Still think the Sens may be in on a Loui Eriksson trade. Seems like too juicy a cash savings opportunity for Melnyk to let it slip by.

Then again, Eriksson himself could always shut it down with his NTC.

It was enough for Stone... I don’t see a big gap between Stone and Point.
Who thinks it was enough for Stone? Not I.. and Point is younger and can put up more points than Stone. I would not say their values are too far off but Dorion did not get enough for Stone. Not sure many GMs would have made that trade, particularly considering Stone was all but signed.

Stone didn't get full value.

An extension being part of the trade doesn't=full value because Stone doesn't have to sign with all 31 teams. Vegas was bidding against rental prices. Stone being willing to sign there gave us leverage to get Brannstrom but if Stone was willing to sign with multiple teams who wanted to sign him, we would have gotten a lot more than that.

These Eklund rumors are ridiculous. I don't even mind his (alleged) fake rumor hustle, but he should get more realistic with these. It's not difficult to predict Sens trades. Just see where we can save cash and increase our cap hit.

I've come up with a way for the Sens to acquire Nikita Gusev and to simultaneously cut payroll.

Vegas signs Gusev to a 2 year contract worth 8.25M total. The catch is that they immediately pay him a bonus worth 4.75M and his base salary would be 750k. In the 20/21 season he'd be owed 2.75M straight salary. Nice and legal, definitely no circumvention going on here, Mr. Bettman.

Then Vegas trades us Nikita Gusev and David Clarkson for Dylan DeMelo, Filip Chlapik and a 2nd round pick.

Point is a 23 year old RFA, Stone was UFA.

I 100% agree. But point may only sign a 5 year deal to take him to UFA and Stone was willing to go 8.

I’d say Stones value at 8 years is worth much more than Point for 5 (if that’s all he will sign).

Ok, if that's what you think. I definitely disagree. 5 years of the point age 23 to 28 and then the possibility to either resign him or trade him at 28 is worth more than the extra 3 years at 33, 34 and 35 of Stone and the ability to re-sign or trade him at 35.

You get exclusively peak years with one guy, and full trade value at the end of his deal with little risk of regression. That's worth more in my book.

Whoever gets Gusev is going to be very happy.

We'll see what happens with Marner as well. If he gets a 5 year deal . He finished 11th with 94 pts and Point finished 12th with 92. Point is a C as well. Now Tampa may still sign point to a home town tax friendly discount but I would think Marner and Point are pretty close in value.

Ottawa
Surely they have to make room for some of the young guys; Paul, Veronneau, Brown, Chlakpik, Batherson, Formenton?
Or they keep those guys down in Belleville until the inevitable injuries hit and finally make the playoffs. Get those 'spects some meaningful spring hockey.

If a move happens, I expect it'll be a goalie shipped out. When's the next buyout period?

Not sure what we could send back in the way of salary that would save the team money this season now that Smith is gone.

Bobby would be the only candidate, imo.

My hypothetical trade would be Condon and Boedker for Eriksson and Schaller. That clears 3.6M from Ottawa's books this season due to both of those guys already having their bonuses paid by Vancouver.

The Canucks could just bury both of the players we send them to open up a little cap space, but the real value for them is getting out of the final two years of Eriksson's contract.

We would flip Schaller at the deadline for a very late pick, and we get Eriksson for three years for 9M in cash vs. 18M on the cap.

Very frugal deal.

We are getting closer and closer to Boro being the last man standing.

Ryan for Lucic could make that happen.

I don't think we trade Anderson because short of Hogberg being ready, we don't have a replacement. We also can't acquire a goal signed beyond this season, otherwise we risk blocking Hogberg who will be on a 1 way in 20-21.

I think we have another trade coming after signing bonus is paid because Condon was not bought out. It doesn't make sense for us to not have bought him out because it saves 1M for a player who we don't have a spot for.

My guess would be we have a deal arranged with us taking a cap dump like a Lucic, Eriksson, or Backes and the other team taking Condon as part of the deal. Only we cannot pull the trigger until a bonus is paid.

We're above the cap floor right now...and that's without White signed.

Doesn't seem like there's any reason to make any more trades. There's only so many higher cap, lower salary trades that can be made.

Smith for Anisimov came 1 day after AA's signing bonus was paid.
Lucic's signing bonus is (reportedly) being paid today.
Gonna go out on a limb and say the Sens acquire Lucic (and maybe another dump like Manning?) in the next day or two with Bobby Ryan and Mike Condon headed out the door.
