Would the Rangers be willing to take on a prospect like that considering they are trying to win now?

I think both are NHL-ready or are close to being NHL ready. Elliot/Barrie will have a 20 game tryout with the Rangers with likely Staal on the left side and if he looks good, the Rangers have found a MDZ replacement in the short term. If they struggled, expect picks/prospects to be moved for Dan Boyle imo.

McDonagh, Girardi, Staal, Stralman.

Stralman has been outstanding. And based on his play and production from prior years, there's nothing to indicate a drop off. He's been a solid player hi whole career.

McIlrath is very close.

Its a move that can be made without hurting the club.

So that makes our bottom pairing Eminger/Gilroy? Then if one of them gets hurt it's back to Stu "I should be taking orders at McDonalds" Bickel?

From the sound of it the Rangers would be looking at adding someone like O'Brien as well who is a 3rd pairing guy.

I would be intrigued by Barrie or Elliot. Would help replenish the system a bit.

Hes been really struggling in the AHL.

Elliott wasn't bad last year, and all together, he hasn't even played a full minor league season. Defensemen take time, especially offensive defensemen who aren't elite.

He's got a lot of talent. He's a pretty good thinker. He still needs to get stronger, but I'd certainly take a chance on him. I think he'd be the best defenseman in our system. Certainly the best offensive defenseman.

Oh I agree, he has a ton of upside. Just saying I dont think the avalanche would be that hesitant to move him with how badly he has struggled.

Sather would probably make a trade for a rental player if he trades DZ for ROR. Would love to get Visnovsky, but I doubt the Isles trade him to the Rangers.

It's hard to replace good defensemen. Heck I'm stalled on giving up Stralman since there are only five reliable defensemen on the team right now. Trade a good one, and then lose one to injury, you might as well wave the white flag.

Brian Boyle could be a Martin Hanzal type for them, he's a proven forward, and play O'Reilly's checking minutes as a shut down center. Very good contract, and Col doesn't have to pay for minutes on top of Statsny and Duchene.

More money to spend on defensemen that way. LaCroix and Sherman have bad blood with MDZ's agency (same reps as O'Reilly), and would have to deal with them on MDZ's upcoming deal less than 18 months from now.

If they are looking for 4 pieces then they are deluding themselves.

A top 9 on center and right wing consisting of Stepan-Nash, Richards-Gáborík, ROR-Cally looks real solid to me

Before I go any further. How credible is this rumor anyway? Is this something that bored "experts" cam up with as a good idea? Or was there an inside scoop?

Did anyone see the NJ game with Girardi out? What happens if we give up Mdz and lose one of the other 3 to a lengthy injury? Then we lose 2 of our top 4 guys.. that makes our D something like Mcd/staal/stralman/eminger/bickel/gilroy. Holy **** del zotto is not being moved for a forward

Came from one of the best in Elliote Friedman, on CBC Hotstove.

Then you look around the locker room and tell O'Reilly, Callahan, Gaborik, Richards, Stepan, Hagelin and Nash that they had better pick up their offense.

Stralman has been getting as much or more ice time than Zotto the past few games.

I think the real top 4 right now is girardi, staal, McD, and Stralman.

Zotto is the #5.

Then they have McIlrath, Skjei, whoever they get back in a trade with the Avs, etc. Eminger isnt a bad player either.

There is merit to the concern of an injury happening to our defense and then it looking laughably bad.

Look at the Sabres when they were going on their cup run, decimated by injuries and it cost them.

IIRC, Vancouver got destroyed by defenseman injuries as well on their cup run.

If one of the top 3 goes down during the playoffs, our chances plummet.

Where would we get extra depth from? There's no depth to be had in the system, even McIlrath (if he was ready for the NHL sometime near the end of the reg season) can't be expected to fill anything more than a 6th D role. If we had Sauer healthy, I'd feel infinitely more comfortable trading away MDZ.

Neither of which are ready. And other than EJ what does Col have? Our D is a strength at the top but all it takes is one injury if we move del zotto to cripple it

They are scoring 3 a game. Losing 2 top d men we would become flyers lite..

That's why someone like O'Brien has to come back. Add him to those 4 plus Gilroy until McIlrath is ready. With the 3 horse that already have on the backend it makes sense to maximize an asset.

MDZ doesn't look comfortable on the right side which means he is going to be a 3rd pairing dman on this team.
