I've read that already multiple times in this thread. Rangers make the playoffs, anything can happen.

Of course it can. Thing is, I don't bet on odds that aren't good. Call me a pessimist, but this teams last 20 years have kind of earned me that right.

Right. The question isn't whether it can happen, it's how much you're willing to bet on it happening. That's where the difference of opinion is.

Literally the first thing I said regarding how good this team is "I think they have what it takes to go far, but will ultimately fall short". That is hardly ******** on them; I haven't changed that viewpoint, and I've given my reasons for it.
I don't get how a team can have what it takes to go far, but not have what it takes to win the Cup.

Because the 1997-98 Rangers are very relevant in evaluating the 2013-14 Rangers?

Of course that team has nothing to do with this team. I've been the one saying we should only look at things from the lockout on.

But when your GM, year after year makes the same stupid mistakes, specifically in regards to overpaying and trading for old men who break down in front of our eyes, yes, i think THAT'S relevant.

Regardless, I hope we win the cup and I wake up to an interesting day tomorrow and a good game.

Night all. Nice chatting.

Then we seem to be approaching the exact same though differently.

"I think they have what it takes to go far, but will ultimately fall short" seems perfectly reasonable

I'm not saying we're favorites to win the cup. I don't think anyone is.

But in a game of bounces and Lundqvists vs. Fleurys, it's not an impossibility for us to win 16 ****ing games. 16 out of 28 is all you need. And I think, in a league where you've got the Sabres beating the Sharks, the Rangers sure as hell can win 16 ****ing games.

Just throwing out "Anything Can Happen!" is such a stupid oversimplification of our point.

We're saying it's not black and white. There's grey. We're also saying we can learn from teams other than the 1 that happened to win the Cup that year.

Blasphemy!

Don't you know that if you're not first you suck and need to be shamed till eternity? How else will I be able to brag to all my friends about how much of a competitor I am and how much I love winning?! There is nothing but winning. Extenuating circumstances such as a bad call or an injury to the starting goaltender, you say? I say WINNING! Also, FREEDOM and 'MURICA! But most importantly WINNING!

OK. Most of the teams since the lockout have nothing to do with this current team, either.

the thing that annoys me is the "cup or bust people"

If you gave me the choice: Trade Callahan for a prospect + 2nd but we lose in the first round

or keep him and let him walk in the offseason BUT get to say.. the conference finals this year and lose.

you don't have to win a cup to have a successful year. for me, its about experiecing and enjoying a playoff run. a run to the CF will be great. there will be great playoff wins that we'd remember for our entire lives. thats what being a fan is about, not trading all UFAs for prospects and giving up on any season where you aren't first in the conference.

Your avatar literally made me spit out my water on my girlfriend at the diner. Which also made me get caught trying to sneak-read hfboards at the diner.

Well done.

I think the main goal should be to build something where you are in the mix for a long time.

I wouldn't mind trading Callahan for a top prospect or 1st + good prospect

Our healthy top 9 is fine, and we could add to the farm

I'd argue that Sather has done just that.

I know some people think the move is to TANK in years were you are average (the times we've finished 7th or 8th, lets say) but a team with a FRANCHISE GOALTENDER should not be stripping down assets for prospects. Especially now with Hank over the age of 30. You take a run every year when you have a horse like Hank.

Our early season woes made everyone throw this season out the door after ten games. Before the season started we were pegged by many to be battling with Pitt for top spot in the Metro. If we start the regular season better, and play how we have been recently, a lot of you would be singing a different tune.

I keep waiting for this team to go back to that early season team struggling to stay above .500; they haven't. I believe we are a top 3 team in the east. We aren't an 8th seed. Anything can happen is a stretch as a 8th seed, but not as a top 3 team in your conference. MSL on this team would be huge. Throw MSL on a line with one of our "2C's" and they'll produce like a 1C. He is that good.

Ironically the guy defending Sather has the handle of Fire Sather.

I totally agree. I think people forget how terrible the dark years were.

Its funny, I can't say I have an issue with him since the '05 lockout. Then again, I am someone who grew up during those dark years and the 05-06 team was the first real time as a fan where the Rangers were in the playoffs, so maybe I am just happy with playoff hockey. I can count 96-97 playoffs, but those are really my first memories of watching.
