I just kind of realized I don't see any team committing that kind of money to Callahan that isn't deep into rebuilding.

Off the top of my head I could see Callahan being attractive to San Jose, Minnesota, Detroit, Washington, Dallas, Montreal, the NYI (ugh!)...and I would think Tortorella would be pushing for mgt. to find a way to add Callahan...not to mention that the pricetag might be too high but I wouldn't rule out Nashville. You know the GM loves Callahan and Legwand's $4.5M could be off the books.

That's 8 or 9 teams right there that aren't cellar dwellers. Callahan will be sitting pretty come Summer 2014 if he becomes a free agent.

I am really not buying into any comparison between Callahan and Lundqvist. Reality is a biatch but the reality is that Callahan is dialling for dollars and Lundqvist wants to be a Ranger.

It is really simple.
A player makes a choice. They will, or they will not, lessen their salary demands in order to stay where they are.
It's okay if Callahan does not want to continue to be a Ranger more than he wants to test the market.

It is incumbent on Rangers fans to realize this, and simply judge it accordingly. Trading Callahan is the best option.

John Vogl â€Â@BuffNewsVogl 1m
Sabres GM Tim Murray on goalie Ryan Miller: "Our goal right now, I think on both sides, is to pursue a proper trade."

Is that a team official responding directly in the press to trade rumors?

I do believe it is

Who is John Vogl?

Didn't Kramer buy his car? The actor or the dentist?

Hemsky should only be a contingency plan for if Zuccarello all of a sudden doesn't want to play here. Even as a rental, he would slot in on Brassard and Poo's line. That would be a disaster at ES in their own end. Figuring Callhan gets traded, that is.

I would do a 4th rounder or less. After seemingly hitting on two third rounders this past draft, this FO may hold a bit more value in those high picks.

I like Hemsky and he is a very good hockey player. He is coming back very well from his injury problems and is playing really good hockey. People not watching EDM read way too much into his stats, who would produce in the role he is in for EDM? I think Hemsky could be real good in a Ryder for Boston or Versteeg for Chicago type of role on a contender.

But, and the same applies for MSL, how small do we want to be at RW? It seems like Hemsky doesn't make any sense as long as we have Zucc. At least not with Step, BR and Brass ar center ice.

Agreed. Two way play up the middle and size and speed up the wings is how this team is looking to be constructed. Nash, Zuccarello, Callahan, and Dorsett is among the best RW depth in the league. It's a shame we'll lose one to free agency. The replacement will be getting 3rd line ES minutes. Fast would be perfect if he bulked up a bit more, but he's close. Ideally I would like someone with a little more size in that spot.

Some thoughts:

Semin would be perfect for that RW spot to replace Callahan, if he can be had at a reduced salary. I'm wondering what his deal is lately though. There were some nights when he played with Washington when I wondered if Semin or Ovechkin was the better overall player.

A Richards buyout may not be as foregone of a conclusion as most think. The best option this offseason is to sign Stastny to fill his minutes. However, a team like Calgary will throw big money at him to be their top line center. Depends if he wants money or to win a cup. With the cap going up, Richards' salary would be an easier pill to swallow. He's good for at least 50 points for another two years I think. Even into his late 30's, he'll rack up power play points and be good for at least 30-40 points. That's what an average 2nd line center gives you. His skating can't possibly get worse, that's already shot.

Callahan's as good as gone. Whether he goes to Tampa or to a team that offers up something better remains to be seen.

Girardi will get signed. The gap between him and what Sather is offering isn't too large.

St Louis not required to practice Wednesday; will Cally?

Not much new in story, though it is a good recap of events.

But for Floridians interested at all in hockey, just waking to their morning papers and seeing a full page piece blaring 'MSL could go',
its as if groundwork was being laid, like Mr X said LOL..

“I was more worried about him not making the Olympic team than I am him hearing rumors about Marty being moved,’’ Cooper said. “I think it is a natural for the next 10 days for these rumors to start, and I’m surprised we haven’t heard more of them. The fact that they are really isolated on players is interesting to me, but aside from that, I coach the team. I don’t brush up the rumors or am I the one pulling the trigger on the trades, my pay grade is not high enough to have to deal with that.

“I’ll start worrying if I hear my name come up in trade rumors.’’

Boy, yet another Tampa team source saying, "I really don't know." This time it's the coach. The coach doesn't know whether or not the rumors have merit, or he just isn't able to comment?

Also, oh look, a member of the team is making a statement about rumors. Unfortunately for Tampa fans, he isn't denying them.

Stamkos is the closest person to the source of all this who has said he doubts it is true, but it is still just doubt, and he doesn't know for sure either.

Going on 48 hours, the rumor is still running, both legs fully in tact.

Yeah but it's got shin splints.

Use this logic:

a) Nothing is said = probable a rumor without merits.

b) "The rumors are completely false. I laugh at them when I see them. How do people come up with these things?" = There have been a lot of talk but nothing seem to materialize.

c) "I don't know / I hope nothing is done / Doesn't make any sense" = There are at the moment serious talks to pull it off.

only team I see coming close to Callahan's outlandish demands is Buffalo. have fun

thats the funny part...people act like he wants to sign there cause its his hometown but really its cause they are going to offer him an insane amount of $$...

its like last summer when parise and suter both wanted to 'go home' and play for the wild...then the wild had to pay them $100 mil each

I fully expect today to be a lot less quiet since it's basically today or never IF they want him to play Thursday. Not saying it cannot happen after today, of course.

Edit: Well I guess if it broke early tomorrow as well, he could still play.

Based on the last couple years I fully expect to see movement around the league today, a week from the deadline has been pretty active in recent years. I think teams would rather end any trade talk surrounding their teams and get the new players acclimated sooner rather than later.

Why the hell would the Rangers be interested in Hemsky? No.

Still no new rumors on Callahan or Girardi. The longer this goes on, the more I am starting to believe both will be re-signed and this is Sather's way of trying to lower their demands.

Oh god, please tell Hemsky is just speculation by posters here and it has no actual legs.

I don't know...cashbag cally said they we're giving a hometown discount

I haven't heard or seen anything regarding Hemsky to NYR. I think it was just brought up by a single poster trying to gauge interest. Honestly, I wouldn't mind him if he came extremely cheaply, but nothing more than a mid-round pick. EDM will get more than that for him though. His contract has hurt his value in prior deadlines, but as a pending UFA and pure rental, I could see him returning a 2nd or 3rd rounder, which we certainly shouldn't be paying for him.

I wouldn't move any picks for him. This team needs to stop giving away picks.

OTOH, most trades happen the hrs before the deadline. Certainly not all, but many of them...

If Slats is bluffing them, its getting a bit late for anyone to budge. I don't see the price going down for these guys.

I personally have a big problem with the length of the deals Slats are offering. AAV the first 3-4 years is the big problem from my point of view, not the length of them. Especially not if Slats could sell the NMC turning into a NTC and then front-load the deal as much as possible. My reasoning is that with the cap sky-rocketing, many more teams than today will become budget teams. Either Cally and Girardi will be injured and go out on LTIR, or they will be able to play and if they can play we would always have the option to unload them if they are on a front-loaded deal. In that scenario, its quite possible that a high cap hit will benefit them, not hurt them. With teams trying to get above the celling at least. Under 8 years deal, we would have no problems front-loading these players so that they make less than 4m late in the deals and still get real good money early in them. To me that seems like the by far best options. 8 years. Get the AVV for Girardi closer to 5m and the AAV for Cally to 6m. Front-load the deals to an maximum. NMC the first 3-4 years and then limited NTC the last 4-5 years.

The cap is 63m now. It will be closer to 100-120m when we have to start to worry about these players age. If they by that time is paid less than or 4m, we aren't stuck with them if they can play. If they can't play, they go on LTIR.

No matter what anyone tells me, I have a VERY hard time seeing the cap double in 5 years. That seems ludicrous.
