I will disagree.

We need secondary scoring, at 2.55 Mil for 3 years for 40+ point scoring LW, you can't get a better deal than that.
How much do you think Zucco would sign for?

prob under 2m.. similar to his other contract he got with us when he originally signed, $1.75m...deff wont take a paycut he'll run back over to khl.. if he signs it will be a 2yr 1way deal forsure, but hes worth it..

Hags-Richards-Nash
Zuk-Step-Gaborik
Kreider/Pyatt-Miller-Callahan
Pyatt/Haley-Boyle/Halpern-Powe

Far less than 2.55 per year. Zucc is an RFA without arbitration rights. You need to check out capgeek and see what salary commitments we have next year, as well as which players are up for new contracts. Unless we trade away significant salary, the money is going to be very tight.

And to those saying we'll trade Gabby in the offseason, that may be, but do you want to trade him with other teams knowing that we have to trade him to get under the cap? Do you want to run the risk of losing one of our RFAs because we can't afford to match an offer sheet?

Play it safe. If they intend to trade Gabby, trade him first, THEN spend the cap savings.

They aren't THAT close to the cap for next season. It should be a thought but if they like someone like Stoll or Glencross who has term beyond this season and feel they can be part of the organization for multiple years then the trade is fine. What's the difference between bringing them in and keeping them or going after Clowe or another UFA in the summer?

They ARE that close to the cap for next season - they have to sign RFA's McDonagh, Hagelin, & Stepan

(edit) and Sauer is an RFA, too. Unsure what they'll do about that.

SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $65,232,500; BONUSES: $2,125,000

That's with Gaborik on the roster and having (3) extra players which I doubt they will have. Move Gaborik and you have a TON of room.

Many teams have done it. You know they fit the system and you know they fit in the locker room.

Why is this so important for imports, but isnt viewed as a positive for Brian Boyle, who everyone* seems to love?

*people who actually play hockey for the NY Rangers

The Rangers are asking him to play above his head on the 3rd line. If they want to compete for a Cup, they need to upgrade that position so that they can generate some offense from that line.

The difference is that if you have to trade someone to make room, you will get a lot less for that player if teams know you have to trade him to get under the cap.

I guarantee you that Sather won't trade for any player that has term beyond this year unless near equal term is going the other way.

You didn't add Glencross to that lineup, and still barely fit under the cap. You are also counting on bonuses rolling over into the 2014 season. The bonus cushion is an option, but we are better off not using it. The last thing we need is to carry over 2 mil in cap hits.

You also don't know what cap hits McD, Stepan and Hags will get. They could all be higher than your predictions.

And we don't know what type of deal we'll be able to get for Gabby (or any other player) and how much cap space that will free up.

So adding Glencross's 2.55 mil per year to the mix without subtracting any significant salary is a just a bad idea. We'd be painting ourselves into a corner.

Sather has added term twice since the 05 lockout. Ozolinsh had 1 year remaining. He was a disaster. Nash is the other move. Sather matches up the term and the money. He will trade for a rental which doesn't cost too much or he will match up the contracts.

I get what you're saying but they're both expiring contracts. So the risk and commitment is small (assuming they don't overpay for either).

With what's likely to be a sellers market, and the two declining as it is, I don't think the players we'll be getting will justify the cost. We saw what happened last year with guys like Gaustad. The value of role players shoots through the roof in a thin market.

I'd be more comfortable paying a bit more to acquire someone who can be part of the team moving forward.

If Gaborik starts scoring goals like Gaborik can, there is much less of an onus on the 3rd line to produce offensively.

Im willing to bank on a Gaborik rebound rather than bend over backwards to acquire what you perceive as a 3rd line C upgrade.

They have 11 million to resign Step, Hags and McD.

Sauer will be qualified at his salary.

They have guys like Boyle, Pyatt, Powe and Asham that could moved to free up an additional 5 million.

Not to mention that I do believe they trade Gabby at the draft for another 7.5

all told, they have the potential to be able to free up over 20 million in salary this summer.

Not likely they do, but they have the ability to if absolutely needed.

Even in the Nash deal,Sather took on money but dumped 3 years of Dubinsky on Columbus. Anisimov will be get between $3M-$4M in a long term deal. Matched up the dollars.

Creative accounting.

All the guys you're moving to "free up space" have to be replaced too.

what about gonchar if ottawa falls out of it by trade deadline time? LH but there just arent any good PP options as RH dmen. don't know how much he would cost in assets though. his contract expires following this season and i think he has a no trade clause.

It's the only reasonable option.

From a fan perspective I'm okay with no moves at all this year. I hope they make a run but I don't want them to win this shortbus Cup from a lockout year. So if they aren't making moves that help after this season, don't make any at all.

Of course management will take any Cup they can get and if they feel they have a real shot, will consider rentals, but I hope they are more on the same page we are and only ponying up for young players they'll keep longterm.

We won't be moving Pyatt and Powe. We've seen what happens when the team has a totally incompetent bottom six.

I disagree with this.

The 3rd line HAS to be dangerous offensively even with Nash and Gabby scoring at their career averages.

You want to win in the NHL, you have to have a 3rd line that keeps teams honest.

I don't see them moving Gaborik and I think 2.5/per for Hags and Stepan are pipe dreams. Ryan O'Reilly just got 5/per season and Steps is roughly equal to him statistically. Not saying he goes down the RFA holdout road, but I seriously doubt that 2.5/per gets it done for either of these players. I'm thinking more like 3-3.5/ea for all three of our RFA's which brings us close to 11 million without even considering Sauer and a couple of UFA's we're going to lose.
