Really? Cause he's scored 20+ once in his career, his average is 16.5 goals a season. It's not a good return, and he's not a particularly useful player in this system. He's a less skilled Callahan. The plus better be pretty good. He also only averages 54 games a season.

who are you referring to?

Stewart?

28 goals in 09-10

28 goals in 10-11

18 goals in 48 games last season.

Overall plays in 92% of his teams games during his career

just asking

I wonder what we'd have to add to Callahan to pry Shattenkirk away... he's my main target on the Blues. More likely than Oshie, anyways.

I honestly haven't seen anything like this in all the years I've posted and lurked here. Generally, if you say something as innocuous as "I don't think this team can advance beyond the 2nd round" or "they aren't contenders," you don't get attacked for it or accused of being negative.

You and I must be reading very, very different forums then.

Maybe that their GM and the player in question recently got off a series of flights lasting 15 hours has something to do with it.

However, on the other hand, since the trade hasn't gone down yet Boomer is a liar, idiot, attention *****, jerk, murderer, rapist, and told me Santa clause isn't real.

Works both ways, eh?

Anyway the point was, if this isn't true I can't see someone within the Tampa Bay organization not coming out and saying it isn't.

Not to get back into this discussion but...

Why?

Because we will be unlike every other team that has handed out a "too-rich and too-long" contract and been able to get put from under it?

In all seriousness, if I'm blanking on all the lousy contracts teams have been stuck with, please list them because it looks to me that all of the contracts people complain about do NOT come back and haunt the teams that entered into them. And now that teams can eat some salary in deals, it'll be easier to get rid of "bad contracts".

And I understand there are cap ramifications but with the cap guaranteed to be increasing, Callahan's cap hit is going to be of less and less consequence as each season passes. In the end the Rangers might be overpaying $1 or 2M for a few years. It's hardly a hit that can't be made up elsewhere.

what price are you ok with, top range.
I want callahan to resign, almost to the point where I realize Id probably overpay for him if I was making this decision right now.

I'm wondering why he's constantly being brought up, still, without any indication that he a) was ever actually in play for us for Ryan Callahan and b) is still being sought after by the Rangers.

No reporter ever confirmed that Callahan and Stewart were products of the same trade proposal. The report was that the Blues were interested in Callahan and that the Rangers had been scouting Stewart. No clarification was given if it indeed was for each other, or the Rangers were interested in Stewart independently of Callahan. Then speculation arose as Dreger tweeted that he believed that Stewart for Callahan would be a fair deal. Zippay tweeted back at him saying that the Rangers would certainly need more. Dreger tweeted back saying he didn't believe the Blues would offer more because Cally is a rental. All speculation. Dreger has a TSN label associated with his name and suddenly speculation for him becomes fact for people on this board.

So again the entire rumor on him was derived from educated speculation. And there has been no such follow up in over a month between the Rangers and the Blues in the media. No new rumors. No new reaffirmations that a package would actually still consist Stewart for Callahan.

2/25/14: 8:15AM: Dreger believes that the St. Louis Blues are more focused on acquiring Ryan Callahan than Ryan Miller. (TSN 1050)

He's brought up because it's a far more realistic move than St. Louis. It keeps getting brought up by people paid for getting that information.

The Blues are going to move Stewart. The Rangers are going to move Callahan. The Blues want Callahan with Backes.

Connect the dots.

Its fun to play fantasy land with St. Louis, but it isn't realistic. The Rangers aren't and shouldn't sacrifice prospects and picks to get a year out of St. Louis.

I think the lack of understanding comes from the Rangers rarely being in this position. When is the last time they sold off players that were waiting for big paydays?

When assigning value, there needs to be an understanding that the acquiring team isn't just getting Mr. Intangibles Ryan Callahan, they're getting Ryan Callahan for a couple of months with a huge payday hanging over his head.

Agreed. I think it also stems from the fact that there is a very real emotional attachment to Callahan as a Ranger, and people need to understand that emotional attachment is not something that can be used to drive up the asking price. "He's our heart and soul" isn't a bullet point that a GM is going to look at and say, "Oh, well let me add another prospect to the deal to soothe your pain."

Which part? The part where St. Louis might be on the block?

Or the part where the Rangers can acquire him for a fantasy package?

Two very different things.

You and I must be reading very, very different forums then.

I've seen people get attacked year after year for saying "this is not a playoff team" or "this is a bad hockey club." Seeing posters get attacked for saying "I don't think this team can reach the ECF" is a fairly recent phenomenon, something that has arisen only in the past year or so. We have barely even entertained the notion of this team missing the playoffs on this board since the team's turnaround in Dec/Jan - that's usually where the negativity argument comes into play in previous years other than 2012.

Connecting the dots is not "reliable information". I'm sorry.

Two very different things.

The former. That's the only part that would concern Tampa Bay is the rumors around MSL and Steve Y. (leading him to be on the block) If it didn't have that element I don't think they would bat an eye at the rumor at all.

Because, if I had to guess, there probably is a rift.

Doesn't mean hes going to get handed to the Rangers on a silver platter for an expiring contract.

Here's a statement:sarcasm:

St. Louis arrived back in Tampa on Monday but did not practice with the team. Tampa Bay did not take to the ice on Tuesday and St. Louis is not required to be at practice Wednesday when the Lightning take to the ice in Brandon before departing for Nashville to open a four-game road trip on Thursday.

“They are rumors, but I don’t really know where that stuff comes from,’’ Stamkos said. “Obviously people can speculate about what goes on with him not being on the Olympic team, but I think the gold medal will heal a lot of things. I think that’s where people are jumping on that bandwagon, and New York is being thrown around because they have some guys they need to re-sign or get rid of, so people will say that Marty lives in New York (actually Greenwich, Conn.) and that’s why they make the connection. But I don’t think any of it’s true.’’

yup it same thing for the people who say they can. attacked or jeered

It just blows my mind how people continue to crap on names that have actually been leaked as possible trade targets, and that they have no problem continually posting fantasy deals like getting Jaskin or Toffoli and a first round pick for Callahan.

Talk about a double standard. "I don't like that guy! Stop talking about him!"

He would help... if we got him independently for Callahan.

Would he be a good addition to this team? There's a higher probability that he would be a good addition than a bad addition.

But at the expense of Callahan.

Terrible move. And if it happens, many on this board will be disappointed with what they wished for.

Trading our most consistent player who leads by that example in place for a guy whose picture might as well be in the dictionary next to the word inconsistent.
I think you may be overrating Callahan in that regard:

EDIT: To be clear: that's Callahan in the red, and Stewart the blue
