Stastny is making 6.6 now. There's no reason to think that he's going to take a pay cut of any sort to sign anywhere.

Additionally, elite front line centers are getting contracts that start with an 8 not 7. Stastny will not an 8 to start his annual salary.

Finally, If Richards was a 28 year old player making 6.66 per producing the numbers he is producing now, I would have no issues keeping him for the next 6-7 years.

Stastny being a better player today, will and should get more in terms of annual dollars than Richards. He's a more competent and reliable player in defensive zone.

People keep mentioning that with the cap going up, paying a guy like Boyle 2.5mil wouldn't be such an awful thing..so what's saying that Stastny, in a higher cap world, won't get 8mil? Especially from a guy like Sather who has money to throw around.

Made the post in the Olympic thread, but I'm almost kind of serious.

Go trade for Granlund. Do whatever it takes. Stepan, Miller, 1st round picks, McIlrath, whoever. Just get him. He is exactly what this team needs.

You all got a good look at Stastny, the USA's 4th line center during this tournament. That's not a 8 million dollar player.

the lack of respect for Stepan is ridiculous on here.

Granlund is going no where anyway. Miller will be great for NYR as well. McIlrath likely just a 6th Dman that is tough but he should make the team soon

You guys all know where I stand on JT Miller.
I would prefer alternate options on moving our expiring guys. Not clear yet what best offers truly are.

With that, my standby suggestion is to consider this:
Sabres fan very strong push for JT Miller, including Pysyk, and not without Miller.

So deadwood/head count/cap balance aside,
JT Miller + Callahan to Buffalo
for
Pysyk + Ott

Ott + Cally both UFA, gives us inside look, possible offer.
Pysyk, like 20 something (24th? from memory) overall, and RD, all we wanted from MDZ and did not get, makes options for Girardi MUCH easier.

While dif in talent is not huge, I don't do this when we should be trying to build at C otherwise, but this might be nec. if we wanna get best value for Callahan...

His huge $$$ demands are a concern.
If Sabes are amenable, let's be open minded.

If all he costs is $$ and we have moved on from Cally and may be able to squeeze $5m for 1 year, what about Gaborik for another year at RW?

Not sure but might return if our team better poised for cup run.

Good weekend to all

I think Slats finds a way to get both Callahan and Girardi signed, I don't think either are dealt leading up to or at the trade deadline. These guys don't grow on trees, and I still believe we can win with them. I think we get both signed at some point.

As we get closer, I'm thinking the exact opposite. If we don't here an announcement on Tuesday about Girardi, that probably means very little was done during the break. I cringe, knowing how Sather operates... I think he'd keep both for the playoffs, and then be caught holding his dick come UFA, 'cause no one gives up much a week before the draft. Girardi probably would get ~6-6.5 for 6 years... Callahan will most likely hit UFA, no one will sign him, so he'll have to drop his price... and maybe he'd end up with us for like 5.5M. But probably not.

If Gabs is willing to take a paycut (considering all the lost time), he may be worth $5M...

For what it's worth, I would rather have him than Callahan in the RW position.

Problem is, you're not getting him from CLB unless they are eliminated from contention before the deadline, which at this point looks unlikely. In the event that he meshes well with CLB, he may very well sign an extension before July 1st.

Unless you trade Cally for Gabs, but I'm not sure that is a feasible trade

I am out on Stastny. The Rangers really need to add speed to the center position.

Call me crazy but I would kick the tires on something along the lines of Callahan for Jack Johnson if I am dealing with Columbus.

Johnson covers the Rangers butt if Girardi is traded and/or Marc Staal walks next season. Johnson also has the right kind of contract to pick up (makes less than McDonagh cap hit wise) and for some reason always seems to be on or close to the trade block.

This also allows you to trade Girardi or even Staal for a forward. In theory it is easier to trade a defenseman for a forward than a forward for a forward; you might be able to get a better player than Chris Stewart for example.

Also I feel like Callahan's stock is definitely up post Olympics so it'll be an interesting week and a half.

I agree about Granlund, disagree about Stepan.

He's not a 1C, and I would package him for one who will be his entire career in the NHL.

Legit 1C
Miller
Lindberg/Brassard
Boyle/Moore

Or if you didn't have to move Stepan, and it took Miller instead:

Legit 1C
Stepan
Lindberg/Brassard
Boyle/Moore

My feelings on the C issue with this team. Stastny is not the answer, and unless they plan on magically drafting that #1C by moving up or getting lucky, they need to trade for one.

Granlund has done nothing yet. Would be a downgrade at this pt in time.

No it is not.

GMs knew what they were getting with Callahan before the Olympics began.

Eh, I don't know. Cally's had kind of a down season, so his performance on the world stage in the Olympics may have served to settle some doubts that he's still the same player that GMs knew and loved from years past.

Drive to XXX.

If the Callahan and Girardi trades go through, here is what I would want back.

Callahan to StL.

Stewart, Jaskin, Edm 2nd.

The difference bet StL's 1st and the EDM 2nd could be 2 spots. Let them have their 1st to play with so they can trade for Miller.

Taking Stewart gives them cap room this year and next, so StL has a shot of re-signing Cally. Jaskin is a good prospect to have.

Girardi to ANA

Vatenen, DSP, 1st.

There's the added 1st. Vatenen at this point is a bottom 6 defenseman, and is a dominant big ice player. I like his game a lot but the Rangers need someone to handle the jumbos in the east. G has done that admirably, and I think Klein can do that to a certain degree, but Kevin Klein is going to handle 20 min a night in a 7 game series against Neal or Lucic. Is McIlrath ready? I don't know, but Vatenen fits that offensive RHD that this team has been missing. He just isn't proven in the NHL, but I like his game. I think he makes it. Very smart, great wheels, shot selection.

The question is what is he? Is he a plus version of Ryan Ellis, or is he closer to a poor man's Erik Karlsson? His NHL games with ANA suggest he is more Ryan Ellis, while his Olympic games suggest he is a great big ice hockey player.

DSP is a grinder, a 10-12 min a night guy that is a built athlete. He is effective in his role because he will wear teams down low as it takes some strength and effort to defend against him. He has shown some signs of offensive ability.

Granlund has done nothing yet. Would be a downgrade at this pt in time.

He just outplayed every USA center in the Olympics, all 4 of whom got ice time over Derek Stepan. The entire tournament. He helped lead Finland to bronze. Short tournament? Yeah okay, but he has also shown signs the entire year with Minnesota. It was a coming out party, not a flash in the pan.

He would certainly not be a downgrade at 1C over Stepan. Not now, and definitely not going forward. Honestly they're not even the same kind of player.

I would be absolutely shocked if he ends up a lesser player than Stepan.

I love how people overrated so many players because of a 12 day tournament. Granlund has been great, sure, but anyone can get hot over a 7 game tournament.

Should an NHL team go out and sign Masalskis or Laco because they were somewhat lights out in Sochi. How about Ozolinsh. He was great out there, get him back in blue.

Based on 7 games, you guys want to trade the farm for Granlund. That is EXTREMELY short-sighted.

I'm not saying he won't be a good or even great player. But Stepan, Miller, a couple firsts for an unproven commodity. Come on.

Stepan is so insanely underrated here due to his bad season it's becoming unbearable. He is being asked to play and carry a 1st line when in reality he is a second line 1B center.

You don't trade those. They are important. We already dumped Anisimov. You need STRENGTH down the middle to win championships. Trading those chips away is a recipe for failure.

Dude, neither of those two teams make those trades.

Granlund had a great tournament but he strikes me as the exact type of player that sees his game jump up a few notches on the big ice.

Not really disagreeing and I like him as a prospect. But I would need to see more in NA, in terms of consistently being able to make plays with less time & space before ponying up a huge package.

Apples to Oranges. A young, cost controlled, future #1C already playing in the NHL versus has-beens and never was.

I wouldn't trade both Stepan AND Miller, but I'd move one of them plus whatever, to get back a future #1C.

It's unrealistic yeah, but they need to find a #1C, high impact forward. Where else are they getting it? Stepan? No, he's not that, never will be. Miller will be a very good #2 in my estimate. Still not the #1 they need. You harp on the importance of center depth, well the most important center is the first one.

McIlrath is not ready and Klein absolutely is not able to take a #1 RHD spot.

If we traded Girardi and didn't get a RHD back, our best option would be slotting McD over there, moving Staal up and going with a D Core like this:

Staal - McD
Moore/Allen - Klein
Moore/Allen - Stralman.

Don't see that D group getting through multiple rounds in the playoffs.
