Wow, that is a lot of money for Ryan Callahan. Trade market much not be that good.

Callahan's legacy is going to take a hit if he doesn't live up to that contract. 20 goals a year isn't going to cut it either. He's gunna need his picture with the Cup and I'm not talking about taking a tour of the HHOF.

With Dan Girardi officially back in the fold for the next six years, Glen Sather now has his sights solely set on re-signing his captain despite the two sides being about two-years, $20 million apart.

Larry Brooks at the New York Post says that while Sather has no problem moving Callahan if an extension can't be agree upon by the March 5th trade deadline, the team's preference is to sign the Rochester native.

So much so, that Brooks notes that the Rangers are willing to increase their original offer of five-years, $30 million up to six years, $36 million.

Callahan is said to be looking for a seven-year, $47 million deal.

Fan the MSL flames? Or will Callahan re-sign?

ON THE NEXT GERALDO

I really think we're reading way too much into AV's comments. I am however disappointed that Sather is offering him the moon. Also probably means Stralman is done. Callahan is not an important player anymore on the team THIS YEAR. He will probably suck soon. Please, trade him, don't make the mistake of keeping him and watching him turn into Drury.

As has been said before, $6m for Callahan is exactly what the player is worth.

I disagree, despite everything else he brings to the team, he would NEED to hit at least 50 points to be worth that contract.. and he's done that one time.

now if he hits 50 points+ with everything else he brings? sure i'll take that

I don't think he'll take it. There's no reason he can't get $6.5M @ 7 years via Free Agency, and he doesn't seem to want to be here any more...

Was this the late night deal that Dagoon warned us of?

That's such an arbitrary standard. I could just as easily say that he needs to hit at least 20 goals. I'm not going off of what I think a player is worth, though. I'm going off what precedent says he's worth.

It just seems (from what reports are saying - not always true) that Callahan only cares about that big pay day. He doesn't care where he plays, or what he has to do to get it .... he wants his big pay day. Can't blame the guy really - but hey that's the business side of sports.

If that 6x6 offer is true, then **** Callahan. And **** Sather too for offering it in the first place. I know he'll get that money - if not more on the open market - I still think it's ridiculous.

He's a moron if he says no

I mean there are two sides to this ... I understand this is a business and he has EVERY right to try and get the most bang for his buck and look for his big pay day, BUT at what cost? There are pros and cons with everything ... even if he stays here (around what contract we have been seeing) - he might cripple this team financially to afford to keep more of the youth as they develop OR sign or trade for other impact players to put us over the hump each year. Some players care only about the dollar, some want to win more than getting the biggest deal, and some try to balance it out ... It just seems Callahan is in that first boat unfortunately for us. And this stinks because he is everything you love in a player.

I will be furious if we give Cally 6M per year. I'll hunt Glen down personally if it's for 6 years. Honestly, there shouldn't be a Rangers fan out there that doesn't LOVE Ryan Callahan, but signing him to a 6M cap hit could be the worst thing this team ever does. Redden wasn't in SO different circumstances when we gave him his deal and he had at least been a big star prior to that. Cally is a fringe second liner whose production can be matched by a 3.5-4M player. Are his intangibles going to justify 2M+ more than that? Please, god, no.

This is a pretty outrageous statement for a player that's constantly injured, is always banged up come playoff time, and likely won't eclipse 55 points in any of the next 6 years.

But yea, I can't wait for this Chris Drury 2.0 contract to be signed.
