I'm down with moving the pick. Just not for Buff.

And what happens when no one better than Buff is available in the season?

At some point we're going to have to take a risk to improve this squad. MacT and Lowe waited and waited for years for the 'perfect' target while filling the squad with jobbers. Which has lead us to this point.

Buff isn't an ideal target, but he ticks a lot of boxes for what we need to improve on as a squad. If he can give us that, I say do it. We've been toiling at the bottom for far too long.

The thing is you can't be the Oilers and move a first without an absolute ironclad slam-dunk guarantee that Buff would/is/will/has re-signed. The way we're going that pick is top 5 again.

I'm sure in the negotiating process we'll talk to Buff's reps and figure out the framework for an extension. I don't think that'll be a problem.

Current strategy is to hope that Parayko really is the next true god king of the back end and we can turn that pick into Shattenkirk.

Not sure if there are any other opportunities for impact Dmen on the trade market since im expecting Burns to extend in SJ.

I agree. We will be lucky if we find a top d on the market. We can still use a point shot and a depth puck mover though.

The only downside to Buff is the long term contract he needs at 30 years old. Like you say he checks off so many boxes that the Oilers are lacking in. I bet we are on his no trade list or a deal would already be done, especially with the rumors that Boston is hot for him. Chia would trade a lot to one-up the two stooges in Boston who hate his guts and would trade us a crap player for Taylor Hall.:sarcasm:

You sign Buff as a UFA? We aren't making the playoffs so trading the 1st for a upcoming ufa is bad asset management.

If we are trading our 1st I want it for a guy with at least another year on the contract. Cause sign and trades just don't happen.

You need to at least contact him now. Maybe nothing comes of it. Maybe WPG has zero intention at trading him anyway, but we need to be contacting any team who has a d-man that might be available that is a top 4 d-man.

Last thing you need is for another Boychuk scenario where Buff goes elsewhere and doesn't even hit free agency.

True but giving up a first for a potential rental as a non playoff team is not a good idea.

Chances are if you're making that trade, you've spoken to Buff's people about an extension or a framework of one. I highly doubt we'd give up our first with a pretty good idea that he'd re-sign here.

We need the Jets approval to do that I believe, but yeah. If they're looking to trade him, I'm sure they'd let us talk to him.

It really is time to blow this team up. Trade RNH for a Larsson or Jones
than trade Hall for a number 2 Center.

As an outside observer, RNH is the last person you should trade. Hall and Eberle need to go. They needed to go 2 years ago. Yak? Yikes, I don't even know. No point trading him because he won't return much. Might as well hold onto him and hope he learns how to play hockey.

RNH is a gem, and you don't trade players like that. He leads on the ice and seems like a character guy off the ice. Hell, even Shultz is playing well for you guys from what I've seen so far.

RNH, Draisaitl, McDavid, Shultz, Reinhart (Edit: Oh and of course Nurse) isn't a bad core to build around.

Yak to Montreal for a 2nd
Hall to Pittsburgh at 50% retention for Kunitz and a 1st
RNH and Schultz for Jones
Purcell for a trash bag.
Pouliot for a baguette

Those are just... bad trades. Bad, bad trades.

how are they bad? you get a number 3/4 D right now with the potential in the very near future to be a number 1 plus he's a right shot and you get a 29 yr old center who can basically fill RNHs void until Mcdavid and Drai can take over.

Yakupov + Fayne
for
Lucic + Ehrhoff

LA won't have the money to sign Lucic anyway lets hope they continue to nosedive.

Time to end the Yakupov experiment and time to stop being such a pillowy soft top six.
