I mean there are two sides to this ... I understand this is a business and he has EVERY right to try and get the most bang for his buck and look for his big pay day, BUT at what cost? There are pros and cons with everything ... even if he stays here (around what contract we have been seeing) - he might cripple this team financially to afford to keep more of the youth as they develop OR sign or trade for other impact players to put us over the hump each year. Some players care only about the dollar, some want to win more than getting the biggest deal, and some try to balance it out ... It just seems Callahan is in that first boat unfortunately for us. And this stinks because he is everything you love in a player.

Yea I do love the way Cally plays. I think 6 million is too much but I also think that's the max he would get as a ufa but he would get it . It's more than fair so if he says no he doesnt want to be here

Imagine if it was a soft Euro like Zuccarello asking for this much. I wonder how much he'd be crucified by the media by doing so.

reportedly its already been offered, 2. If he doesn't take it, no one can tell me with a straight face he 'wants to be a Ranger"

Just awful. :shakehead

Callahan and his agent played Sather. I don't care if forwards cost more, Girardi is a top pairing D-man and a good one, Callahan is a 3rd liner trending down. Way to go Slats.

I will honestly not be able to contain my disappointment if we re-sign Cally at anything close to the rumored deal. Callahan isn't worth a cent more than 5x5 to me and since I knew he will get more than that, I've already said goodbye to him. I love Ryan Callahan the homegrown, RFA priced, under 28 year old kid who was all heart. That's not who we'd be signing. I want NOTHING to do with a 30 year old 6M Callahan who, as the captain of this team couldn't sign a reasonable deal to help them keep the roster competitive. Nothing.

And I no longer admire his heart right now. Evidently, the reason he plays so hard isn't because he wants to win and it means so much to him. Apparently he plays so hard because he just wants to get paid and doesn't have a third of the skill to justify this kind of salary.

I'm seriously going to puke if we give Callahan a 6/6 contract. I love him, but the man never plays a full season. I hope he saves us from ourselves and rejects the offer. We need to get what we can for him on the trade market.

Yes, I think most of us reasonably would agree with that.

People were saying "I'd be disappointed" so I figured I'd find a different and more specific way to say that. I dunno if TB would go for that package. I still hesitate to believe SY is really trying to trade MSL. Or if he does it'll be for something exorbitant like a 1st, Miller, Callahan and a 2nd.

Well, maybe it prevents us signing Stastny to a ridiculous deal? I mean you know Glen Sather. He needs to give a ridiculous deal to someone or else he disintegrates. IDK, Callahan vs. Stastny.

People would say that all he cares about is the money and would crucify him. Although to be fair, people have said similar about Callahan. I have a feeling if he were Russian he would get destroyed and people would pretend that NA players play for the love of the game while those evil Russians play for money.

Zucc was crucified plenty in the offseason by reportedly demanding 2 million per year (which he denied). Now, that 2 million looks like a huge bargain compared to what Zucc is worth/is going to get in the offseason.

Stastny no question about it.. fills a much bigger need and I could see him having a good career here with Nash and kreider.

I wish we buy out Richards, sign FA Stastny and I guess I'm on-board with the Callahan-MSL trade, which needs some extra assets from our end.

Let's temper the optimism. AV's been confident all along that Callahan would re-sign.

It remains possible that Callahan will back off the seven years, and it remains not likely that Sather will go to seven.

That said, if Sather doesn't get a decent return, he may well just keep his captain for the rest of the season.

I'd much rather have Stastny, at a higher salary even, than Cally at 6M. Not even a question. I really do not want him to sign this deal. I'm fuming already and it's just a rumor.

Exactly.

I'm pretty sure he'd be ripped to shreads if his name was Callahanov.

You don't see another good 2-way 3rd line grinder like Kulemin, who has 3 less goals than Callahan asking for a ridiculous AAV.

This is a pretty outrageous statement for a player that's constantly injured, is always banged up come playoff time, and likely won't eclipse 55 points in any of the next 6 years.

But yea, I can't wait for this Chris Drury 2.0 contract to be signed.

This is the exact problem with all the protests about that contract. $7m when Drury signed is a 75% larger contract than $6m today.

I'm not sure how I feel about 6 x 6. I think 6 million is going to look like way less than it does now in just a few years. I'd rather trade Callahan + for MSL or a good C prospect, but there's a legitimate chance that neither of those deals are possible.

As for people saying that the team won't get better if Cally stays, players grow up, young players get better. Kreider will improve, Zucc could keep improving, Miller will be here and will grow into a solid NHL player, Hagelin still has some room to improve, Brassard is looking like a player he hasn't looked like for a while, McD is still young, Stepan is still young... It's not like the entire team is 32 and they're thinking of resigning everyone and shooting for the moon. This team isn't built half as bad as some posters think it is in my opinion. There's a good bit of room to grow from the solid, second-tier team that they are right now even if nothing changes on paper.

Didn't Drury have a degenerative knee condition? I've yet to come across anybody who knows much at all about this, despite the huge number of people comparing Callahan to Drury over the years. Did Dru lose a genetic lottery or was his knee issue rooted in his play?

Callahan deserves 5 and 5 at most. We are now giving him a full year and 1M more than any team should. He wants a full 2 years and 2M+ more than he should get. If he makes it even 4 years into the contract without breaking down I'll be surprised. Some team will give him 7 x 7+ but the NYR don't have the cap space to sign Callahan for 6M.

My absolute biggest problem is you've got Miller, MZA, Nash all capable of playing RW NOW. Fast is in the wings and there are 3rd line FA every year. It's not a need for the NYR and not something they should spend 6M to address. If Callahan was a 2/3 C then we'd probably need to cough up 6 x 6 at most but he isn't. He's a RW and a beat up, old one. I'm venting.
