Had you said "we should look for Jussi Jokinen type pickups" (i.e. young, cheap, low-risk/high-reward guys who can contribute in the future) you would have gotten a different response.

But you didn't. You advocated going for 42-year-old, nostalgic retread Jagr. He would be the very definition of a short-term, PO run rental, a classic example of sell future assets for a one-time "hope he can gear it up for one more" guy who would be gone in June. And regardless of who it would be or what would be done, not every prospect can make the team. Not every one of kristo, fast, lindberg, and miller can make the team. Some will have to go. People complained we held onto Del Zotto too long....we do the same thing with these "prospects"

Either you believe you're a legitimate contender, in which case you can seriously pursue rentals, or you don't in which case any rental is frivolously flushing assets down the toilet. Period.

2nd round picks and Fasts and Kristos have meaningful value. 4th round picks, even 6th round picks have value (Callahan was a 4th, Hagelin a 6th). Are the odds great? No. But you don't waste them for what you believe is an ill-fated run. Rather, you collect more of them from the guys who are going for it in order to increase your overall odds of finding another Callahan or Hagelin, because while the odds for each individual pick aren't great, they get better and better for a draft overall, the more picks you include.

Also, if you don't think your team is championship worthy, what is the point of propping it up to win one more PO game before it falls out? All you've done is worsen your draft position. I'm not saying you don't root for your team to win - lord knows, every time the puck drops, I do. But when making deals, this current team should only be looking to the future. And if the core that's here now then goes on to surprise in the POs, that's a fantastic bonus that I will celebrate for days.

This team's prospect pool is ranked nearly dead last. It's just plain unwise to pony up assets when this team isn't a clear contender. We should be acquiring draft picks, not trading them. Homegrown talent has always been important, but it is much more so in a salary cap league; you need guys on ELC's who can be meaningful contributors.

The Rangers had their opportunity to put points in the bank for a rainy day but they went a combined 9-9-3 in two recent long home stands. Let's see how Lundqvist comes out of Sochi. The Rangers tanked in 2006 after the Olympics. They missed the playoffs in 2010.

I think Boyle at this stage is basically Gaustad without the TOFFNUSS. Right or wrong (wrong, definitely wrong), GMs will pay for toughness. How else could you explain Douglas Murray going for two seconds?
