In his first practice with the team since winning a gold medal with Canada at the Olympics, St. Louis acknowledged he has had discussions with Yzerman about his future with Tampa Bay. Beyond that, he declined to elaborate.

"The only thing I can say about that is I've had conversations with Steve on my future here," St. Louis said. "Out of respect for my teammates I think that's all I'm going to say about that. I'm not going to get into answering this question every day. I've had conversations with Steve about my future here. Those conversations are between me and Steve."

Preeeeeetty sure that's just a reference to Staple's earlier comment that he had requested a trade a month or so back. They're just confirming that he did in fact - at one point - request a trade.

I don't know, with what MSL has said today and what Yzerman hasn't said, I think this trade rumor has officially gained some traction.

The crazy thing is how being GM of team Canada really put Yzerman in a bad situation. He really pissed off a player on his NHL team by not including him in the initial roster, but even if I don't agree with that decision, I think he still needs to be able to make that kind of decision without being essentially blackmailed into including players.

I also wouldn't be surprised if this is also about Marty looking for a contract extension and Yzerman not being willing to give him one.

That's a REALLY good point. Kinda makes the Olympic team GM job a lot less desirable than it used to be...

Yeah, as I've said before, even if NHL players play in 2018, I don't think you'll see any NHL GMs managing Olympic teams.

Three things are clear at this point:

1. MSL was and probably still is available for the right price.
2. Sather offered Callahan in a 1-for-1.
3. That wasn't enough for Yzerman.

Rangers trade Gaborik to recoup assets and gain depth.

Rangers potentially acquire St.Louis to add to the top 6.

I think you have to consider the Rangers as a serious contender this year with the defense coming together and Henrik getting his game together as well.

i have so much respect for marty st.louis, this guy has balls, how many players would have the balls to request a trade, after not being chosen to team canada, this guy has the courage to be like **** you to a legend like steve yzerman, trade me

Playing elite NHL hockey at his size didn't get your respect to begin with ? ;)

hypothetically, if the trade was Cally for MSL, what do you think the lines would be?

MSL is listed as a RW/LW, but i'm pretty sure he's known as a RW more than a left wing...im sure someone could correct me on that if im wrong.

if it were me, i'd try to keep the Pouliot - Brassard - MZA line together.

Then, I'd change the lines up entirely, going with something like this...

Kreider - Richards - MSL

Hagelin - Stepan - Nash

Or you could try to change things up and move guys around to different sides...

MSL - Richards - Nash

Kreider - Stepan - Hagelin

Killer speed on that 2nd line, but Stepan would be likely too slow to keep up with the other 2....

interesting regardless.

as a "win now" trade, Cally for MSL is a huge move. For the future, it's incredible stupid.

I could see both sides of this argument.

Anyone else who felt disrespected by their boss.

As he should.

i think 1 thing people have to acknowledge is that Yzerman has absolutely no reason whatsoever to simply trade MSL away, regardless of his requests.

The Jackets kept Nash, which was a very similar situation in terms of potentially forcing a trade, but, more importantly, the Bolts are almost assuredly a playoff team, why would Yzerman trade away his top healthy player, even if it is for a captain/heart and soul kinda guy like Cally?

It would be 1 thing if cally was cost controlled for a few years, but it's the exact opposite.

if i were a Tampa fan, i'd be PISSED if the trade was MSL for Cally.

As a Rangers fan, I'd be pretty unhappy because, while it certainly upgrades us today, it does NOTHING for us for tomorrow, and, unless Henrik decides to go into God-mode in the playoffs, or the other teams around us have some crazy injuries, this team isn't winning the cup.

Yzerman is going to be in Detroit for Lidstroms retirement ceremony on March 6. The day after the deadline. I guess that rules out Detroit as a destination.

In hypothetical land if that is the case and Yzerman has already slighted MSL twice by leaving him off team Canada ignoring his demand for a trade would only cause more distention. Then you have to wonder how his other players might look at that, it's not as if MSL is a hired gun he's been their for a long long time.

To me, ideally MSL would slot with Richards and continue to be a 3rd unit.

AV loved the first two lines; Nash had a 12-game goal streak (or something close to it) just before the break; and the Zuc line was on a real roll;

who knows with Zuc out what happens temporarily; MSL is a pretty damned good replacement LOL.
But no need to upset or reset all the lines if deal happens.
and I don't want to see Richards get more ice. Some added offense from a 3rd line with MSL would be fine. Most teams cannot match that depth.

Btw, MSL public acknowledgement likely means its a matter of hours and not days.
The overall noise level way up today with Dreger, Kypreos, Staple and now MSL.

Don't know what else could happen for a tipping point to be reached.

Blasphemous! Don't you know you always do everything you possibly can to maximizes your chances of winning this year - as slim as they may be - long-term consequences be damned?

If the Rangers do get St. Louis, I think you'd see Nash shift to the left to play with him.

i completely disagree, how can you have st.louis in the dressing room, when his teammates know he demanded a trade, and wants out, it will create a toxic enviroment around the team, which can only be detrimental to their playoff aspirations, also it would have a tremendously negative impact on st.louis and stamkos's relationship and their play on the ice too
