we just called up Michael Haley. he is that type of player.. although he shouldnt play with Stepan and Callahan, he looked good there. i would give that line a bit more time together, maybe they be the Rangers energy line...

agreed. didn't mean to overlook Haley, I see him as a useful 4th line player. Don't think you can envision him be anything but that at this level.

This Brad Richards made $20M in one calendar year. Pro-rated $4M salary this season. He is owed $33M over the next 4 years. Gaborik is coming off shoulder surgery and is playing a different position. You can give him a benefit of the doubt but he needs to start producing too. Richards has no excuse. Sather got a top 6/9 forward at the time in Higgins plus McDonagh for Gomez with 5 years left on his contract. Sather should be able to get a top young player as part of the deal for Gaborik. It won't be easy with the cap set at $64.3M and Gaborik having a $7.5M cap hit. Unless this a Percy Harvin and Darrelle Revis deal where Harvin is worth more than Revis because Seattle can franchise Harvin while Revis can't be franchised so its a 1 year deal if no contract extension is signed. MTL had a ton of cap space that summer and they had Higgins in the deal. Higgins signed a 1 year deal worth $2.25M with the Rangers. Sather will need to take back a roster player.

Sather gave Richards that crazy contract...he has to go before any other decisions are made . Gorton...Come On Down...to the NY Version of The Price Is Not always Right !

With all due respect to some of the posters on this board thre is no way Stepan signs a two year bridge deal!! With everything he does for this team, he is worth more than that. I know the ROR deal was a bad deal for the whole league but it was a deal that got done and let's not be that stupid to think a player like Stepan would not get a better deal than 2.5 and two years. Stepan will get 3 to 3.5 per year for sure. He is second on the team in scoring, he is second in the plus minus category, he leads the forwards in TOI, and he has been our best center for the last 20 games. I also believe that fact that Stepan has not missed a game in his NHL career is going to come into play. With all this said, he gets more than Hags. I also think Hags has been really good this year and he is going to get paid to.

There is nothing Stepan has not done for this team in his first three years! IMO, because he is on the first PP, he is on the first Pk with Cally, he plays on the first 5 on 3 PP, and he is on the ice in the last minute of play tells me that he is more valueable than Hags. I think we are dreaming if we think he will only get 2.5 x 2 years. The Rangers have to trade Gabby or there is no way they sign Step, Hags, and Mac. All three of these guys are going to get paid or they are going elsewhere. This team has to find a way to free up some cash to sign these three young players. Just my thoughts.........

For a team that lacked a 1C Richards was a good option at the time and was pursued by other teams.

Brad wanted to play in NY, for his old coach. This wasn't a bad move, nor was it Sather pursing washed up players pre lockout. this is tired beaten horse that some must alway resurrect during times of trouble...

This is no excuse for Richards piss poor play, which has me very confounded....

Sather wasn't giving Richards 9 years if Torts wasn't the coach and there was cap recapture part of the 05 CBA.

It does sound enticing.

What's the scouting report on Mika Z?

Very good all around game and plays a physical brand of hockey. Can play center or RW and is responsible in all three zones. If he can achieve his offensive potential, he's a possible first line player. More likely he's a top-tier 2nd line forward who can do a bit of everything. Has a nasty streak in his game too which I'd like to see him use a little more.

I'd be very happy with him as part of a Gaborik trade.

follow the bruins model

if you want to follow a model of winning a cup and then compete for more lets take a look at the boston bruins. peter chiarelli is a master of building. first he makes amazing trades, signs excellent contracts and matures his draft picks nicely. look at the trade he did with toronto fleecing brian burke ( currently out of a gm job due to this trade) of getting seguin and hamilton for kessel. he gets a top franchaise center and franchaise dman for yrs to come. then gets horton and campbell for wideman enough said there. seidenberg for bitz, where is bitz? signs chara and his core peverley , kelly bergeron, marchand, thornton paille to nice cap friendly contracts. gets rid of deadwood quickly like thomas to the islanders. signs julien to long term contract. the mans a genious and we have a dino for a gm, until slats is here dont expect anything.

I would take that bet...

Of course! Why didn't we think of that?

Ben Eager on waivers.. would be an upgrade over playing Bickel at forward.. go get him Slats. hated him on the Flyers but is a useful player.... watch the Pens or Flyers claim him, especially since the Flyers lost Sestito

Great post. This is spot on

Phil Kessel was not traded for Seguin and Hamilton. Kessel was traded for Toronto's 1st round picks in 10, 11. Toronto would have never thought that they would be drafting 2nd overall. That was not where they were when they traded for Kessel. Bruins got lucky that Toronto sucked and got them Seguin.

LA needs defense. They have been hit hard by the injury bug with Greene and Mitchell. Buffalo has too many d-men.

Also of note, both Greene and Mitchell are hard-nosed defensive defenders. Regehr.

multiple sens fans have offered and agreed upon that package on the main board, and im absolutely drooling over it:nod:

I would say those Sens fans are in the minority. If you read the trade thread on the Ottawa board you'll see that most aren't interested in trading Zibanejad.

The Sens are not a contender right so now it doesn't make sense to trade away our top forward prospect other than Silfverberg for a 31-year old guy signed for only 1 more year. Zibanejad is going to be part of the team for the next decade. Sens would be much better off saving the 7.5M to spend on a UFA rather than trade away long term assets.
