Well of course it's both to some degree. Fundamentally it's asset management as you say. I think everyone can agree that using important assets on rentals when you are a bubble team is foolish. However, there isn't necessarily anything wrong with trading a prospect/pick for a player. If that player performs well, they may boost the value of other players on your team in addition to their own.

This is absolutely something I do not trust the current (or past) management group to do effectively. They have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to dilute or lose value.

What about Kosk, Yam, Kas and a 1st for Domi and Korpisalo
Not sure if a 1st is enough for them to take on Kassian

So I guess some posters have to hide their profile for the amount of horse crap that gets tossed back at them for their word salad posts to attack another poster opinion . This looks good on them.

We are a little different than most bubble teams. Well it could be opinion but it seems like with our team, a great goalie and maybe a decent D it would be a team that could go deep in the playoffs

Hmm well I would argue that nothing I have seen over the last 2-3 years has led me to believe this team is a playoff threat in its current form. Would love to see it happen though!

I'm kind of jumping into your argument here, but at the beginning of last year @DominicT (a Bruins fan) did an investigation on teams' draft picks from 2010-2015. He was looking at which teams drafted the most players that had played at least 100 games during that timeframe. The info is a bit outdated, because while it was only a year ago, because of the weird 56-game season it's more like 1.5 seasons ago.

Why do you act like this is hard to look up ... it's easy.

Pittsburgh Penguins Draft History at hockeydb.com

2002 - Whitney, meh
2003 - MAF, tank draft
2004 - Malkin + Goligoski, tank draft
2005 - Crosby + Letang, tank draft obvious home run
2006 - so-so, Staal over Toews is a miss IMO
2007 - shit
2008 - shit
2009 - fairly shit
2010 - kinda shit, got Rust
2011 - shit
2012 - Pouliot a big bust, but Matt Murray (good)
2013 - One actual good draft class, wow
2014 - meh
2015 - meh
2016 - shit
2017 - shit
2018 - shit
2019 - looks like more shit

The main difference between the Oilers and Penguins is not really that they drafted better than the Oilers. They got Letang in the 3rd round of the 05 draft, he's better than Nurse or Klefbom.

That's your main difference from the two teams sum of good players drafted the last 20 years.

The Oilers got about the same amount of good players through their drafts as Pittsburgh, Chicago, etc., they just have not been able to draft a Norris caliber D, but there's a lot of luck involved with that, you can draft for 20+ years and not get that player. If you don't have this luxury you have to be a extra dumb f*** organization to go cheap on goaltending on top of this ... ladies and gentlemen, your current Edmonton Oilers.

Letang was a huge pull for them, coupled with having the confidence to take Fleury 1st overall in 2003. That right there is the difference between the Oil and the Penguins. We struggled for years with inept defence and goaltending. They corrected that immediately.

They didn’t go off the board for fleury though he was the top rated guy.

Yes he was, I’ve seen a couple other mock drafts that had staal ranked top. Still hard for a team to pick a goalie at top spot. I guess my point being is that Oilers pass on goalies all the time. Was it wallstedt the latest example?

I just went through the first 10 or so pages of this thread and it's amazing how many posters fell for some fake twitter insider posting that Holland had a press conference set for Sunday and then some random poster saying that he saw Woodcroft on a plane flying to Edmonton. Don't some of you ever learn?

Last draft is an example for sure but I don’t think otherwise that’s really been the case. They drafted a goalie in 6 consecutive drafts between 2014-2019 they just weren’t ever in a position to necessarily get the top ranked guy.

names that come to the top of my head, perhaps there was a chance to trade up for Askarov and they had the chance to draft spencer knight in his draft year. Cossa and walstedt were other misses imo. Again, not sure if they could
Have traded up for 3/4 goalies but knight was definitely in range. I remember wanting him badly. lol

Unless Speedyturtle or Friedman says it, I don't believe it.
