I guess I just want to see the captain of this team step up when they needed him this last game… and make players around him better. Aside from Drai, he is not good at that.

The team was in full control of the game, up 3-1 in the third.

If you're going to get scored on 4 times in 15 minutes, there's not a lot of leadership that's going to do much.

Take the same game and have a legit starter (or last year's Smith) make an extra save or two, and the game ends 4-2 Oilers and everyone here is happy thinking it was a great game.

No, you’re right about that…. I agree. Goaltending completely blows. That is on the goalies, AND on Holland for A. thinking this was a smart plan this season, and B. Doing nothing to fix it…

I’m just tired of the narrative that this player or that player “can’t play” with McDavid…. Crosby had some plugs on his lines over the years and he made them work, made them better…. I honestly wonder if McDavid dictates who his line mates are…

Anyone can play with McDavid.

Last night is a game they win 4-2 with a real goalie. And then everyone is happy.

No goaltending though and your opponent always has a chance to come back, and Ottawa did. Is what it is.

Doesn't matter who Connor is or isn't playing with if your goalie is allowed 3+ goals per night you will lose more than you win in the long haul. And that's been the case every year here really.

Last year if Smith did not come back and post a remarkable 2.31 GAA (again to put this into context, this is a lower goals against per game than the no.1 defence in the league, the Carolina Hurricanes, allowed the last two years) ... the Oilers miss the playoffs last year too.

Starting goalie's SV%
Year 3
Crosby .921
McDavid .908

Year 4
Crosby .912
McDavid .906

Year 5
Crosby .905
McDavid .902

Year 6
Crosby .918
McDavid .923

Year 7
Crosby .913
McDavid .900

In Crosby's years Fleury was playing 60+ games as well, where as the numbers in McDavid's years would be for less games and backup numbers significantly worse.

The Oilers are allowing more high danger scoring changes than we are getting. Yeah, we could sneak into playoffs if our goalie would constantly outperform the opposite goalie, but that's it. Getting a true #1 with a high cost would be like putting lipstick on a pig. The problems run deeper. Going for the fast and easy fix would ruin the future of the team.

Why is Woodcroft such a good coach it's he gained a lot of experience watching Tmac make bad decisions Brunette in Florida is another example Most of the top teams are being coached by either former assistants or a long track record of coaching in minor leagues . The Old school coaches are spinning their wheels for the most part in the league
Yep
He was also the video coach from 2005-2008 in Detroit and left after Detroits last cup (so I guess he has a history with Holland).

He got to learn from what Babcock did right and wrong. Learned the same from McLellan for 10 years and has spend the last 4 putting it into action. He has put in the work for 17 years.

If they don't get a good starter within I would say the next 6-10 months their relationship with McDavid and Draisaitl is going to be destroyed.

They allowed as many GA last year with Koskinen or Skinner in net as they do this year. The difference was with Smith they allowed dramatically less a year ago.

Because he was having the 2nd best season of his life.

If the Oilers don't want to spend on goaltending, then this McDavid era is shot, they are not even making the playoffs, not this year, not next year and take a wild guess what happens then.

If they miss this year, the damage done as is is very significant.

Oilers have way more holes to fill than you give them credit for.

We are an all around shitty team. McDrai's value is overestimated because they play more powerplay than anyone in the league, which is harmful for the rest of the forwards. Trading away McDavid would probably be the wisest thing to do if we want to become a true contender.

Your attitude reminds me of people who want to climb Mount Everest but then want to quit half way through because they realize it's too hard, too cold whatever and what they want is to just stop everything.

Well it's too late at that point, you either keep going up or down, but there is no "now I'm just going to throw myself a pity party and cry here" option. You're going to freeze to death if you just stop.

Everest is pretty much a walk in the park now.

Yet people still die on it. When the weather turns some people want to be back home in their bed.

Well tough shit, you're on the mountain now, you either keep moving or you die.
I think the most important thing on the mountains is to know when it is time to go higher, and when to stay in your tent and weather the storm. Stubborn, "brave" people tend to die there.

We are on the mountain. That bitch is getting climbed. There's no "now I feel sorry for myself because this isn't easy" option.

No one gives a crap if you think now it's too hard. You keep moving foot by foot.

Not when there is an earthquake followed by 2 avalanches followed by a 5 day blizzard. The stupid people keep going and die. You need a different analogy but I get what your saying.

There's no earthquake that's occured here. They can even right now make the playoffs with no fuss if what needed to be done was done. So this is more like a person who gets up there and starts crying half way through that it's "hard" and they just want to be back home at a Tim Horton's with a cup of coffee. That ain't how shit works up there.

The Oilers are just getting their just deserts for refusing to ever spend anything on goaltending.

The last time they spent anything significant on goaltending was 2006, and look what happened there. This team loooooooves to pretend they've "upgraded the roster" and then spend jack shit on the goaltending, just like in 05-06 that team almost never even got into the playoffs because of that.

Well, ok, lol, I'll just simplify it:

Team knows they collapse without goaltending. Doesn't want to spend anything ever to upgrade it. Ever.

Every draft pick is a precious fart from Holland's ass that they believe is going to be the next Kucherov or Hedman or something potentially they think when in reality they're picking the next Kailer Yamamoto (a prospect every other team has 3 of).

The funniest thing is the one year they actually traded their 1st to get Roloson and went to the Cup final, the guy they drafted in the 2nd round (Jeff Petry) is better than most of their non top 5 draft "precious, soooooooooooo special!!!!!" 1st round picks like the Niinimaki's and Paajarvi's and even Eberle's of the world.

That’s much better.

Holland loves old goalies who don’t make a lot of money. He’s even on record as saying he doesn’t believe in spending a lot to get a goalie. He’s shown that by being slightly outbid on Markstrom by the Flames. Wouldn’t give the extra year or dollars. Wouldn’t go after any of the free agent goalies other than trying to get the always injured Kuemper for cheap.

Until you get rid of Holland your not getting a goalie fix.

Well he can hang his hat on that philosophy, I can guarantee you good money, he would be sleeping a lot better these nights if he had spent on a goalie first in the summer.

You don't have Lidstrom here numb nuts, you kinda want to make sure you're good in goal.

He'll also pay the price for his stupidity this time I think. Katz is going to be very angry if there is no playoff revenue to show for this year, the first year they get fans back. Holland can't say "bu bu but I made the playoffs the previous two years!", that doesn't mean shit business wise, there was no gate revenue for those years, this year there is.

So he f***ed himself nicely here. I think he'll be allowed to save face and remain POHO (he shouldn't, but he will) but he will be removed from the GM position for taking a risk this stupid.
