With all of this talk of Callahan, what about the rest of the UFA's?

Girardi
Stralman
Moore
Boyle
Pouliot

Who is staying? Still no contracts finalized. Are they going to let all of hem walk to July 1st? Can they not multi-task?

Well, thats the problem with all decisions having to go through a 70 year old Sather. Im sure a guy like Gorton is working hard behind the scenes to reconcile these situations, but the buck stops with Sather. How much do we think he has left in the tank to do the necessary work?

So how long do we think boomer will keep this going, I love the guy and his show but this smells an awful lot like a ploy and I don't blame him for having some fun and doing it. How many of you went out of your way to listen to the show this morning to get the juicy details that never came. Callahans getting traded that's a foregone conclusion, why not drum up some rumors and **** with his 100K+ twitter followers, genius.

Bc that makes you a clown who plays clown games

Not much honestly, but this situation is beyond horrid. So many UFA's, no decisions on anyone, just wait and see? Do they not want any of these guys back?

What I find hilarious is the people that swear we were a cup contender in 11-12 and think we'll definitely not be one even if we add MSL who for my money is not far off from Gaborik that year, plus we have Nash and Zucc. We'd have more offensive firepower and our D would actually have 6 NHLers and McDonagh and Stralman are much better this time around. On paper this team with MSL is better than that one AINEC. Of course games aren't played on paper, but the certainty that we're still not contenders now but were then is amazing to me.

You forgot the most important one, Zuccarello.

That's a question that would have been better asked circa 1992, maybe 1993. I think the current contractual situation with most of the players on the roster is yet another indication of terrible mismanagement by Sather.

He's a 3rd liner on the Rangers currently.... He has declining point production and plays a grinding style. He also isn't needed on the PP anymore with the emergence of Pouliot. So he's basically a weak ES player and average PKer.

You lost all credibility with me with that comment. Not that should make you lose sleep. But thats a nail in the coffin

I'm worried about this as well...

Personally, I think all 5 need to be given very modest raises, though G and Stralman will get much more fluffy raises.

They've all done well, and a few have excelled immediately after the coaching change (Stralman, Moore, Boyle come to mind).

Well theres these little things called evidence and hindsight. The '11-12 team won 51 games, 1st in the east, made it to the conference finals. Easy to say they were a contender.

We just dont know yet with this team. Theyve been wildly inconsistent, and who knows what effect trading their captain will have. We'll see what happens.

But as others have said, this hail mary for St. Louis stinks of desperation. Hes certainly trying to make this team a legitimate contender right now - with no eyes toward the future of the franchise.

I still question why Tampa would want Callahan, but I do think the Rangers have pieces to trade them if they wanted to make a deal for MSL.

Would Hagelin/Kristo/mid round pick for MSL get it done?

thinking we should move on from the MSL talk. That just wont happen for a UFA like Cally

This is going to be a nutty 10 days if BOTH Cally and Girardi go. I imagine they give in to Girardi but not to Cally in the end

That's possible, but if MSL retires after next year for whatever reason, then they would be losing a skilled all-around 28 year old for a year and a half of St Louis + the ability to sign someone else whose own team didn't think was good enough to sign themselves?

I'd prefer some younger talent, although MSL would be a great return. I am still iffy on where the grit and size is going to ft in this line-up. Nash. Kreider. No one else? And I wouldn't consider Nash physical AT ALL.

Or said player wants to be in a different location, or on a specific team. Just bc a players leaves, it doesn't mean his old team didn't want to keep him. Suter, Parise most recent examples

I agree with everything you just said, unless there is something legit about Callahan re-signing and the Rangers re-couping a pick when he does so. If TB was the team they gave the opportunity to talk a contract with and they have something finalized and they can turn Callahan re-signed into St Louis for this year and next + 1st '14 I'd be okay with that.

There needs to be both an eye to the future and the present in any deal. Make sure they get both.

Maybe Yzerman is a HUGE Callahan fan. He made a very smart move adding Filpulla in the off-season as their #2 center. 2-way forward.

A surprisingly fair post by you. Did someone steal BRB's login? ;)

I'm sorry, but I think you're conflating posters' opinions to fit your own narrative. I don't think that a lot of posters who are against this trade thought that the '11-'12 squad was a world-beater. Speaking for myself personally:

1) I didn't think that the '11-'12 squad was a serious contender (although of course I was rooting for them like hell once the deadline passed and the roster was set).

2) I don't think this team becomes a serious contender over the league powerhouses by adding another RW, no matter how good he is.

Regardless, I have no interest in building a one-and-done 5th or 6th best team that has a shot of winning out through a fortuitous tournament run and then sinking back to the middle of the pack next year or the year after. I want to build a consistent contender.

Not sure how it would make St. Louis reconsider a trade request.

However, on the NYR side, I think theres plenty of reason to suggest the leak came as more of a shot across the bow to Callahan -- they are serious about trading him.

How doesn't it.

If a trade is agreed upon and its now up to him to sign off on it.

it gives him a chance to reconsider. and it puts pressure on him to do so, bc they have a trade completed.

Giving Callahan a 3 year deal was a garbage move, which has only been compounded by acquiring more players with contracts running out this summer.

A 5 or 6 year deal at the age of 26 would have taken Callahan to a point where a better decision could have been made about how much more he has left.
