.

To put this into perspective, the cap ceiling in 2008-09 season, ten years ago, was $56.7mil.

Pass the pipe over this way

There hasn't to be some temptation by Kenny to instantly be rescued from cap oblivion while landing a marquee player all at the expense of one top prospect. He could flip Duchene for all we care.

Mind you, I've always though Dzingle would end up closer to home in either Detroit or Chicago. Something like Dizzy for Franzen and a 3rd sounds like what we'd muster.

Jeeze you must not have expected much.

Constantly out of position, constantly losing his man, and being the cause of scoring chances against was the DeMelo I watched.
