Rumor: Trade Rumor Thread Part VI: Gaborik for Peanuts

I'm not disagreeing with him not being what he has been in the past, and he started off this season terribly, but let him play within his limits, 3rd line minutes, maybe bumping up to 2nd line duties on nights he's playing well, and he would be a good option for us as far as Depth goes. We're weak on the left side if you don't count Gaborik there, another guy that could add maybe 25-30ish points in this shortened season could go a long way.

He would be useful but I keep going back to the price, few teams will be interested.
I can see Montreal, Pitt, Toronto and Ottawa in a bidding war.

Oh I agree completely, I don't see how we can realistically afford him with so many "buyers" this season.

2.5 Mil/year for 40+ point scorer is not overpaid.

Glencross has the best possession numbers on Calgary this year, but an abnormally low On-Ice Sh% has kept his assists down. He is currently playing (or was, if he's injured) way above his contract.

However unlike for example Steen/Hörnqvist/Pacioretty who has led their teams in possession throughout their careers, this is the first year Glencross has done so, and last year he was ranked very low after a few middling seasons. His possession numbers may not be sustainable.

I'd be surprised if Glencross was moved though, IIRC he is one of the players Calgary fans really want to keep.

The Rangers are scouting the Kings again tonight

Please don't mention Babchuk. :sarcasm:

Is that Sather's kid Shannon scouting all of the Kings games?

https://twitter.com/EricFrancis/status/311312214709637120

What is a full year of Gaborik worth?

my bet Sather is looking at Colin Fraser, Dustin Penner, Rob Scuderi.... Sather i think is looking for help in certain areas but also wants players that have won and have some playoffs expeierence.... Fraser has 2 cups, one with Kings and Hawks and is only 28 years old...

The Rangers can't afford a $2.55M third liner. Pay Stepan. Pay Hagelin. Pay McDonagh. The last two are arbitration eligible. All 3 of those players are having very good seasons. Fill out the roster. Operate the team. $64.3M cap next season. The NHL said yesterday revenue will be $2.1B this season and not $2.4B. If the business doesn't come back enough, the 2004-15 cap will also be $64.3M. It can't drop below $64.3M.

Katie Strang had another chat yesterday

Geoff (NY)

How about a Gaborik for Iginla trade? Jerome seems like a much better fit then Marian right now and it will allow the Rangers cap space since Iginla is free-agent!!!

Katie Strang (1:04 PM)

I'm certainly not in the camp that thinks a Gaborik trade is out of the realm of possibility, but I don't think the deal for Iginla makes sense. For one, I think the Rangers like Iginla but probably have concerns about his age/speed in playing in their system. And if teh Flames are gonna trade Iginla, doesn't that signal a reboot? In that case I think they want prospects and picks

Brian (NJ)

Did Boyle play himself out of Tortorella's doghouse yesterday?

Katie Strang (1:15 PM)

It's going to take more than one game for Boyle to get back in Tortorella's good graces, but it's always encouraging when a player responds in a positive way to a benching or demotion. I think the problem for Boyle is more of a numbers game now. Not sure where he fits with Rangers if he isn't producing. If he can't pick it up, I suspect he will be moved before the deadline. Can still be a highly effective player, in my opinion, but Rangers may not be best fit anymore

Matt (NYC)

Any chance you see the Rangers make a move at the trade deadline? Maybe Gaborik or Boyle? Any chance we see Kreider again this year?

Katie Strang (1:26 PM)

I think both players could be dealt, yes. I think Boyle is more likely, but he has to actually play to command some trade value. In terms of targets, I think the Rangers will look to add some depth guys similar to the Darroll Powe trade. Maybe not the sexiest moves, but necessary. Think a guy like Nate Thompson would be a great fit. Also, Rangers need a right-handed defenseman. Them and everyone else, though...

http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/47349

Thompson is a rental.

Do some fans realize Iginla plays the right side and Gaborik is playing the left side because Nash and Callahan play the right side? The Rangers get the older player. A player who will be a free agent in July. Iginla will be 36 on July 1. Gaborik is a better player than Iginla at this stage of their career. 5 year age difference.

Other fans suggest Gaborik for Perry. How are the Rangers paying Perry? Another right winger. Perry will get $9M plus this summer. Where are the Rangers fitting him into a $64.3M cap?

I can see moving Gaborick for players that fit our system, that are more physical, etc., but to trade Gaborik for a rental player in April is worse than letting him walk for nothing.

I like Iginla, but not for just a couple of months. A move like that would set us back. We can get a few good pieces for Gabs, no sense wasting it on a temporary solution...

Man, 2 years ago everybody wanted Clowe. Go figure.

Morrow as well. Both have fallen off.

I don't mind taking a chance on rentals, so long as the price is late picks and AHL depth prospects. Otherwise the price is too steep for the risk.

I would take Clowe or Glencross for sure. IMO Gaborik is gone either at the deadline or over the off-season so the cap numbers would be fine.

Iginla for Gaborik makes NO SENSE.

I really think a player like Brassard would be a good fit here as a 3c. Letestu would be another solid pick-up.

Boyle, IMO, is going to be on his way out.

Send one of Steve Eminger/Stu Bickel/Matt Gilroy to Ottawa for a 7th rounder & an AHL depth guy (Hugh Jessiman :amazed: ??). Otherwise just waive one of them if there are no takers. Can always be recalled if not picked up.
Sign Zuccarello
Acquire Jamie McBain from Carolina for Matt Gilroy/Stu Bickel/Steve Eminger, a mid level NYR prospect and a 3rd rounder
Bring in one of Morrow, Penner or Antropov for added playoff depth as a rental for picks/prospects if price is acceptable. No to any longer contracts.
Works within the 50 contract limit
Keep Boyle, Gaborik and the rest of core on the team - at least until the offseason when the contract situation becomes clearer

Go to war

I have a feeling Sather likes Stoll.

I know many people here think Asham may have no value but I think a deal like:

Boyle + Asham + for Stoll + makes a lot of sense. Stoll is overpaid but is a solid 3rd line center who can play the PP point well and has a very good shot. Cup winner, good 2-way player. Veteran presence as well. Can play the wing when needed.

He is a Sather type of move and considering they have been following the Kings, it just makes too much sense.

I get nervous about hearing names of guys who are older and play a highly physical game. Morrow and Clowe have fallen off of a cliff.

Stoll certainly has a nice shot from the point, but if Richards continues to play the point on the PP, that means we're icing 5 forwards and the two on the point have lousy foot speed. Not a fan at all.

This is such a haphazardly assembled roster. 3 top-six RW's; No true 3rd line center; One legitimate top-six LW; And a rotating door as a 3rd pairing defense. It's not as simple as renting a role player.

NYR lost to NJD in ECF because
1 : were wounded from two 7 game series
2 : were unable to establish a fore check against a faster more tenacious NJD bottom six .
Adding lethargic dinosaurs who can no longer skate like Morrow and Clowe is not what wins .
LAK AND NJD had solid top six players and fast hard in the puck bottom six who could contribute in both sides of the puck .
Not sure that perfect player is available but as good as HALPERN , POWE , are on PK they are 4 th liners with no point production . Our top six if healthy and productive is set need to either get JTM , PYATT , CK ? To produce points regularly or find a 3rd liner who can .
Any lateral move for Gaborik seems unrealistic .
Boyle is not bringing back a player like Stoll . Only other options are dinosaurs with bloated or expiring contracts .
If Clowe , Penner , Morrow produce would be great by them playing " TORTS hockey " without any speed effectively seems like a poor choice

Renting some of the role players rumored for draft picks are wasted assets. Some of these guys not playing well aren't going to turn the light on in a new city. Clowe is reportedly battling an injury. Morrow was done last season. Stoll and Glencross have term remaining past whatever Boyle and Asham have left. I saw a tweet by a SJ writer. He was answering a tweet about Clowe. The Sharks want scoring in return. That is not a match for the Rangers.

You know who would be perfect 3C right now is artem anisimov but then we would t have Nash . Too bad we couldn't pry him out of Columbus .

I'd like to see the Rangers offer something to Edmonton for Ladislav Smid who's a UFA this summer and a young UFA at 27. He'd certainly help on the back end. Top 4 kind of guy.

Right now of all these potential options I only like Letestu, but at what cost?

I agree with the sentiment most of these rentals do not fit here or thd team needs and would be a waste of assets. No more plugs and hasbeens.

Yeah, I'm only for "rental" players that can be signed. I loathe pending UFA's that play a few games and cost us significant picks. Never liked that approach.

.

Same here.

Thats why the words "Ryan Callahan" "next contract" and "30+ years old" scare the heck out of me.

I get what you're saying but they're both expiring contracts. So the risk and commitment is small (assuming they don't overpay for either).

Steve Ott

would love to get this guy. what would it cost knowing:
a. what they gave up to get him
b. they traded for size when they got him so we will have to move size.

I will disagree.

We need secondary scoring, at 2.55 Mil for 3 years for 40+ point scoring LW, you can't get a better deal than that.
How much do you think Zucco would sign for?

Far less than 2.55 per year. Zucc is an RFA without arbitration rights. You need to check out capgeek and see what salary commitments we have next year, as well as which players are up for new contracts. Unless we trade away significant salary, the money is going to be very tight.

And to those saying we'll trade Gabby in the offseason, that may be, but do you want to trade him with other teams knowing that we have to trade him to get under the cap? Do you want to run the risk of losing one of our RFAs because we can't afford to match an offer sheet?

Play it safe. If they intend to trade Gabby, trade him first, THEN spend the cap savings.
