Would anyone here turn down Yak for Severson? I don't think that I've ever seen him play TBH but on paper and based on what Devils fans say about him it'd probably make sense for us.

Yes I would. This team cant score goals. Not sure how trading Yakupov for Severson addresses that.

Nail Yakupov + Mark Fayne + EDM 1st 2016 (top 3 protected)

for

Adam Larsson + Tuomo Ruutu + NJD 2nd (conditional if the EDM pick is top 4-10)

NJ says hell no.

You know what might help? A d-man who can actually move the puck. That's generally something you need to score goals. Yak hasn't even been a consistent scorer and has a combined 25 goals in 2 seasons. Not exactly awe-inspiring stuff. Not wanting to trade him based on the argument that you'd lose out on goal-scoring is ridiculous.

Watching the game last night, D wasn't the BIGGEST problem for me. I loved the game Schultz played. I wasn't impressed with Fayne and Klefbom had shaky moments.

Our problem is our forward depth. It's all skill and no grit. We have a great group of players to make up a top 1st line in the NHL. But our middle 6 just isn't cutting it. A good team has a middle 6 that can keep pushing, grinding and controlling the play.

Draisaitl will be a key member of our middle 6 going forward.

I really don't see why NJ is trading Larsson unless they are getting a Hall, Ebs or Nuge. Larsson has come a long way and is continuing to play big minutes this year. There is a massive drop off in minutes on the NJ back end. You have

Greene 24:48
Larsson 22;52
Then Gelinas and Severson at 18:06 and 18:04.

They can't afford to move Larsson let alone for an unproven guy. And there is a reason why they let Fayne walk for so cheap. While I don't doubt they'd take him back I don't think they are going to value him all that much. The guy isn't even playing 15 minutes a night on our defense.

even our top line isn't much compared to almost all 29 other top lines. When was the last time any line scored 3 goals? 3 years ago? I can't remember.

Our so-called skill is extremely over-rated. Without Eberle, we haven't a single player that can just straight up shoot it past a goalie. Like Tarashenko's goal last nite; that had nothing to do with a Dman's first pass. Same for Spezza's winner on Tuesday; just a forward scoring a goal all on his own. We have nobody that can do that nearly enough (tho, Mcd, presumably, will be able to).

The excuse that our offense is all predicated on our D is getting tired. Our offensive players are simply not that good. Hall drive's the play, Eberle can shoot and dangle, McD is coming, but RNH and especially Yak are not cutting it.

Yeah, it's becoming painfully obvious that they need more help on the blueline. I actually like the guys they have, but they all need to slide down the line-up a bit.

Anyone not named McDavid should be available for the right return. I assume Chiarelli waits until Eberle comes back to start shopping guys. These games against Calgary and Vancouver are going to tell a lot.

We're not getting a top pairing dman, but who did Chicago cover Keith with before he was the number one? Doughty on LA? I legitimately don't know, but as those teams used to be terrible I suspect the answer to that question is a good place to start when looking for D targets.

Buff and Burns should be the top targets, but they aren't going anywhere unless their teams tank it.

Face facts, everyone: nothing is happening this year. Barring promotions for Nurse and Draisaitl, WYSIWYG.

I thought I knew, but I didn't so I looked it up.

CHI really had nothing. keith's first few years was Aucoin and Spacek (who came to us part way through the year). Vandermeer was in there as was Sopel at some point. But even then Vandermeer wasn't exactly old. What they had was a young core Keith, Seabrook, Wiz, Buff and others.

I really don't think it was until he's 5th year when they added Campbell that they really supporting their d, but by then their cheap owner had died and the new guy finally injected money into the club.

Hmmmm interesting. On the one hand, that doesn't help us with targets much. On the other, at least it shows that D CAN develop without being super protected. Not ideal, but maybe one of our young d or trading for Jones isn't the worst possible outcome the.

Our biggest problem has been the inability to pull the trigger and move out guys for a better fit. Teams like CHI and LA weren't picking first overall year after year. When you aren't picking 1st overall you can pick better fit guys instead of taking the BPA.

If Carolina is out I think Eric staal would be a good fit for a vet forward.

For d I think you're maybe looking at a prospect or fringe guy.

Yakupov for petrovic÷
Hall for vatane÷÷

Unless someone better miraculously comes available.

Phaneuf...,maybe. Chara? That's my sense.

Also sobotka would be good temporary replacement for slepy.

I'm about ready to blow this team up honestly. Only untouchable is McDavid. I know people say "blah blah only 4 games, wait until the offseason" but I think that's a load of crap. Lets face it, we're not making the playoffs this year, so why not get a jump start on next season by start making some moves sooner rather than later? If we make a bunch of big deals in the off season it's just gonna be the same again at the start of next year, team coming out slow out of the gates because lack of chemistry, bunch of new players etc. Better to get these guys in at least by christmas time so they can gel and learn the systems and whatnot.

I'd probably move Hall and Fayne for either something like Hoffman + Ceci + pick from OTT (as has been discussed previously) or something like Severson + Zacha + Tlusty from NJD. I realize getting Zacha doesn't help us much in the short-term but I think we need to build around the new core with McDavid, Drai and Nurse and have as a goal to be really tough to play against. Zacha helps with that as he is both big, a good skater, has a mean streak and most important of all; can absolutely wire the puck. We need a natural goal scorer on this team in the worst way and he has the potential to be that very soon. Tlusty will act as a cheap placeholder. He had a great year in the lockout season with Staal and Semin, maybe he could find his way back to that form with McDavid and Eberle and even if he doesn't it's okay IMO. Severson obviously replaces Fayne and gives us a real good up-and-coming puck-moving right-handed defenseman. He'd look good together with Sekera I'd think.

Nuge I don't mind keeping but I also wouldn't mind moving him for a veteran centre who can hold down the fort until Drai is ready. If we'd do the NJ deal then we'd be getting younger and could really use a veteran and that's why I'd be OK with trading Nuge. A Jason Spezza type guy would've been perfect for this. Stastny would've been great too. Or if Tampa needs to clear some cap to sign Stamkos I'd absolutely love Valtteri Filppula. In my eyes he's the most underrated player in the league. I'm sure there's going to be good deals out there if we're just willing to put our kids on the market.

Yakupov + Klefbom for Chara + 2nd.

Posters will ***** saying Chara is long past due but still better than what we have IMO.
