Boyle is darn old too. A bit heavy on his feets too. Don't think he has too much left.

What's pissing me off more than anything is that we don't really try to find offensive Ds under Slats. Ozo was like the last attempt... Poti...

He does have double digits in goals.

But agree, he's a risk at his age. I don't see the alternative other than over-paying in a trade.

The safest bet would be just plug Diaz in for Stralman as Staal's partner, and go with Klein as Moore's partner.

Use our highest draft pick to select an offensive defenseman and hope he develops quickly.

G5- We have, and have had for almost 20 years, a big black hole on a vital position on the roster.

What is wrong with overpaying in a trade?

Why does no forward score for us?

Why are other teams prepared to overpay for PMDs?

It's not good at all to have as little offense from the blueline as we have had the last decade and a half...

As for the first point, I really think the MSG ice is why scorers have trouble putting up points with us. Even with the renovations, we have some of the worst ice in the league.

As for the second point, our best PMD ever in Leetch we got by sheer dumb luck. It was a great draft pick. Redden was a huge flop and everyone saw it coming. For years, our organizational philosophy has been to go safe (for the most part) in the early rounds and take risks later on. Staal, Miller, Skjei, and Del Zotto were all safe picks.

This draft will be very telling with how much input each member of the organization has in who we draft. If we go safe and American, Gordie Clark really has a lot of say. If we go with someone like Honka or Pastrnak in the 1st round, I would say AV and the coaching staff have a lot of weight. Time will tell.

As an aside, Stastny won't be worth what he'll get. I was singing a different tune when Thornton was still on the market, but now Stastny will be the most highly coveted guy. If Brassard is back, I'd rather get another 2/3 center that's good on faceoffs. A guy like David Legwand comes to mind on a 2 or 3 year deal. Use the extra couple million to help give raises to our young guys. Legwand would be a good mentor for JT Miller.

D.Boyle on a one year deal would be welcome as an upgrade on Stralman.

The Rangers 2nd pair D contributed a total of 24 points this season, combined between Staal and Stralman.

I'm pretty sick of watching Stralman shoot the puck into the goalie for every high quality scoring chance he gets. Solid otherwise.

The other guy I would look at, and one that will hurt a division rival is Marek Zidlickly on a 1 year deal. He's pretty good, and very underrated and is the only other UFA that fills the void of that offensive RHD.

Next year I'd run with:

McD-G
Staal-D.Boyle/Zidlicky
J.Moore/Allen-Klein
With Diaz as the 7th and McIlrath call up option.

or

If those two veterans can't be signed,

McD-G
Staal-Klein
J.Moore/Allen-Diaz/McIlrath depending on the match up

I'd also look into trading J.moore as a part of a package to get a top 6 center.

IMO Diaz is a better fit here than Klein. Klein has been very mediocre lately. Diaz stepped into the lineup and instantly made an impact.

Diaz would be a more than acceptable replacement for Stralman if the need arises.

Hopefully Klein gets it together going into the playoffs...if we can manage to get a point...pathetic how this team sqanders opportunities.

Klein is not a flashy defenseman and has been very solid in his own end while making the smart first pass out of the zone.

He helped stabilize this teams D when Stralman was going through a rough patch. He has also help J. Moore when paired with him. At his contract he is a bargin. He can play competent top four minutes if needed or be paired with a younger more offensive minded D on the third pair.

IMO the trade for him was the best deal this team has made all year.

Stats don't tell the story but his numbers are remarkedly better since coming here. 1 goal 6 assists +4 while taking 0 PIMS and 30 hits while averaging over 17 minutes a night (Mostly all even strength minutes at that).

I think mediocre is not a good word to describe Klein's play.

Klein is doing exactly what he should be. He's a stay at home defense man and the less you hear about him during the game the better.

It's definitely an issue i've been complaining about as well, for many years. We haven't had a real offensive threat from the blue line since Leetch.

The only reason i can think of not overpaying, would be creating another hole that would be another pain in the neck to fill.

Exact reason i was hoping we would trade up at the draft last June for Josh Morrissey. Or another highly skilled offensive defenseman.

Last year's and this year's trade deadline i was begging for one of Sproul, Clendenning. A team with contention aspirations that may have been willing to move a player like that, that hadn't yet cracked the NHL roster, in exchange for a piece they need for a playoff run.

Wanted Barrie for the same amount of time. Was begging to trade Del Zotto + for him.

They need a player like that. It is one of three holes we have to fill if we want to be legitimate contenders for the Cup.

1- offensive defenseman
2- #1 center
3- size, speed, and grit on the wings

Klein is ok overall. He's been mediocre the last couple of games. Its plain as day he can't hadle increased responsibility on a team looking to contend.

I don't need his stats to be anything.

I mentioned earlier he would be fine just sticking as the 3rd pair right defender with Moore. Controlled minutes for the both of them. Moore getting good Power Play time.

If Stralman goes, Diaz would be a fine replacement. His skill set is more suited for more ice time, playing with Staal, he could be effective.

But, id rather see us get a real offensive defenseman.

THANK YOU, so many people overlook this when criticizing the big name forward acquisitions. If you compare their stats to the teams they used to play for they're not even that far off.

Seriously why is it so hard for this team to get their hands on a legit PMD :shakehead. It seems like for some teams they just fall on their laps: Coyotes, Blue Jackets, Maple Leafs, etc.

Also, people seriously don't realize how mediocre Staal's hands are.

I realize this is a huge problem, but our opponents also play on the same ice. If anything, it should give us an advantage because NYR is more accustomed to it so I'm not sure if I can buy into this argument.

This. It's a total cop out and lame excuse.

to be fair, he was referring to individual production, but it still is a problem that can be turned into and advantage for the Rangers.

I don't think it's a topic worth discussing, really. Tons of players come to MSG and obliterate us. I remember Kovalchuk used to always love lighting us up at MSG. The ice didn't seem to give his shot any problems.

Yeah, no thanks. Kid has major attitude issues and is already signed to a big contract. Stay away, stay FARRRRR away.

Perceived issues. Maybe he should enjoy Winnipeg, you know the place where racists attacked him shortly after the team relocated. The place whose team sucks and management basically refuses to do anything that could be seen as a "big" move...

E. Staal > E. Kane. I like our crop of wingers. Still need that number 1 center.

I take it you skipped math class? The alligator eats the bigger option which is loosely translated to "better" on the internet.

E. Staal
l has an 8.25m a year cap hit, average point production? 73.

Over rated.

So that allows to him to act immature and unprofessionally?

This is now not one, but two Jets coaches who have had issues with him. There's a clear pattern here.

Unfortunately we don't have the assets to address all of our major holes. Management is going to have to decide what is most important.

I think acquiring an established #1 center or an up and coming will be too difficult and costly. Taking that into account, PMD or players who can finish, should be our top priority.

I'm 90% sure the leafs won't be resigning Cody Franson, he's a good right-handed bottom pairing D-man with PP specialty and I heard Sather was interested in his earlier on this season, I'm curious what would you guys give up for Franson??

I personally would give up maybe a 3rd rounder.

Sather might be willing to move more.
